It's a superstition thing .. supposed to be good luck or keep away bad luck or something like that.

Hmm...and there's no culture ties to it, are there? Most of my turk friends wear it so I'm just guessing.

That is generally known as talisman. There are other forms of talismans. This is specifically an antidote to evil eye.
Serach the net using "evil eye" as your keyword and learn more that you ever need. It is basically a stupid superstition.

I know. I know! Pleonasm/Redundancy/Stupidity.
I used “stupid” and “superstition” in the same sentence.
A redundancy” a “pleonasm” without indicating that those who believe in “superstition” may also be labeled as “stup.d” .
Pleonasm? Redundancy?
Well!!!

Talking of superstition, when I was moving out of the house, my mom wanted to give me a box with a cross, some salt, and I think one of these evil eyes. Of course I wouldn't take it so she had snuck it into my bags without me knowing.

Of course the next time I got back I snuck it back into one of her drawers so hopefully one day she'll realize what an amazing son I have been ... not wanting to take all her good luck and cross/salt protection with me when I left hope. lol.gif

Ironically enough, my mom is not really religious.

PS: I'm glad I wasn't flying because 1st, I'd have lied and said I was the only one packing my bags and 2nd, I'd have to explain the white powder in the box next to the voodoo statue of the tortured dead man. ohmy.gif
