A French artist of Armenian origin, world renown Garzu (Garnik Zouloumian), who died August 12 in France at 93, dreamt of having his own museum in Armenia's capital Yerevan, RFE/RL reported from Paris.
During his first visit to Yerevan he was even shown the location where his museum was to be set up. "But after the terrible earthquake of 1988 in Armenia I am not sure about it," he had told the reporter in the wake of the quake.
His first visit to Armenia was in 1966, during which he made his relations with Armenian artists closer and deeper.
Speaking about he political developments in Armenia, or as he used to say "the half freedom", Garzu had expressed hope that it would provide good prospects for the development of Armenian painting. He was much concerned about the future of Armenia.
He liked to encourage Armenian painters. During his last years he was often seen at the hall in the center of Paris, where the works of the Armenian painters are displayed.
Garzu last visited Armenia in 1984 to receive the Armenian Painters' Union prize after Martiros Sarian. He was the first among the Diaspora-Armenian painters to receive it.
