Kurdish crime boss Aslan Usoyan killed in suspected gang attack in daylight in central Moscow
One of Russia's most powerful mob bosses was shot dead by a sniper in broad daylight in central Moscow on Wednesday, in a suspected contract killing.
Aslan Usoyan, 75, better known by his mob name "Ded [Grandpa] Hasan", had survived at least two previous attempts on his life.
Media images of police swarming in the courtyard of a faded pre-revolutionary mansion and rumours of conflict between rival underworld gangs revived memories of the violent and chaotic Moscow that President Vladimir Putin has worked hard to present as long gone.
Usoyan, an ethnic Kurdish Yezidi originally from neighbouring Georgia, had built a vast criminal empire stretching across the former Soviet Union. He is believed to have been in a conflict for years with fellow crime boss Tariel Oniani, known as Taro, as the two battled for territory.
The war has been bloody. Many of those killed were Usoyan lieutenants working in Sochi, home to highly lucrative construction projects as the resort prepares to host the Winter Olympics in 2014. The most high-profile victim was Vyacheslav Ivankov, better known as "Yaponchik [Little Japanese]", who was killed by a sniper rifle in Moscow in 2009. The FBI suspected him of being a leading Russian crime boss in the United States following the fall of the Soviet Union.
An unnamed source in Russia's security services said that Usoyan is likely to have fallen victim to a clan war.
"The assassination carried out on Wednesday was probably the result of Aslan Usoyan's conflict with 'thieves in law' clans headed by immigrants from Georgia," the source told the state-run Interfax news agency, using Russian mafia terminology.
Usoyan was shot as he left a restaurant in central Moscow at 2:30pm. Police later found six bullet casings from a Soviet-designed AS Val in a building across the street. One bullet hit Usoyan in the head. Another two struck a passerby – the woman has been hospitalised with injuries to her leg and chest, Russian press reported.
Usoyan survived an assassination attempt in September 2010, after being shot in the stomach by a sniper. His associates refused to deny rumours of his death for weeks, out of concern for his safety.
On Wednesday, the tabloid Life News published a photograph of Usoyan's corpse.
Mark Galeotti, a professor at New York University who specialises in the Russian mafia, warned that the murder of as powerful a figure as Usoyan would likely lead to further warring.
"My suspicion is we are going to be seeing blood on the streets," Galeotti said. "It's likely this will lead to violence as a new leader tries to assert his power, with other gangs trying to nibble away at Usoyan's legacy."
"The Russian underworld is a much more volatile place than it was five years ago," he said. "It's not the 1990s – but, particularly because of the influx of Afghan heroin and the opportunities created by the Sochi Winter Olympics, the old pecking orders are in question."
A US diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks in 2010 described Russia as a "virtual mafia state".

The Russian Interior Ministry has confirmed that Aslan Usoyan, known as criminal boss Grandfather Khasan, died from wounds in the hospital after he was killed in central Moscow.
"Usoyan has died from wounds," the Interior Ministry told Interfax.
The killing of Usoyan could be linked to a conflict between criminal groups, a source in the law enforcement agencies told Interfax.
"The first thing that comes to mind in connection with the attack against Usoyan is a conflict between various criminal groups," the source said.
The source said Usoyan's killing could exacerbate the conflicts between criminal groups.

Usoyan was shot dead on a street a short walk from the Kremlin
A man said to have been Russia's top gangster has been shot dead leaving a restaurant in the centre of Moscow, reportedly by a sniper.
Aslan Usoyan, widely known as Grandpa Khasan, died in hospital after being brought there by his bodyguards, Russian media report.
A woman, said to be a restaurant employee, was injured in the leg.
Usoyan, 75, survived two previous assassination attempts in 1998 and 2010, when he was seriously injured.
According to a Financial Times report into organised crime from December 2011, he was "reckoned to be the highest-ranking mafia boss in Russia".
Born in Soviet Georgia in 1937, he received his first prison sentence in 1957 for resisting arrest and, during his third in the 1960s, became a "thief in law", a Russian term comparable to a Mafia "godfather".
His killing sparked fears of a turf war between organised crime groups. Russian MP Alexander Khinshtein, who sits on the State Duma's security committee, wrote on Twitter: "I am sure that a new criminal redistribution will begin now."
'Single bullet'
Usoyan was killed by a single bullet, Russia's federal Investigative Committee (SK) said on its website, announcing that an investigation had been opened.
Possible motives for the crime, it said, included his (unspecified) criminal activities.
Early Russian media reports suggested Usoyan had been shot in the stomach but a grainy photo of his body in a morgue has emerged, which suggests he was hit in the face. The morgue is under police guard.
Russian media say the attack appears to have been the work of a professional killer, who opened fire as Usoyan left the restaurant early on Wednesday afternoon.
The gunman was lying in wait in a building opposite the restaurant on Povarskaya Street, about a mile (1.6km) from the Kremlin, Russian news agencies report.
Six bullet cases were found on a staircase between the fourth and fifth floors of the building, along with a folding chair and a piece of cloth, SK spokesman Sergei Stukalov told Interfax news agency.
While no gun was reportedly recovered, an unnamed security source told Interfax the killer appears to have used a Val assault rifle fitted with a silencer - a weapon favoured by Russian special forces.
After news of the attack, Usoyan's nickname became a top trending name among Russian users of Twitter.
"Russia's missing its gangsters," one blogger tweeted. "Romance."
"End of an era," wrote another.

Aslan Usoyan, who was more commonly known as Ded Hasan (Grandpa Hasan), was the patriarch of one of Russia’s most infamous mafia clans. The tabloid news website Lifenews.ru published a bloody photo of Usoyan’s dead body.
The mobster had just left an Azeri restaurant around 2:30 p.m. when he was struck by gunfire. Reports said the shot came from a sniper rifle fired from a nearby rooftop. Russia’s Interfax news agency reports that a female bystander was also injured by gunfire.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the shooting, but Russian news reports immediately suspected it was the work of a rival gang.
Usoyan was an ethnic Kurd born in the former republic of Georgia, which was then part of the Soviet Union. He had previously survived at least two other assassination attempts. In 2010 he was wounded but survived after being shot in the stomach by a Kalashnikov rifle. At the time investigators suggested it was over a dispute with another Georgian mob boss over construction projects for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Interfax quoted an unnamed law enforcement source saying it appears the two attacks were organized by the same people. The news agency also reported that his killing could spark renewed conflict between criminal groups.
A Russian lawmaker was quoted saying today’s hit appeared to be meticulously planned.
“There is no doubt this daring crime was well prepared,” State Duma Security and Anti-Corruption Committee Chairperson Irina Yarovaya told reporters, according to Interfax.
Yarovaya dismissed suggestions that the assassination marked a return to the bloody “wild west” days of mob warfare in the 1990s.
“We have a different country, different laws and different order now,” she said.

MOSCOW (AP) -- Police say one of the leaders of organized crime in Russia has been gunned down in Moscow.
Aslan Usoyan, also known as Grandpa Khasan, came from a caste of professional criminals who sport elaborate tattoos, follow unwritten prison laws codified in Stalinist-era Gulags and have been romanticized in countless popular songs.
The 75-year-old ethnic Kurd was born in the former Soviet republic of Georgia. Police say for the past two decades he headed one of the region's most powerful criminal groups, which trafficked in drugs and weapons and controlled underground casinos and legal businesses.
Police said an unidentified gunman fired a single shot Tuesday at Usoyan near a restaurant in central Moscow.
Since 2006, Usoyan had been at war with a criminal group headed by another Georgian, Tariel Oniani.
