Ararat was a phenomenal movie. And everyone backed Egoyan into a corner for it. You know why? Do you know how many non-Armenian critics exclaimed that it was preachy?! And let's look at the otherside. The entire Armenian community was pissed at him for not being preachy enough. Well, I can tell you, none of these people no a damn thing about Egoyan or even film for that matter. The Armenian community was so busy making Egoyan's movie for him that when it came out they were upset because it's not what they wanted. Little do they know that it would have been impossible for him to make the movie they wanted. It's Egoyan! Haven't any of these people seen his other movies?! Don't they realize that by making the movie they want he will undermine his entire career up until that point?! Egoyan is an artist true to himself and I love him for it because he didn't dumb himself down. That would have been very detrimental to all concerned. It's nothing new that people don't understand and don't appreciate the intellectual side of art.
I know, he made a modern movie about the Armenian genocide by using his own unique artistic style. He also won an award for Ararat.
But I don't think it has anything to do with ''preachy''-ness. If someone made a movie focused on 1915, it would have been more worthwhile. It's just my opinion...
And hey, I didn't say I hated the movie.

I don't believe a movie will make any real impact,... it will be answered by McCarthys etc... what we need to do first, is a really good long and documented documentary with Fahrenheit 9/11 style, about the Turkish government denial, how it grants universities, corrupt researchers, double talks etc... Right now, such documentaries get many people attention, it IS in. We can even concentrat it on America and its role in this denial, to give of it a Fahrenheit 9/11 flavour. We are not ready for a movie, and a Hollywood style movie regarding the Armenian genocide will not work and will be a wasted money. A documentary will cost much much less, and will shut revisionists, while a movie can be easily termed as an undocumented propaganda... it will be answered by reffering to revisionists scholars, while a documentary will document the cases of such revisionist scholars, shutting the manipulators before they even attempt answering. We even have Hastert cases now.
It doesn't take much to make a good documentary, so we can pay a lot for the distribution to be sure that it will be played everywhere. That's what it really takes. When the times come, it will be the Oscar style movie. But it is still not the time for that.
A Fahrenheit 911-style documentary would be very interesting.
Araz Artinian - the one who made 20voices.com - has a documentary about the Armenian Genocide. It's called ''The Genocide in Me'', and it's a bit more about the influence of Genocide in her own life. It's coming out in Fall.
