Yes! You are right on the money. In traditional Armenian orthography, «իւ» is pronounced either /ju/ or /ʏ/ (symbols are in the International Phonetic Alphabet) depending on context. For example, իւղ (oil) is pronounced [juʁ], while գիւղ (village) is pronounced [kʏʁ] (NOT [kjuʁ]!!).

I'm glad that Armenians were able to resist the attempt to Russify and then destroy the Armenian orthography. Other Soviet Republics were not as steadfast in protecting their linguistic culture: Belarussian traditional orthography was destroyed by the Soviets:

Gor-Gor,

Your Mashdots argument is a fallacy. We do not know how many of our sounds were pronounced many centuries ago; that is correct. Languages change and evolve, of course. However, that DOES NOT MEAN that our next step should be to ALTER the language's orthography to correspond to how we pronounce those sounds today. THAT IS THE PROBLEM. Doing so cheapens the language and robs it of its history.

As for this: Բայց ելնելով այսօրվա արտասանությունից, ընդունված է...

Excuse me? Accepted by whom? Oh yes, I know. You mean to say "Because Armenians in Armenia pronounce it a certain way, then that is the accepted way."

Please use the IPA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Phonetic_Alphabet) to describe sounds to avoid ambiguity.

I said that գիւղ is pronounced [kʏʁ], not [kuʁ]. There is a big difference! Soviet Orthography is PREPOSTEROUS in that it was an attempt by the Soviets to Russify the Armenian orthography (and alphabet) and with the intent to eventually DESTROY it (as the Belarussian orthography was destroyed).

In soviet orthography, the Armenian language monophthong /ʏ/ (written իւ) was completely ERASED. Another example of usage of /ʏ/ is in the word սկիւր (squirrel).

And for a detailed LESSON in Traditional Armenian Orthography (the orthography of the Armenian Diaspora from Iran to Lebanon), you might have a look at the following site:
http://en.wikipedia....ian_Orthography

There is a reason why it's spelled Ուաշինկթըն in traditional Armenian orthography, because that gets pronounced as Washeengtun in Western Armenians (and Washeenk'tun in Eastern Armenian, with the apostrophe standing for an ejective). Վաշինգտոն gets pronounced Vasheengtun, note the "V"!

As for your other examples, those aren't examples of Traditional vs. Reformed orthography but rather Western vs. Eastern transliterations (except for you New York example). And I would argue that Նիւ is closer to the English pronunciation of New than is Նյու (new, not Neeyoo!). And իւ captures exactly "ew" in new, but without the trailing "w" sound.

It seems like these lessons are an abdomination to the Armenian language!

I wouldn't say *that*! I give Vartahoor a lot of credit for volunteering his time to write these lessons. They seem to be pretty accurate in describing Soviet Orthography, but there are some clear misunderstandings of traditional Armenian Orthography, and how Soviet Orthography changed the traditional orthorgraphy, and along the way destroying sounds and changing others.

Ինչպէս ասի վէրէվը SAS- ը շատ բարեացակամ մաrդ է;
Please allow me to continue in English, as this keyboard is killing me. I mean, despite the crowdedness , where we don’t even have spaces for punctuation marks, yet some idiots see fit to assign a key to “yev/ԵՒ”. There ought to be a law. I wish there was.
As I said above, SAS is very graciously well meaning person. Even if he may be a native Yerevan (now in Moscow), he does not deny his 2nd, 3rd, 4th ancestry from Van, and he does not hide his admiration of Varuzhan and Siamanto that he can read and understand better than many so called westerners.
He is one, unlike others whose main purpose is to create yet another war between the East and the West , filled with admiration towards our culture, regardless whether it was written in Polis, Beirut, Yerevan or Tiflis. It is a matter of good taste and goodwill unlike that disgusting post of “GIGOS” SAS does not speak from a position of inferiority, neither does he peak fro a position of superiority. His love of Armenian culture and literature, be it Isahakian, Terian or Varuzhan is infectious, to say the least.
As to his comments about “Washington” , “գիւղ/Gyough/gough/գուղ”, he may have overlooked my comments that ԻՒ was never meant to be pronounced, and is not as YU or OU but like the French U.. Coming back to “washington”, the Ւhiun waa nwvwr meant to sound like V/Վ but was devised to look and sound the Latin U, even if it has lost its original intent. In other wordsԱՍՏՈՒԱԾ was never meant to sound like “astvats” but as “astuwats”. I have even heard people say “asvats”, omitting the T. Does that mean we should say “asvats“ intead of “ast-u-wats“?,
In conclusion. This is not an act of war, it is love fest, only if those idiot proponents of Soviet Orthography and those other idiots who insist that Բ//Ben sounds Փ/Pyur nd Դ/Da sounds Tho/ Թ, and .Չ/CH sounds like J/Ջ.
Does anyone know the meaning of “compromise” and “reconciliation?, Yes, yes we know. We have been talking about Turkish-Armenian reconciliation. How about reconciliation of the so called Eastern and Western Arnenia(n)!!!

I've been reading this board long enough to have surmised that SAS is, in fact, a nice enough person.

However, that does not preclude me from saying that he approaches the issue of Eastern/Western Armenian from a position of assumed superiority.

He personally insulted me a few days ago with his Russian "himar/dancer" comment (a comment I presume he would not have made had I written my original post in a dialect other than Western Armenian), and it has only gotten worse from then. He has made fun of Western Armenian consonant pronunciation* (even when THAT WAS NEVER THE SALIENT ISSUE) and has insinuated that he knows Armenian better than I do. It is clear from what he writes and the way he writes it that he views Western Armenian as a lower form than Eastern Armenian. That, in addition to his personal attacks, is something I refuse to take lightly.

* A side note about Western Armenian consonant pronunciation. This was never an issue in this discussion, but since SAS has brought it up, I will offer my view of it. I admit, with no reservations, that the 10 consonant changes that have been made in Western Armenian pronunciation are deviations, and that the way those consonants are pronounced in Eastern Armenian are the original pronunciations. However, as I have stated, languages change and evolve. Languages develop dialects. I should point out here that the consonant changes in Western Armenian were a natural progression (UNLIKE Soviet orthography, which was forced on Armenians in Armenia). It's important to keep that in mind. What point is there to poke fun at Western Armenian consonant pronunciation?

any attempt, i repeat, ANY attempt to standardize the language, create rules of ANY kind, etc is a fallacy... no form of the language was handed down by god nor any of them grew on the tree of the languages... languages are formed by people who speak it... one's spoken form of the language is ALWAYS correct and superior one to him, and NO ONE can claim otherwise...

furthermore, i see no difference between soviet reformers, those who standardized wa, or mesrop mashtots... they all did what they thought was right to make the communication of the masses easier... afterall, isn't the point of any standardization JUST THAT?

any attempt, i repeat, ANY attempt to standardize the language, create rules of ANY kind, etc is a fallacy... no form of the language was handed down by god nor any of them grew on the tree of the languages... languages are formed by people who speak it... one's spoken form of the language is ALWAYS correct and superior one to him, and NO ONE can claim otherwise...

furthermore, i see no difference between soviet reformers, those who standardized wa, or mesrop mashtots... they all did what they thought was right to make the communication of the masses easier... afterall, isn't the point of any standardization JUST THAT?

Soviet Orthography is PREPOSTEROUS in that it was an attempt by the Soviets to Russify the Armenian orthography (and alphabet) and with the intent to eventually DESTROY it (as the Belarussian orthography was destroyed).

that's a conspiracy theory at best and just another fear factor insinuated in wa speakers by those to loathed ea at worst...
i cannot image a situation where a top soviet leader (presumably a non-armenian) would give an order to armenian linguists, "go reform your language and make it more like russian so it will eventually die..." and IF that has been ordered indeed, who was going to check on them for a job-well-done? lenin? beria? or stalin the man himself?

what is closer to reality is that most of those who worked on those reforms were educated in russia at one point or anther and had great russian language influence on their personal knowledge, assumptions, vision, etc in regards to armenian language...
