Accel, since I spent some time shopping for a camera here is my 2 cents: Canon PowerShot A70 is very popular, a little bigger and heavier than the s400 discussed. I have heard many many good things about it. There is also a really small and lightweight Canon PowerShot SD100 Digital Elph, I really liked the size. They are about $120 cheaper than the s400 but both are 3.2 megapixel. The A70 has better characteristics.

I was mostly experimenting with the manual focus and the shutter delays ... the night mode shooting on this is VERY good if you learn to use it correctly. Basically it can open the shutter for a while to get the dark background then fire the flash to get the foreground. On top of that, you can lock the focus on a certain object and then move the camera, mess with the exposure timing and other things. You can get some CRAZY pictures with it.
Of course the pics above have been cropped and shrunk for the web.

Wow Seap, a hidden talent of a photographer! Way to go buddy, your exceptional ability in capturing breathtaking scenery never seizes to amaze me!
And to swerve back to the topic I recently purchased and received my toy. And I am one happy shopper. Besides the fact that I went on a shopping spree (yes I am a technology shopaholic). But this thread is about cameras so I shall stick to it.
First I had established a limited budget --> camera: Canon 3>$300. First I went for Canon PowerShot S230 3.2 MP Digital ELPH Camera with 2x Optical Zoom which seemed to be a sweet deal. Small and compact with great resolution and I found it for a price of $249, apparently it turned out to be one of those Brooklyn companies who compensated for their low price by swindling you into buying unnecessary accessories to make an appropriate profit, which came out to be $90 more since the rep convinced me that I MUST buy a high life battery (yeah aha) and they charged me $22 for shipping and some obscene amount for taxes, so z--- that, the order was cancelled before the rep was able to ask me if I have a boyfriend for a second time (apparently it was a dating center as well). Yuck! Not wanting to deal with a person again, being that I am working on my undergrad Geek degree, I decided to stick with pure cyber space. I did some more research and came up with this new deal, and upgraded version of s230---> CANON POWERSHOT SD100 3.2 MP Digital ELPH Camera with 2x Optical Zoom DIGITAL ELPH CAMERA Specs? Here they are
*3.2 megapixel resolution produces prints up to 11 x 14 inches
*World's smallest retractable 2x optical zoom lens with 3.2x digital zoom
*Smallest digital Elph yet; captures video clips with sound up to 3 minutes
*Included 16 MB Secure Digital (SD) card
*Powered by rechargeable lithium-ion battery; connects with Macs and PCs via USB port
I got it for a total of $261 everything included, sweet! The pics are awesome and it's beauty!

Wow Ani jan - that is saying something! But shoes can be cool too (I mean those sexy ones on a lady that is)..and yeah were all ears! And its nice to see gals who can appreciate techno stuff - I mena most of it is pretty cool IMO...LOl - but I am a guy eh? Another thing..and I hope you don't mind my occasional flirt and such and comment of a sexual nature - but I really think that we have a mission to disprove the assertion that feminism somehow diminishes sexiness and play between the sexes - nothing could be further from the truth IMO - as it liberates the female to speak her mind and be more open (and what could be sexier then that IMO)..and also guys who is comfortable with women - I mean that - as women - not just as wives or servants or what have you - well - thats liberating too and to me allows for more freeplay interaction and basically opens everythign up - to more fun, for more serious - open and equal talk - all of it....so kudos to ya sexy elfkin!

That's what I recommended to Accel By the way, is Secure Digital any better than Compact Flash?

Great minds think alike! I think it's the same crap.
Compact Flash is more expensive I think and memory transfer rate is slower but sopports high storage.
Secure Digital is less expensive supports less storage but I think lower quality. I might be wrong though.

I was trying to tell him that the rating on their "exteded" batteries for $30 were half that of the $10 one I could buy off of ebay. Well, half hour later I found out through email that the thing I wanted to buy was out of stock
About secure digital vs compact flash ... to the average user it's just a different standard. CompactFlash is more widely accepted and used but SD is gaining popularity and is much more streamlined and sexy from what I have seen. I like compactflash since all the circuitry is built into the CF package. You can just plug it into any PCMCIA port (laptop) using a very cheap adapter and read it straight off ... i.e. you don't need special readers and what not.
I don't know exact technical differences but at least traditionally (i.e. as of few months ago), compact flash has been cheaper than SD. If I were to buy something, I'd probably lean more towards compactflash since I am so used to them and already have a few cards. But in buying a new camera, it's probably not that big an issue although you may want to consider memory costs if you plan to get additional chips.
I've said it before in this thread but the Sandisk ULTRA II CF cards are simply amazing right now. I am very impressed with the speed and the price is very reasonable.
