“Master of Duduk” — Legendary Armenian musician Jivan Gasparyan has died aged 92 Jivan-Gasparyan-8.png

Jivan Gasparyan, one of Armenia’s most celebrated musicians and composers, has passed away at the age of 92.

Eurovision fans will recognise him from the country’s Eurovision 2010 performance, where he accompanied Eva Riva on “Apricot Stone”. Jivan delivered the very first notes of the song all on his own, setting the scene beautifully with his control and command of the duduk — an ancient double-reed woodwind instrument made of apricot wood.

At age 82, he was the oldest-ever person to feature in a performance at the Eurovision Song Contest at the time.

Writing on social media, his grandson said: “The world suffered an unimaginable loss this night. It is with deep sorrow I inform you about this huge loss. Rest in peace and may the Lord keep your soul in lights.”

Jivan Gasparyan was born in Solak, Armenia and started to play the duduk when he was six years old.

In 1948, he became a soloist in the Armenian Song and Dance Popular Ensemble and the Yerevan Philharmonic Orchestra. He toured the world several times with a small ensemble playing Armenian folk music — helping members of the Armenian diaspora connect with their motherland, while also introducing foreigners to Armenia’s rich sounds.

He won four medals in UNESCO worldwide competitions. In 1973, he was awarded the honorary title People’s Artist of Armenia. In 2002, he received the WOMEX (World Music Expo) Lifetime Achievement Award.

Many people have encountered his music without knowing it, as he composed for several Hollywood soundtracks — including those for The Siege and Gladiator. In 2006, he was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Traditional World Music Album.

He was in-demand. Throughout his career, he collaborated with big-time artists, including Sting, Peter Gabriel, Michael Brook, Brian May, and Lionel Richie.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and fans.

He cast a spell over all who listened: Peter Gabriel shares tribute to Armenian duduk virtuoso Jivan Gasparyan

When he lifted his duduk to his lips he cast a spell over all who listened, English musician, singer, songwriter Peter Gabriel said in a tribute to Armenian duduk virtuoso Jivan Gasparayn, who passed away on Tuesday aged 92

“I fell in love with the music of the duduk when I was introduced to it during the research for the film score of Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ. In Armenia they say that when the duduk is played well, everyone cries. The great master of the instrument was Jivan Gasparyan,” Gabriel said.

“He was a delightful companion, with a great sense of mischief and I loved the soulfulness that poured out of him when we were lucky enough to see him or to play with him,” he added.

“One evening at Real World Studios he stood up in the dining room in the middle of the meal and said, “I am playing this for my mother.” Not a dry eye in the room. When he lifted his duduk to his lips he cast a spell over all who listened. Thank you, Jivan,” Peter Gabriel said.

UNESCO expresses its regret at the recent passing of Djivan Gasparyan, a renown Armenian musician and composer who was the master of the duduk, a double-reed woodwind instrument

Djivan Gasparyan made an outstanding contribution to the field of music and brought the unique sound of the duduk to the world through international performances, albums and the soundtracks he made for international films in which his music was featured. He also won numerous international awards. As a professor at the Yerevan State Musical Conservatory he shared his knowledge, talent and love of music with the next generation of musicians.

His promotion of this traditional instrument and music helped bring about the inscription in 2008 of Armenia’s Duduk and its music on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Ernesto Ottone R., UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture, expressed his condolences, noting that “Djivan Gasparyan was a cultural and musical powerhouse who brought the beauty of his unique music to the world. His artistry will be greatly missed.”
