Artsakh pianist wins Grand Prix at international competition-festival

Anahit Arushanyan, a young pianist from Stepanakert, participated in the Spanish annual International Stars at Tenerife (Tenerife Stars) contest-festival, held on Canary Islands, and won the Grand Prix.

Anahit Arushanyan, a first year student at the Long Island Conservatory in New York, told a reporter of the Artsakhpress that representatives of 26 countries were participating in the festival.

“I have taken part in the festival with the works of Rakhmaninov, Chopin, Beze, and Brahms, and I am very happy that my performances have been highly appreciated,” said Arushanyan, adding that besides the Grand Prix, she also received an invitation to participate in two other contest festivals.

According to our interviewer, the first will be held in St. Petersburg, Russia, on January 3-7, where the famous Russian pianist Savshinsky International Competition-Festival will take place, and the second – in April, in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany.

AA Trucks-ի հայաստանյան մասնաճյուղի տնօրեն Արմեն Գագիկյանն էլ հայտնեց, որ մեքենան հայ-ամերիկյան համատեղ արտադրության նոր մակնիշի բեռնատար է լինելու։ Նա նշեց, որ բեռնատարներ կառաջարկվեն տնտեսական տարբեր բնույթի գործունեություն ծավալող ընկերություններին, ինչպես նաև ուժային կառույցներին:

«Բեռնատարի ներքին կահավորումը կհամապատասխանեցվի պատվիրատուի գործունեությանն ու շահագործման նպատակներին»,- ասաց Արմեն Գագիկյանը:

Հոկտեմբերին կառավարության որոշմամբ AA Trucks ընկերությանը «Ալյանս» ազատ տնտեսական գոտու շահագործողի թույլտվություն էր տրամադրվել:

Հայտարարվել էր, որ ծրագրի շրջանակում ներդրումը կկազմի մոտ $40 մլն:Առաջին երկու տարում կստեղծվի 40 նոր աշխատատեղ՝ 150.000 դրամ միջին աշխատավարձով, իսկ հետագայում արտադրանքի ծավալների աճի արդյունքում՝ 1000-ից ավելի նոր աշխատատեղ:

IPod designer defeated by Armenian 6-year-old chess player

YEREVAN.—The American inventor, the founder of Nest Labs, the winner of Armenian president's award for global contribution in IT Tony Fadell visited the Chess Academy of Armenia on November 17.

IPod designer Tony Fadell toured the academy. He also was interested about the number of students, and Academy’s programs.

At the end of the visit, he played a game with a 6-year-old boy.  Armenian boy managed to checkmate the IPod designer in a very short period of time.

Synopsys Armenia executive director Hovik Musaelyan, the Founder of Viasfer Technopark Tony Moroyan, accompanied Fadell. Later, the mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan also joined them.

Tony Fadell arrived in Armenia on a two-day visit. He became the eighth winner of the Award for Global Contribution in the Area of Information Technologies that was established back in 2009.

Construction of 8th Armenian school in France launches in Valence

The Mayor of Valence, Nicolas Daragon, attended the land blessing ceremony for a future French-Armenian daily school - the eighth in the country - in the city on Sunday, November 26.

The ceremony was officiated by Bishop Norvan Zakarian and Reverend Fathers Nareg Vartanian and Antranik Maldjian, the school's administration said in a Facebook post.

The Valence Armenian Cultural Center has embarked on the ambitious but much needed project to build the bilingual school in the city.

There are 7 Franco-Armenian schools in France ( Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Nice), but Valence is the only city with a strong Armenian community not to have a daily school, although 10% of its citizens are of Armenian origin.

After the Genocide of 1915, many Armenians took refuge in France in the 1920s, with the first several hundred Armenians being recruited by Valence employers in 1923. As of 1997, 7,500 people in Valence belonged to the Armenian community, turning it into one of the largest in France: the Armenian National Union is also based in Valence.

In the commune's Armenian quarter, a street is named after Armenia and a square is named afterFrench-Armenian poet and activist Missak Manouchian.

Armenian Wins Jiu Jitsu World Championship

 

Ara Janigian is named world Jiu Jitsiu champion

ATHENS (Azad Or)—Greek-Armenian athlete Ara Janigian won the gold medal on Friday in the international Jiu Jitsu competition, becoming the world champion of the sport.

During the Jiu Jitsu World Championship Games being held in Bogota, Columbia, Janigian, competing in the 56-kilogram category, beat athletes from Israel and Columbia to reach the finals on Friday, when he beat his opponent from Kazakhstan.

Janigian has been training for a long time and adhering to a strict diet. His perseverance got him to Bogota, where despite facing climate and challenges he was able to beat the odds and become world champion.

Armenia boxers achieve good results in Poland

Armenian boxers have been successful at the 5th International Elite Men and Women Boxing Tournament “Leszek Drogosz Memorial” that was held in Kielce, Poland.

Team Armenia traveled to Poland with five athletes, and the squad won three gold, one silver, and one bronze medals. 
Narek Minasyan, Gor Yeritsyan and Koryun Soghomonyan became gold medalists, Anush Grigoryan won a silver medal in the women’s competition, and Aram Avagyan placed third.

NASA awards Georgian-Armenian female pilot Nadezhda Benklyan

NASA astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper has awarded Georgian-Armenian female pilot Nadezhda Benklyan with The International Women of Courage Award from the U.S embassy. Nadezhda is the first and only female pilot in Georgia’s civil aviation, Sputnik Georgia reported.

The awarding ceremony was held at the Georgian Aviation University. NASA’s astronaut met with the students and shared her experience.

Piper has achieved the rank of Captain in the United States Navy. The astronaut flown into space in 2006 for the first time.

“It is a great honor for me, especially because such a significant person has awarded me. I am thrilled. It is an incredible feeling when such a person admires you. It turns out that she wanted to become a pilot, but was unable due to vision problems," said Benklyan.

Benklyan began working for the Georgian Airways a few months ago.

Armenian GM Gabriel Sargissian wins Chess Classic FIDE Open

Armenian grandmaster Gabriel Sargissian won the Chess Classic FIDE Open tournament which is held on the sidelines of London Chess Classic.

Securing a total of 7.5 points, Sargissian left behind more than 280 participants to take the winner's title.

Hrant Melkumyan, also from Armenia, took the second spot after leading the event throughout the whole tournament.

Sébastien Mazé of France took the third spot.

Artsakh sportsman Artur Arushanyan won a victory over Russia representative Farid Kasumov.

Armenia’s Tigran Harutyunyan wins 1st ALAIN Juniors Chess Championship U20

The 1st ALAIN Juniors Chess Championship U20 international tournament took place in Al Ain, UAE during holidays. 143 chess players, including 2 GMs and 6 IMs representing 11 countries participated in the event.

Armenia had five participants in the tournament and the representative of Armenia IM Tigran Harutyunyan claimed the title of winner of the 1st ALAIN Juniors Chess Championship U20, the Chess Federation of Armenia reported.

Harutyunyan scored 7.5 points out of 9 which was enough for the title.

Three representatives of Armenia Artur Davtyan, Vahe Danielyan and Hovhannes Hakobyan scored 7 points apiece and shared 3-10 places. After tie-break Davtyan came 6th, Danielyan – 7th and Hakobyan – 9th.

The fifth representative of Armenia Sona Asatryan took the 16th place with 6.5 points.

Armenian professor sworn in as new president of University of Sao Paulo

Professor Vahan Agopyan of Armenian origin took over as new president of the University of Sao Paulo. The solemn ceremony of the university council took place on January 29 at the Bandeirantes Palace, the seat of state government.

As foreign ministry reported in a release, Sao Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin, present at the ceremony, expressed confidence the university led by Agopyan will continue recording new achievements for the sake of the city and Brazil. 

In his speech Professor Agopyan stressed his Armenian origin and acclaimed the Armenian Ambassador of Brazil and representatives of the Armenian community present at the event.

To note, Vahan Agopyan, is an engineer and a full professor at the Polytechnic School (Poli/USP) and holds a doctorate from King's College London. He formerly directed Poli/USP and the São Paulo Institute for Technological Research (IPT). He served as chair of the Board of Trustees of the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN) and was a member of Sao Paolo Research Foundation's (FAPESP) Board of Trustees. Professor Vahan Agopyan previously served as deputy president of the university.

Armenian teen wins 1st place at Los Angeles County Science Fair

PanARMENIAN.Net - Daron Yacoubian, a 7th grade student at St. Gregory Hovsepian Armenian School, has won first place at the Los Angeles County Science Fair, Junior Engineering Applications Division, Asbarez reports.

His project entitled PorSHA (Portable Solar Heating Apparatus) is a floating solar powered device designed to eliminate the need for a pool heater.

Because of his first-place win, Daron has qualified for the California State Science Fair in April. He also qualifies to participate in the Broadcom National Competition, the premier science and engineering competition for middle school students.

Daron is the son of Dr. Stephan Yacoubian, an orthopedic surgeon,and Maro Yacoubian, an attorney, of Glendale, California.
