* Lima, Jul. 03 (ANDINA). Uruguayan coach Sergio Markarian has been appointed as coach of the Peruvian national team for the Copa América and the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Markarian, whose primary mission will be to lead Peru to the 2014 World Cup of Brazil, has previously coached Peruvian clubs Universitario and Sporting Cristal in the 1990s.
His appointment was announced by Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) President Manuel Burga and his assistant will be Uruguayan Pablo Bengoechea.
Markarian, 65, said that Peru have quality players to qualify for the next World Cup finals in Brazil, so that he committed to do a serious job and fulfill his objective.
However, the former Paraguay coach pointed out that improving the current level of Peruvian football will take a medium and long-term work.
“The main goal is to qualify for the World Cup, it won’t be easy, but we will do our best,” he said.
Sergio Markarian never played football professionally and became a coach in 1974, achieving success in most of the teams he has managed.
He was the head coach for Mexican team Cruz Azul. On 20 December 2008, he became the head coach of Chilean giants Universidad De Chile. He resigned the post six months later, after winning the Apertura (Opening) Tournament 2009.
