OLYMPIAD: RESULTS MAY BE REVIEWED

The results of the recent World Chess Olympiad in Dresden may be reviewed.

Leading chess player of Ukraine Vasili Ivanchuk refused to move on to a doping test after the 11th tournament. As a result, the renowned grosmeister may be disqualified for 2 years and Ukraine may lose the Gaprindashvili cup, which was given after the counting of the results of the Ukrainian men and women chess players.

Based on these results, Ukraine was in first place and Armenia came in second because the men’s team placed 1st, while the women placed 6th. If Ukraine is disqualified, Armenia will place first with the total of men’s and women’s results. The president of FIDE Kirsan Iliumzhinov has personally made an announcement regarding the possible disqualification of Ukraine.

THIS TIME A TIE

The second chess match between the youth teams of Armenia and India ended 2-2. Although the match was tied, the games were productive on all 4 boards.

Zaven Andreasyan won Gupta, but on the 2nd board Hrant Melkumyan lost to Aruni and the score was tied. Avetik Grigoryan lost to Adhibani. Samvel Ter-Sahakyan saved Armenia from a loss and won Sen Gupta. After the tied game, India’s team is on top. Our young chess players need to win in the 3rd round in order to make it a tie.

AZERI CHESS PLAYERS UNDER PRESSURE

Zeiynab Mamediarova, who is the best chess player of Azerbaijan,
said that Azeri women chess players were under pressure as "enemious
character" against Armenians is sowed among them.

According to Azeri media, Mamediarova admitted that the most difficult
meeting in Dresden was the one with Armenians when they have been
crucially defeated by 4-0 points.

"The only reason of that defeat was the pressure on us. Armenians
did not have such feelings and they managed to get well prepared to
the game. Any game with Armenia is much spoken in our country and
everything is accepted not as it is to be," she said.

Don't want to play expert on this but there are stuff out there that improves the consentration and alertness. I've heard on the radio that students take this kind of medications during exams. To what degree it helps who knows? But it's out there.

During our days "dexedrine/amphetamine/speed" was the drug of choice. I never partook. Some would swallow it to stay awake the night before, and in the morning after they would be so confused as to not know thier A-s from their Z-s.

This reminds me of the beta blockers some music schools prescribe to students to overcome performance anxiety. BETA BLOCKERS AND PERFORMANCE ANXIETY IN MUSICIANS

I thought that was called coffee.

During our days "dexedrine/amphetamine/speed" was the drug of choice. I never partook. Some would swallow it to stay awake the night before, and in the morning after they would be so confused as to not know thier A-s from their Z-s.

Yup - the negatives far outweigh the temporary self-perception of productivity. Although here's some food for thought:
I had a friend who often found school boring and unchallenging. He couldn't study because he was bored out of his wits - he siply could not concentrate. His solution was to create for himself a greater degree of difficulty by smoking pot before studying. This added an additional hurdle and "forced" him to try to concentrate and remained focused. I thought it was a crock - but he ended up with a near perfect GPA.

ARONIAN DEFEATS AZERI GRANDMASTER

Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian scored a victory over Azerbaijani Teimour Radjabov in the 8th round of Amber 2009 tournament. Aronian shares the 2nd and 3rd position with Norwegian Magnus Carlsen with 10 points. World champ Viswanathan Anand is leading with 10.5 points after defeating Russian grandmaster Vladimir Kramnik. In the 9th round, Aronian will play vs. Russia’s Alexander Morozevich
