Yes, both will pass the committee stage. The vote in 2000 was 24 to 11 in committee.

If it gets to the floor, it will pass in a full House vote. The problem is getting it to the floor because Speaker Hastert makes that decision.

Please post updates on the two bills for those of us who are stuck in offices that don't allow proper connections to view it...

Lantos supporting it! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!This is a real breakthrough. It looks like all the positive dialogue with American Jews is working. It didn't hurt either that Spelling's daughter fell in love with and married an Armenian.

I think that will be a bigger story than the bills passing...

a senator from CA said it good,

he said that yes, we and Turkey are allies, yes Turkey helped us a lot, but still this does not mean that we should look the other way of a horrific and historical fact that happened

I was looking at how the members of the committee voted in 2000 and many of the 11 who voted against it are gone. Only 3 of the 11 that voted against it are still on the committee -- Lantos (Calif.), Faleomavaega (Samoa), and Burton (Indiana) -- and now Lantos is supporting it. Not only should the bills easily pass, assuming the new members aren't all against it, but they should pass with great majorities. The top 2 republicans were not present last time to vote - Hyde and Leach.

I'm guessing Hyde, Burton, and Faleomagaega are three of the eleven...

Was 33 to 11 for the resolution with the four congressman - H. Res. 316 - or the one by Schiff only - H. Con. Res. 195.

That is great news.

Now the pressure will be on Hastert to bring it to the floor of the House.

I think that it is becoming increasingly clear to some of the American top brass that in order to adhere Armenia to the West (we are talking about Turkey here) the Turkey-Armenia divide must be settled. This is part of a greater regional strategy, to pull Armenia closer to the West and loosen some of its glue-like ties to Russia and Iran. Turkey is blind to this greater strategy because it is so tied to its myths that it can not see the bigger picture. We are dealing with Turkish xenophobia.
