Sacred Justice

Armenian News Network / Groong
January 28, 2016

By Mitch Kehetian

In my 52 years as a newspaper reporter and editor I've interviewed
some of the highest ranking political voices at the state and national
scene in America..

On the Armenian scene were such giants as Simon Vratzian, Gen. Dro,
and Reuben Darbinian.

But there's one special person who to this day still stands out as my
hero for justice: Soghomon Tehlirian.

He was the chosen one to silence the infamous Talaat Pasha who had
mapped out the extermination of Armenians in Turkish-occupied western
Armenia. I met Tehlirian while attending an ARF convention in
Boston. I still treasure our handshake to this time in my
life. Tehlirian died in 1960.

In 1961 as a reporter at the Columbus (Ohio) Citizen-Journal I was
assigned to compile a feature on how Israeli agents had tracked Adolf
Eichmann to his hide-out compound in Argentina to be tried for his
role in mapping the Nazi plan to exterminate Europe's Jewish
population. My editors agreed I should also include how Tehlirian in
1921 served as judge and jury in tracking down the Eichmann of the
Armenian genocide. The feature was also published by the Fresno Bee.

Tehlirian's mission remains on the charts to be read and viewed for
generations until political justice is recognized.

Three books and a movie about Tehlirian address the execution that
sent Talaat into the mode of a whirling dervish spinning into Satan's
domain. Actor Eric Boghosian, also author of a published book on
Operation Nemesis said it best about Mesrobian-MacCurdy's achievement:
"There are revelations in this book (Sacred Justice) that can not be
found anywhere else." While t he silver screen docudrama "Assignment
Berlin" was filmed in Detroit by producer Hrayr Toukhanian. Now we
have Mesrobian-Macurdy's new dimension on Tehlirian's mission that
needs to be expanded to cinema and television audiences.

Marian Mesrobian MacCurdy's enlightening masterpiece "Sacred Justice"
is a chilling account on how undercover Armenian agents tracked Talaat
to Berlin where he was hiding out with a new identity. But
professor-author MacCurdy's published research is more than an account
of the genocide and Tehlirian's life. It includes top secret letters,
some etched with coded words by ARF agents. The letters also reveal
how Tehlirian was selected to carry out the mission set by the
committee, that operated under the name tag Hadug Kordz - a special
mission.

Tehlirian met all the requirements. His entire family were victims of
the genocide. He had military training, knowledge on operating weapons
and explosives and was single. Moreso the letters reveal that the
committee trusted Tehlirian to surrender after killing Talaat so the
cause would gain global judicial awareness. Secrecy was the sacred
oath.

After gunning down Talaat, the Armenian fedayee waited for the police
as the fallen former Ottoman Turkish prime minister took his last gasp
of life in a street gutter near his Berlin hideout.

The letters reprinted in Mesrobian-MacCurdy's must read book are so
addictive they draw one's soul into the clandestine mission. The
Syracuse Armenian's 375-page book fuels the desire Hadug Kordz needs
to be resurrected to motivate uncaring bystanders and apologetic types
from the U.S. State Department to the White House to rightfully term
the 1915 carnage a "government conspired genocide."

Mesrobian-MacCurdy now teaches creative nonfiction at Hampshire
College in Amherst, Mass. Previously she served as professor and chair
of the department of writing at Ithaca College. But Marian's
history-revealing book only came to light when dozens of the secret
letters her late grandfather Aaron Sachaklian had hidden in his attic
study. They were found in 1990 by her mother - 25 years after
Sachaklian's death.

Sensing the historic value of the letters, Marian's mother tagged them
for safe keeping at her home. Sachaklian was the logistical leader of
the covert operation known as "Operation Nemesis" and keeper of all
correspondence.

The letters date back to the 1919 World Congress of the ARF when a
secret resolution (Hadug Kordz) was adopted. Little did Marian or
members of the family know about Operation Nemesis.

The secrecy of the letters derailed any attempt by German prosecutors
to uncover a list of conspirators during Tehlirian's trial, giving
strength to the defense that Tehlirian carried out the mission as a
"lone cell avenger." It worked. Tehlirian was found not guilty by the
German jury - on a justifiable homicide ruling.

Tehlirian also lived up to his sacred oath to remain silent at his
trial, and to only repeat that Talaat was the murderer of his entire
family. That he carried out the assassination with no outside help.
At the same time all correspondence relating to the mission was kept
with Marian's grandfather under the seal of secrecy to blunt any
prying into ARF archives.

When the film industry initially focused on the Jewish holocaust, it
did by dramatizing the scripts detailing the historic episodes of life
that sparked the Diary of Anne Frank and Schindler's List.

Professor-diplomat Gerard Libaridian firmly stresses Marian's book
will "not be the last word on Operation Nemesis and over time and
generations will be invaluable."

"Sacred Justice" matches the very tenets of what Operation Nemesis
achieved in silencing the architect of the Armenian genocide - and
shares the previously unknown, secretive letters. They're letters that
draw you into the execution of the monster who boasted to American
Ambassador Robert Morgenthau that he would eradicate the Armenian
people.

Abrise Professor Marian Mesrobian-MacCurdy. We thank you for sharing
your grandfather's hidden letters. They rightfully embrace the naming
of Operation Nemesis. Yes. It was "SACRED JUSTICE. . .

If you ask me, furkey mainly and the other powers all had their fair share of the blame for the Armenian Genocide one way or another.

Genocidaire Talaat's Last Interview

Shortly Before his Assassination
By Harut Sassounian
Publisher, The California Courier
www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com

Aubrey Herbert, British diplomat, adventurer, intelligence officer, and
Member of Parliament, conducted a rare interview with Talaat Pasha, in
February 1921, just days before his assassination in Berlin by Soghomon
Tehlirian.
As all-powerful Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire, its despotic ruler and
mastermind of the Armenian Genocide, Talaat had fled Turkey in November
1918 to avoid prosecution by the new regime. The 23-page interview with
Talaat was published in 1924 (London) and 1925 (New York) in Herbert's
memoirs titled, `Ben Kendim: A Record of Eastern Travel.'
Herbert first met Talaat in 1908 while stationed at the British Embassy in
Constantinople (Istanbul). Eleven years later, Herbert received an
unexpected letter from Talaat seeking a meeting with him `in any neutral
country.' Desperately seeking to rehabilitate his diabolical image
in the
West, Talaat claimed that `he was not responsible for the Armenian
massacres, that he could prove it, and that he was anxious to do so.'
Herbert turned down Talaat's request telling him: `I was very glad to hear
that it was not he who was responsible for the Armenian massacres, but that
I did not think any useful purpose could be served by our meeting at that
time.'
However, Herbert reversed his decision in February 1921, after Sir Basil
Thomson, Director of British Intelligence, ordered him to leave immediately
for Germany and meet Talaat. The secret rendezvous took place on February
26, in the small German town of Hamm.
Talaat told Herbert again that `he himself had always been against
the
attempted extermination of the Armenians.' More incredibly, Talaat
claimed
that `he had twice protested against this policy, but had been overruled,
he said, by the Germans.'
Forgetting his own claims of innocence in the massacres, Talaat justified
the mass killings by accusing Armenians of stabbing his country in the back
during the war. Contradicting himself again, Talaat declared his support
for Armenians by claiming that `he was in favor of granting autonomy to
minorities in the most extended form, and would gladly consider any
proposition that was made to him.'
Talaat then switched the blame to the British for the Armenian killings:
`You English cannot divest yourselves of responsibility in this matter. We
Young Turks practically offered Turkey to you, and you refused us. One
undoubted consequence has been the ruin of Christian minorities, whom your
Prime Minister has insisted on treating as your allies. If the Greeks and
Armenians are your allies when we are at war with you, you cannot expect
our Turkish Government to treat them as friends.'
Herbert and Talaat then decided to move to Dusseldorf, Germany, where they
continued their discreet conversation for two more days. Herbert reported
Talaat's paradoxical attempt to cover up his role in the Armenian Genocide,
while justifying this heinous crime. Talaat stated that `he had written a
memorandum on the Armenian massacres which he was very anxious that British
statesmen should read. Early in the war, in 1915, the Armenians had
organized an army, and had attacked the Turks, who were then fighting the
Russians. Three Armenian deputies had taken an active part; the alleged
massacres of Moslems had taken place, accompanied by atrocities on women
and children. He had twice opposed enforced migration, and he had been the
author of an inquiry which resulted in the execution of a number of guilty
Kurds and Turks.'
Ironically, Talaat boldly told Herbert that he was not afraid of being
assassinated. `He said that he never thought of it. Why should anyone
dislike him? I said that Armenians might very well desire vengeance, after
all that had been written about him in the papers. He brushed this aside.'
Two weeks later, Talaat was assassinated in Berlin by Soghomon Tehlirian!
Concluding his interview of Talaat, Herbert observed: `He died hated,
indeed execrated, as few men have been in their generation. He may have
been all that he was painted -- I cannot say. I know that he had rare power
and attraction. I do not know whether he was responsible or not for the
Armenian massacres.'
Only experts of that time period can verify the authenticity and accuracy
of this lengthy interview. If true, what exactly were Talaat's aims in
proposing `an Anglo-Turkish alliance' and why was the British government so
anxious to talk to him?

PanARMENIAN.Net - 1.

My conversation with the son of Soghomon Tehlirian, the man who
assassinated the organiser of the Armenian genocide

‘He was not what an assassin should be. He first told me the story of
how he killed Mehmet Talaat Pasha when I was 10’

Robert Fisk
@indyvoices
20/6/16

A memorial in Istanbul to mark the 100th anniversary of the mass
killings of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire EPA

Soghomon Tehlirian Junior doesn’t have much time for those who want
the Armenian genocide recognized by the world. “The Armenians keep
trying to tip things out of the grave,” he says. “It’s three
generations ago. It’s history. Everyone killed a lot of people. You
can’t go back to the Spanish inquisition and the Roman Empire and
bring it back. That’s not me. I never remember my father saying one
bad word about the Turks. He just wanted to live his life in peace.”

I listen to the brisk, youthful voice of this 86-year-old Armenian
talking to me down the phone from America and I have to shake my head
to remember that his father, Soghomon Tehlirian, was the assassin who
shot dead Mehmet Talaat Pasha, the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire
and organizer of the 1915 genocide of one and a half million Christian
Armenians.

He killed Taalat in a Berlin park in 1921 as part of the Armenians’
‘Operation Nemesis’ to destroy all who had plotted the extermination
of their people. So appalled was the German Weimar Republic’s court
by the evidence of the 20th century’s first industrial holocaust, that
it took jurors at Tehlirian’s trial just two days to declare the
Armenian assassin ‘not guilty’.

So Soghomon Tehlirian got off scot-free, went to make his fortune in
Yugoslavia where his sons was born, and ended up in California. His
younger son was 12 when the Germans invaded the Balkans in 1941.

“I saw the gun my father used to shoot Talaat Pasha, but when the
Germans came, he threw it into the Danube,” he says. “When the Germans
occupied Yugoslavia, owning a Luger pistol would have been a death
sentence.”

The family story is both gruesome and tragic and Soghomon Tehlirian’s
younger son has changed his family name to distance himself from
history – and from the Turks who still regard his father as the
world’s most famous “terrorist”.

He asked The Independent not to reveal his new identity. “No names, no
address… I’m out of it. You never know, if some crazy Turk finds out…”

Tehlirian Junior’s older brother is now dead. His father died in
America in 1960. It was a request that couldn’t be refused. But the
surviving son’s memory of Soghomon Tehlirian is razor sharp.

Armenians mark 101 years since genocide

10show all

“He was the most gentle, mild man you could ever meet, almost naïve.
Me and my older brother had to force him to tell us what happened. He
never liked to talk about it. He was a man of very few words. He used
to write poetry and draw very well.

“He was not what an assassin should be. He first told me the story of
how he killed Talaat when I was 10.”

For more than a century, the Armenians have blamed Talaat Pasha, the
ruthless Ottoman interior minister, for organising and completing the
genocide of the Christian Armenians of what is now Turkey. The male
victims were shot into mass graves, beheaded beside rivers, or
drowned. Their women were sent into the deserts of northern Syria on
death marches which often ended in rape and starvation. Children were
burned alive.

Talaat Pasha, like the Nazi war criminals who followed his example
less than three decades later, sought sanctuary abroad after his
country lost the First World War. He chose Berlin. And that is where
Soghomon Tehlirian Senior was sent in 1921 to kill the tall, bearded
man who lived quietly in the Charlottenberg district of the German
capital.

“My father shared a room with a group of students,” his son remembers.
“He said it was right across the street from Talaat. In photographs,
Talaat had a moustache, but he had grown it into a full beard and he
had two bodyguards.”

Talaat made the classic mistake of adopting a routine. “He went for a
constitutional every day at 11.0 am. My father got behind him and
called out his name, ‘Talaat’, and he turned round and my father shot
him... I don’t know what happened to the bodyguards. The people who
saw all this grabbed my father and beat him and it was only the Berlin
police who saved him from being lynched. Later, I found out that he
had also killed an Armenian Quisling in Istanbul who was spying for
the Turks during the genocide.”

Indeed, in 1921 Tehlerian assassinated Hartyun Mkrtchian, who had
helped Talaat round up the initial Armenian clergymen, journalists and
lawyers for exile and death in April 1915. Vidkun Quisling was the
Norwegian head of the Nazi occupation government in Oslo in 1940 –
like the word ‘genocide’, his name did not exist as a noun until after
the Second World War – and Quisling was also executed, albeit after a
post-war trial.

By the time he killed Talaat, therefore, Tehlirian, who was born in
Erzerum province in Turkey in 1896, already had the blood of an
Armenian informer on his hands. The 1921 Berlin court, trying him for
Talaat’s murder but appalled by the evidence of the slaughter of
hundreds of thousands of Armenians – which the present German
parliament acknowledged as genocide only this month – set Soghomon
Tehlerian free after two days.

Popular Armenian history would have it that Tehlerian’s entire family
– his father, mother, sisters and all three brothers – were murdered
in front of him during the genocide. This is untrue. Soghomon
Tehlirian was not in Armenia at the time.

He was in Serbia, having moved there quite by chance on the very day
in June 1914 that Gavrillo Principe shot the Archduke Ferdinand in
Sarajevo, setting off the First World War.

“My father never had a sister,” his son says. “He and two of his
brothers were in Serbia. It was his mother – my grandmother – who was
killed in the genocide, along with his oldest brother Vasken, who
would have been my uncle and who had been a medical student in Beirut.

“My father went to Russia during the [Bolshevik] Revolution and joined
General Antranik Ozanian’s Armenian army, which had been fighting
alongside the Russian Tsar’s army against the Turks. I have a
photograph of my father in a fur hat with [bandoliers of] bullets
draped round him. The Russian front was then in [the Armenian city of]
Van. I don’t know if he knew then what had happened to his mother and
brother but he did find his 12-year old niece, lost in the woods in
western Armenia. Her name was Armenouhi and she was the daughter of my
uncle – my father’s older brother Missak – and Missak’s first wife.”

In 1917, Soghomon Tehrlirian met a 15-year old Armenian girl called
Anahit. “She was the great love of his life,” his son says today.

“After his trial in Berlin, my father went to Cleveland in the US but
Anahit, who would become my mother, was inside what was now the Soviet
Union and she couldn’t get out. She went to the local passport office
in Tbilisi and said she wanted to go to America to marry my father,
but they said ‘no’. Then she and her older sister met a businessman
in Tbilisi in 1923, who listened to her story and then gave her his
business card and told the two girls to show it to the Soviet passport
office.

If a US court acknowledges the Armenian genocide, government must too

“The moment they did so, they gave Anahit an exit visa and her sister
a full Soviet passport. They never knew who the businessman was.
Anahit’s mother – my grandmother – told her she was too young to go on
her own and that her sister, who would be my aunt, must travel with
her.”

The two girls left for Marseilles – but the US refused Anahit’s sister
an entry visa because she was a citizen of the new Soviet Union. She
had to return.

“My father gave up his business in Cleveland and travelled to
Marseilles,” his son says. Soghomon Tehlirian married Anahit and
decided to go to Yugoslavia because he had family and friends there.
But the politics of revolution followed him like an albatross.

In Yugoslavia, he opened a successful coffee business and his business
card, according to his son, announced that he was ‘official coffee
grinder to the Royal Court’ of King Alexander. He had a monopoly on
coffee in Yugoslavia “and drove around in a Ford station wagon,
delivering coffee to the King’s palace”.

But after the Second World War and Tito’s accession to power, Soghomon
Tehlirian befriended a street urchin and asked him to work in his
coffee emporium. “He became a Communist,” Tehlirian’s son says, “and
one day he walked into the store and told my father: ‘Now, you get
out of here – this belongs to the people.’ My father came home in
tears. They just kicked him out.”

Soghomon Tehlirian spent the rest of his life in the US before dying
of a brain tumour in 1960. His wife Anahit died in 1979.

“In his last years, the Armenians showed my father off in cities
around America – in Boston, Cleveland, New York,” his son says today.
“He would give patriotic speeches but he really never liked to talk of
what happened.” His grave can be found in the Ararat cemetery in
Fresno, California, topped by a gold-plated Armenian eagle holding in
its claw a serpent representing Tehlirian’s celebrated victim, Talaat
Pasha.

Talaat’s own ashes lie today within a much visited mausoleum in
central Istanbul. They were returned to the Turks in 1943 in a train
decorated with the Nazi swastika, and on the orders of Adolf Hitler –
who hoped this would persuade neutral Turkey to join the Axis powers.
In vain.

'Anti-Armenian sentiment was central part of his life' – Swiss
historian studies Talaat Pasha's biography

YEREVAN, MAY 26, ARMENPRESS. Swiss historian Hans-Lukas Kieserhas
finally arrived in Armenia after 35 years of studying and touching
upon Armenia and the Armenian Genocide. He is happy and excited,
because during all those years he thought about coming to Armenia.

“I like Armenia very much, also the hospitality of the people. I can
say that life is blossoming here. Here, I see culture, I see statues
of not only heroes and politicians in the capital, but also writers
and musicians –this is a sign of life, potential”, he told reporters.

The historian, who was bestowed the Armenian Presidential Award for
his prominent work on the Armenian Genocide history, said that Turkey
is experiencing a déjà vu in the sense that history doesn’t repeat,
rather political models do.

“Meaning specific elements are repeating now, which however aren’t
promising and don’t lead to the future. This is the feeling which I
get when I look at Turkey. The hopes which we had during the
democratization years – 2002-2010 – are shattered, and models are
being repeated. History is never repeated, only models, policy and
ideas”, he said.

Although Hans-Lukas Kieserdoesn’t see any prospect for Turkey
recognizing the Armenian Genocide anytime soon, nevertheless he finds
it positive that the local politicians raise the issue.

“This is the first time when Parliamentarians openly speak about the
Genocide, the representative of the Democratic People’s Party even
spoke about a proposal of recognition. I believe this is a potential
which is being grossly pressured, but it is impossible to kill
potential – even if it seems hopeless, it can easily be transformed”,
he said.

The Swiss historian said he has completed studying Talaat Pasha’s
biography, which will be published in Spring of 2018.

“I’ve put forward two points in this study. First of all, I showed
that Talaat was a dominant political figure, he was definitely the
first, not Jemal Pasha, neither Enver. He was the man on whose
shoulders Ataturk built the Turkish Republic. The other important
point which I showed is that Armenia and the Armenian Genocide, his
Armenophobic policy had a central place in his life”, he said.

A statue honoring Soghomon Tehlirian, the fighter of the Armenian national liberation movement and national avenger, is set to be inaugurated in the district of Beaumont, Marseille, France, on March 15.

On March 15, 1921, in Berlin, Armenian revolutionary Soghomon Tehlirian assassinated Talaat *****, one of the orchestrators of the Armenian Genocide. Tehlirian’s actions were part of a covert operation known as Operation Nemesis, carried out by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, which sought to hold those responsible for the Armenian Genocide accountable.

Tehlirian was arrested; however, he was eventually acquitted by the German court.

One of the biggest events in the smallest city of Shirak Region was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The copper statue of Soghomon Tehlirian, the fighter of the Armenian national liberation movement and avenger, stands now proudly at the square in Maralik.

It is already the fourth monument in the memory of Soghomon Tehlirian: his bust is situated in Yerevan, his monument-grave in San Francisco, and one more monument in Talin. Sculptor Samvel Petrosyan tried to give the statue a character: the Armenian, who revenged the blood and torture of millions of Armenians, with a gun in his hand and with his foot on the rocks.
