Colorado Governor proclaims April as Genocide Awareness Month

YEREVAN, April 5. / ARKA /. Colorado Governor Jared Polis has proclaimed April as Genocide Awareness Month, referencing the genocide of Armenians, Jews, and others, Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) reports.

In the proclamation, the governor stressed the importance of genocide awareness, calling out perpetrators who are denying their crimes against humanity.

The proclamation came after Alabama Governor Kay Ivey signed on March 20, 2019 a declaration recognizing the fact of the Armenian Genocide 2015. Now the fact of the genocide is recognized by 49 of the United States’ 50 states.

The Armenian Genocide is the first genocide of the 20th century.  According to Armenian and many other historians, up to 1.5 million Armenians have been killed starting in 1915 in a systematic campaign by the government of Turkey.  Turkey has been denying it for decades.

The Armenian genocide has been recognized by dozens of countries.  The first was Uruguay that did so in 1965. Other nations are Russia, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon, Canada, Venezuela, Argentina, 43 U.S. states.
It has been recognized also by the Vatican, the European Parliament, the World Council of Churches and other international organizations. --0---

FM Mnatsakanyan: We consider ourselves victors

“We consider ourselves victors because we were supposed to be wiped out of the face of this Earth. But today we are confident people, proud and strong about their identity, their history and their civilization with thriving communities all over the world, a nation state, a country,” Foreign Minister of Armenia Zohrab Mnatsakanyan has stated in an interview to the Rwandese media representatives

Responding to a question about the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915, the minister reminded that the legal term genocide was developed by Raphael Lemkin, the international community adopted the convention on genocide in 1948 and the Armenian genocide very much the source of examination of why and how these things can happen.

In the minister’s words, the denial to recognize genocide, denialism is very painful and haunts generations. “ We fail to recognize the damage of the generations when justice is denied. There are over five generations now who are the survivors or the descendants of the survivors. We have seen the depth of the calamity that genocide brings. It happened to the Armenians, followed by Holocaust, the Rwandan Genocide,” said the minister, adding “Everytime we stand in the international community and say "never again", but it is not enough. We ask ourselves the question: are we serious, is it enough, have we been paying attention to the signs of genocidal tendencies which can be detected early. Have we been acting early to prevent, or we just let it go to face the calamity.”

Centrist Democrat International, the global organization of centre and centre-right parties, adopted a resolution recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide during the meeting of the executive committee.

The resolution was authored by Armen Ashotyan, deputy chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia.

The organization unites around 100 parties from 50 countries from Asia, Europe and Latin America.

“Adoption of this resolution gives the Foreign Ministry an opportunity to work with the countries which have not recognized the Armenian Genocide, but where the ruling and opposition parties are members of this political family,” Ashotyan said during a live video on Facebook.

100 YEARS AGO: Massacres in Armenia and Germans captured in Wentwood

By Argus reporter

Reports from the South Wales Argus 100 years ago:

Armenian massacres
 Turkish officers arrested
 Will they be punished?

CONSTANTINOPLE, April 4, (delayed) - As already foreshadowed, the advent to power of the Liberal Entente Party has produced more energetic action with regard to the arrest of members of the Committee of Union and Progress implicated in the Armenian massacres, deportations, and abuse of power generally.

But, unfortunately, the trial of those who were arrested some months ago is proceeding in the usual Turkish dilatory fashion. For instance, sentence on the authors of the Yosghad massacre was to have been delivered yesterday, but at the last moment the announcement was made in court that one of the principal accused, named Kernal, had been suddenly taken ill. It was actually stated that he had become demented, and sentence had to be postponed.

Halil Pasha, Alif Bey and Jemal Oghuz, who have just been arrested, were secured at the village of Henkeny, near Haldar Pasha, on the Adriatic shore of the Sea of Marmara, where a search of the house in which they were hiding led to the discovery of a quantity of arms and ammunition. Haili Pasha was known at the Turkish War Office by the nickname of “Uncle Pasha”, and he utilised to the utmost his relationship to Enver for obtaining promotions and honours for his friends. Halil was at one time Commander-in-Chief in Mesopotamia, and he afterwards played an important part in the deportation of Armenians from Angora.

Jemal Oghuz is known for his arbitrary rule as a Provincial Governor. While the new arrests are producing an impression on the public, the delays in the legal proceedings are having a contrary effect, and most people are beginning to despair of the criminals ever being punished.

Public security in the capital and suburbs has greatly improved since the introduction of Allied control of the Turkish police, but the situation in the provinces, and even in districts not far distant from Constantinople, leave smuch to be desired.

At the village of Budja, near Smyrna, where a number of English reside, and where a serious disturbance recently occurred between Turks and Greeks, the presence of three “Tommies” who were sent there subsequently has resulted in the maintenance of order and tranquility.

Since the new Cabinet has been in office, nearly a month, there has already been one resignation, namely, that of the Minister of War, in consequence of the divergence of views between him and the Minister of Finance respecting the transfer of certain funds from the War Department.

The Greek General, Paraskevopoulos, Commander-in-Chief at Salonika, has been here for the past five days. He received an enthusiastic welcome from the Greek community, and several banquets have been given in his honour.

Germans recaptured

Discovered in Wentwood

THE THREE Prussian prisoners of war who escaped from Pencoed Castle, Llanmartin, on Sunday night, have been recaptures. Diligent search was made for them on Monday and Tuesday, and on Tuesday night they surrendered to PC Perry, of Christchurch, in Wentwood, they were taken to Newport County Police Station and will probably be handed over to the military authorities.

Turkey frustrated by steps taken by France and Italy regarding Armenian Genocide

The adoption of a new resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide by the Italian Parliament and declaring April 24 as a mourning day by the French President has strongly annoyed Ankara.

According to Turkish Milliyet, Turkish Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun condemned the decision of Macron.

On April 10, President Macron signed a decree declaring April 24 as the national day of memory of the Armenian Genocide.

Italy’s lower house of parliament – the Chamber of Deputies – on Wednesday approved a motion calling on the government to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide and elevate the profile of the issue on an international level.

Turkish minister, French lawmaker clash over Armenia ‘genocide’ day

by Shoaib Ur Rehman

ANKARA: Turkish  Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu clashed on Friday with a French lawmaker over the commemoration of the “Armenian genocide” in a heated exchange that prompted the French delegation to walk out.

Turkey and Armenia are at odds over how to describe treatment of Armenians during the Ottoman era in WWI, with Turkey denying massacres and forced deportations amounted to a genocide.

French President Emmanuel Macron in February announced France would hold a national day on April 24 to commemorate the “Armenian genocide”, drawing criticism from Ankara.

During a meeting of the NATO parliamentary assembly in Antalya in southern Turkey on Friday, Turkish parliament chief Mustafa Sentop lashed out at France’s decree to establish the commemorative day, accusing Paris of “manipulating history.”

He also referenced massacres committed in Algeria when it was still a French colony and in Rwanda whose government accuses Paris of being complicit in the 1994 slaughter there.

Attending the meeting, French lawmaker Sonia Krimi, from Macron’s LREM party, criticised Turkish comments saying she was shocked. But that provoked a sharp response from Cavusoglu.

“In terms of genocide and history, France is the last country to be giving lectures to Turkey, and we have not forgotten what happened in Rwanda and Algeria,” the minister said.

“You can keep trying to look down on us, but we will keep putting you in your place.”

Krimi and the French delegation left the room in protest over Cavusoglu’s remarks.

“When the arrogant @MevlutCavusolgu gives you lessons on arrogance and politeness, arrogantly and without any respect,” she wrote on Twitter referring to the incident.

Turkey’s presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin hit back posting on Twitter a story from state news agency Anadolu about “dark stains in French history.”

“Neither their colonial past nor their self-centred present guarantees their moral superiority,” he wrote.

Armenians commemorate the massacres on April 24 — the day in 1915 when thousands of Armenian intellectuals suspected of harbouring nationalist sentiment and being hostile to Ottoman rule were rounded up.

Paylan calls for putting Armenian Genocide issue on Turkish parliament’s agenda

Turkish-Armenian MP Garo Paylan, representing the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) took to Twitter on Thursday to comment on Wednesday’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide by the Italian parliament and the signing of a decree designating April 24 as a day of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide by French President Emmanuel Macron.

The lawmaker called for putting the Armenian Genocide issue on the Turkish parliament’s agenda.

“The Armenian Genocide issue should be pulled from the agenda of the Italian, French and U.S. parliaments and made a topic of discussion at the parliament of Turkey, the country where this big tragedy took place. Armenians in Turkey have been waiting for justice for 104 years already,” he said.

The Italian parliament’s Chamber of Deputies recognized and condemned the 1915 Armenian Genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire, while President Macron signed a decree on 10 April to declare April 24 as a national day of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide.

In addition, U.S. Congressmen Adam Schiff and Gus Bilirakis on Monday were joined by more than 70 of their U.S. House colleagues in introducing a new Armenian Genocide Resolution aimed at establishing, as a matter of U.S. policy, 1) the rejection of Armenian Genocide denial, 2) ongoing official U.S. government recognition and remembrance of this crime, and 3) the importance of education about the Armenian Genocide in preventing modern-day atrocities.

Britain apologized for Irish Famine but Armenians still wait for genocide apology from Turkey

Niall O'Dowd

 cropped_armenian_genocide4.jpg?t=1555094

Turkey still denies the persecution suffered by the Armenians after WWI

While Britain has offered apologies for the famine that Ireland suffered at its hands in the mid 19th century, Armenians today still wait for a similar apology from Turkey.

Up to 1.6 million Armenians died in the genocide ordered by Turkish leaders starting in 1915, just over a half-century after the Irish famine. Yet as another anniversary looms, the current Turkish government still denies genocide.

In commemorating the Irish Famine, the Irish are partially consoled by the British government’s apology offered by former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair in 1997:

"The famine was a defining event in the history of Ireland and Britain. It has left deep scars. That one million people should have died in what was then part of the richest and most powerful nation in the world is something that still causes pain as we reflect on it today. Those who governed in London at the time failed their people."

The people of Armenia have had no such luck as the horrific deeds of the Young Turks, who ruthlessly ran the Ottoman Empire, have never been acknowledged by Turkey.

Far from it - Turkey has spent countless millions spreading fake news that such a Holocaust even occurred. When the pro-Armenian film ‘The Promise,’ directed by Irish filmmaker Terry George, was released, it was subjected to a massive worldwide campaign to discredit it.

 armenian_genocide3.jpg

Uzay Bulut, a Turkish journalist based in Washington, D.C., says: “The genocide was carried out during and after World War I and implemented in two phases—the wholesale killing of the able-bodied male population through massacre and subjection of army conscripts to forced labor, followed by the deportation of women, children, the elderly, and the infirm on death marches leading to the Syrian Desert.”

“Driven forward by military escorts, the deportees were deprived of food and water and subjected to periodic robbery, rape, and massacre.”

The Holocaust Encyclopedia states: “Sometimes called the first genocide of the twentieth century, the Armenian genocide refers to the physical annihilation of Armenian Christian people living in the Ottoman Empire from spring 1915 through autumn 1916.”

“There were approximately 1.5 million Armenians living in the multiethnic Ottoman Empire in 1915. At least 664,000 and possibly as many as 1.2 million died during the genocide, either in massacres and individual killings, or from systematic ill-treatment, exposure, and starvation."

“Ottoman authorities, supported by auxiliary troops and at times by civilians, perpetrated most of the persecution and mass killing. The Ottoman government, controlled by the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP; also called the Young Turks), aimed to solidify Muslim Turkish dominance in the regions of central and eastern Anatolia by eliminating the sizeable Armenian presence there.”

armenian_5.jpg

“Mass atrocities and genocide are often perpetrated within the context of war. The destruction of the Armenians was closely linked to the events of World War I. Fearing that invading enemy troops would induce Armenians to join them, in spring 1915 the Ottoman government began the deportation of the Armenian population from its northeastern border regions. In the months that followed, the Ottomans expanded deportations from almost all provinces regardless of distance from combat zones.”

“The victims of the Armenian genocide include people killed in local massacres that began in spring 1915; others who died during deportations, under conditions of starvation, dehydration, exposure, and disease; and Armenians who died in or en route to the desert regions of the southern Empire [today: northern and eastern Syria, northern Saudi Arabia, and Iraq]. In addition, tens of thousands of Armenian children were forcibly removed from their families and converted to Islam.”

Argentine Football Club San Lorenzo Remembered the Armenian Genocide during a Match

Before the football match between San Lorenzo and Huracan for the Argentine Superliga Cup, the San Lorenzo recalled the 104th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide with a banner on the afternoon of April 14.

"Let us all remember the Armenian Genocide" reads the poster that was exhibited at the Pedro Bidegain Stadium. The initiative came from the Armenian Institutions of the Argentine Republic (IARA) and the approval of the club's President, Matias Lammens.

"It was really exciting to enter the field, the supporters were very respectful and they applauded us standing up," said Horacio Terzian, representative of IARA.

Similar posters had been shown in different clubs in previous years: Boca Juniors did it repeatedly in the Bombonera, and in 2016 they showed it during a superclasico against River Plate, in the most important match of the country.

It is not the first gesture that the President of San Lorenzo Matias Lammens has with the Armenian community. In 2014, Press Armenia news agency announced that Lammens had rejected the sponsorship of Azerbaijan. On that occasion, the representatives of the State of Azerbaijan demanded that there should not be any Armenians in the club's board of directors, according to Lammens. That decision earned him the recognition from the Armenian community, which granted him a distinction months later.

Asya Balayan History of Armenian Genocide will be included in program of Syrian  schools 20190415093355.jpg

ArmInfo. At the initiative of the Armenian MP of the Syrian parliament, historian, doctor of sciences Nora Arisyan, the theme of the Armenian Genocide is included in the  syllabus of Syrian schools.

After contacting the National Center for Curriculum Development of  the Ministry of Education of Syria and the discussions that took  place, the decision to include the topic of the Armenian Genocide in  textbooks on the history of graduate classes for the 2019-2020  academic years was made. The section "Political Shifts" refers to the  arbitrary policy of the "Unity and Progress" Turkish Party ("Ittihat  ve Terakki") on the assimilation of national minorities in the early  20th century, as well as on the Genocide and deportation of Armenians  in 1915. It is also said that many of the survivors took refuge in  Syria.

The book mentions the testimony of the Syrian historian Muhammad Kurd  Ali.

The "Civilization Unity" section talks about the problems of  preserving the cultural values of Armenians in Syria, as well as  about the contribution of Syrian Armenians to various spheres of the  state.

Montreal declares April 24 as Armenian Genocide commemoration day

The Montreal City Council issued a statement regarding the 104th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide at its special session on 15 April, stating the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1916 under the Ottoman Empire was the first genocide of the 20th century, which killed two-thirds of the Armenian people.

Since 1997, the Montreal City Council annually adopts a resolution condemning the deportations and massacre of 1,5 million Armenians, Horizon Weekly reports.

The statement of the municipality says that Montreal is home to some 50,000 Armenians, who, as a community, greatly contribute to the city’s cultural, economic and political life.

The Montreal mayor has signed an order to declare April 24, 2019 as a day of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide in the city, the newspaper said.

French lawmaker receives death threats over Armenian Genocide
267803.jpg
April 18, 2019 - 16:53 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - French lawmaker Philippe Folliot had a very hectic trip to Turkey where he led the French delegation participating in a seminar of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. The French delegation had to leave the meeting, and Folliot and his colleague Sonia Krimi were threatened on social networks afterwards, La Dépêche reports.

The situation slipped when the president of the Turkish Parliament and the Turkish Foreign Minister attacked France for Rwanda, and describe the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by France as "populist."

"I was presiding over the meeting, so I could not answer, but my colleague Sonia Krimi intervened," said Folliot.

However, the French delegation decided to leave the meeting amid verbal attacks by the Turkish representatives, an unprecedented episode in the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, says Folliot.

"The Turkish authorities have sought to minimize the scope of the incident since," says Philippe Folliot. Turkish officials then attacked la Manche MP Sonia Krimi over her origin.

The incident did not end there. The lawmakers were recognized at the airport when departing from Turkey, with some people insulting them, others making selfies, explained Folliot.

The lawmaker said his tweets are usually seen by 1500 to 5000 people. Following the incident, however, the reach on Twitter hit some 115,000 or more.

He even began to receive messages containing death threats, he said.

Congress Turkey Caucus co-chair honors Armenian Genocide victims

PanARMENIAN.Net - In a historic first, the Co-Chairman of the Turkey Caucus, Congressman Gerry Connolly of Virginia, participated in a solemn Congressional visit to the Tsitsernakaberd Armenian Genocide Memorial in Yerevan, Armenia, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) reports.

The lawmakers laid flowers at the eternal fire to pay tribute to the memory of 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide.

They also toured the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute to learn more about the exhibits and left a note in the book of memories.

Armenians commemorate the mass killings on April 24 because on that date in 1915 a group of Armenian intellectuals was rounded up and assassinated in Constantinople by the Ottoman government. On April 24, Armenians worldwide will be commemorating the 104th anniversary of the Genocide which continued until 1923. Some three dozen countries, hundreds of local government bodies and international organizations have so far recognized the killings of 1.5 million Armenians as Genocide. Turkey denies to this day.

Armenian Genocide victims honored at Massachusetts State House
18:55, 18.04.2019

default.jpg

Martyrs and survivors of the Armenian Genocide were honored under the golden dome of the Massachusetts State House last week during the 104th annual commemoration of the 1915 events, Armenian Weekly reported.

“We are here to remember,” said State Senator William Brownsberger. For the past 34 years, in the days leading up to April 24, state and local elected officials invite Armenians and human rights advocates to the Massachusetts State House for this annual ceremony, designed to highlight the Armenian heritage and stress the importance of the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide. The event was held only a few days after the Commonwealth’s commemoration of the Rwandan Genocide.

As State Representative David Muradian explained, many of his colleagues in that chamber have an “R” or a “D” after their names. “Truthfully,” he said, “they should have an ‘A’ for Armenian,” alluding that crimes against humanity, including the Armenian Genocide and the genocides that followed, should not be considered partisan issues.

On Friday morning, scouts from Homenetmen’s Boston chapter stood proudly in the Hall of Representatives, each holding American and Armenian flags on either side of the stately wood podium. Students from Watertown’s St. Stephen’s Armenian Elementary School led guests in the singing of the Star Spangled Banner and the Armenian national anthem—a rather emotional example of the dual identity of the Armenian Diaspora.

Resting peacefully in a wheelchair a few feet from the children was 109 year-old Armenian Genocide survivor, “Starry” Asdghik Alemian of Weymouth, Mass. As a great-great grandmother, Alemian and her descendants were described by State Representative Jonathan Hecht as a “living testimony of the indomitable spirit of the Armenian people.” Hecht presented Alemian with the governor’s proclamation of the Armenian Genocide from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

During his remarks, Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian shared the story of his own grandparents, who escaped the persecutions from Marash and eventually found opportunity and a chance for a new life in America. “They became Americans and were not held back for their ethnicity. They were the greatest patriots,” said Koutoujian, who also referenced last spring’s Velvet Revolution in Armenia. “This year has seen the most change and hope for Armenians. We are enjoying something very special. Both America and Armenia are a testament to transparency and democracy.”

“The history of the genocide is full of human tragedies, but also human bravery, philanthropy and humanitarian support,” said local entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr. Noubar Afeyan in his keynote address. Another proud grandson of Armenian Genocide survivors, Dr. Afeyan compelled guests to think about second chances and the immigrant experience. “Armenians have a lot to be thankful for. Every day that I live here, I feel a responsibility to do something about the opportunity that I was given.” Afeyan suggested to Armenians to use their storied past as a source for good and express their gratitude by supporting today’s refugees.

For State Representative Muradian, the only Armenian in the entire Massachusetts legislature, the event served as a reminder to educate those who may not know about the Armenian Genocide, that it’s the least descendants can do. “It is imperative that we continue to honor our ancestors,” said Muradian. “Those stories make up each and every one of us here today.”

During a musical interlude, Moscow-born clarinetist Narek Arutyunian captivated guests with the secular hymns of Khosrovidukht, an eighth century Armenian poet and musician. Clergy from the local Armenian community also led the group in an Armenian intercessory prayer. Following the ceremony, guests were invited to the Great Hall of Flags for light refreshments and to meet with Governor Baker.

Iraq's religious leader calls on Turkey to apologize for Armenian Genocide

The chairman of Iraq’s National Religious Council Sheikh Yusif Al-Nasri said Turkey must apologize to Armenians “for their actions” referring to the Armenian Genocide, which he had condemned during a meeting Monday with Armenia’s Ambassador to Iraq Hrachya Poladyan, Asbarez reports.

In discussing the Armenian Genocide issue, Al-Nasri strongly condemned “the inhuman crime committed in the Ottoman Empire,” before urging Turkish authorities to apologize for “their own generation.”

Al-Nasri was accompanied by members of Iraq’s Standing Committee on Coexistence and Communal Peace, a government body dedicated to advancing relations with the various ethnic and religious communities in the country.

The Muslim spiritual leaders briefed Poladyan on their efforts aimed at strengthening cooperation between religious and national minorities of Iraq, emphasizing the invaluable role of the Armenian community of Iraq and the Iraqi diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, especially during the war and its aftermath.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the spiritual leaders conveyed their greetings and well wishes to the His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, stressing the Iraqi government’s commitment to religious and national minorities. They also highlighted the need to develop joint initiatives to advance the needs of the multi-ethnic and multi-faith population of Iraq.

PM to represent France at Armenian Genocide commemoration ceremony on 24 April

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe will represent France at a ceremony commemorating the Armenia Genocide victims to be held at the Komitas Monument and Armenian Genocide Memorial in Paris on 24 April, Nouvelles d'Arménie reports.

The event is historic in a sense that it is the first official ceremony paying homage to the Genocide victims after French President Emmanuel Macron signed a decree to set April 24 as a national day of commemoration of the Armenian Genocide on 10 April.

Every year on 24 April Notre Dame cathedral in Paris would hold a requiem mass for the Armenian Genocide victims, with the ceremony slated for 22 April this year. However, due to the blaze that ravaged the cathedral on Monday, the liturgy will be offered at another church in Paris.

The iconic cathedral was to hold its 40th mass commemorating the Genocide martyrs this year.

France officially recognized the 1915 Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 2001.

Former U.S. ambassador to Armenia John Evans touched upon the destruction of Armenian churches during the Genocide in the context of fire of Notre Dame de Paris.

“Today, as France and the entire world mourn the destruction by fire of Notre Dame de Paris, I am thinking of what the Armenians lost in terms of churches, some filled with priests and people, in the Armenian Genocide. Horrific,” he tweeted.
