Artsakh to Play in World Soccer Cup

artsakh-football.jpg

The Artsakh National Soccer Team lined up for a match with Abkhazia, October 22, 2012.

STEPANAKERT—Nagorno-Karabakh will be among the twelve teams participating in the first ever World Cup held for teams outside international soccer’s governing body, FIFA.

The tournament to be held in Ostersund, in central Sweden, in the first week of June will be hosted by the Sapmi people, also known as Laplanders. It is to be held under the aegis of CONIFA, a global umbrella organization for all the football teams outside FIFA.

There are more than 5,500 ethnicities around the world and hundreds of isolated regions that don’t have an international arena to play international football. CONIFA organizes the official World Championship for teams outside FIFA, continental championships, international tournament and cups combined with cultural events and youth exchanges.

According to the organization’s official website, the 12 teams will include: Abkhazia, Aramean Suryoye, Kurdistan, Tamil Eelam, Zanzibar, Darfur United, Ellan Vannin, Quebec, Nagorno-Karabakh, Padania, Sapmi and Occitania. The tournament will take place from June 1 to 8.

The Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) protested CONIFA, the Swedish Football Federation, and FIFA regarding the participation of Artsakh.

The Artsakh National Soccer Team played in a similar competition in 2012 that included Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Trans-Dnester, Kosovo and Tibet as participants.

ConiFA rejects Azerbaijan’s protest against participation of Karabakh in World Cup of unrecognized countries

ConiFA responded to the protest of the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan in connection with the participation of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic in the World Cup of the unrecognized countries.

“In fact this is what ConIFA is all about: Giving unrepresented regions, people, minorities, nations and isolated territories the chance to represent them through football. Without judging on the political situation or the dependence or independence of Nagorno-Karabkah we will insist on our invitation, which we communicated to the AFFA (Azerbaijani Football Federation – ed.) in written form today,” the statement reads.

“The ConIFA World Football Cup and furthermore the ConIFA in general is about bridging the world and representing the unrepresented. It is a fact that Nagorno-Karabakh is self-controlled today and in particular, and this is one of the major facts for us, that the Artsakh Football Federation is neither a part of the AFFA nor any other FIFA member. This means that football in Nagorno-Karabakh is totally isolated from the world community and Nagorno-Karabakh players and clubs neither get the chance to enter any international matches nor play in international cups,” the statement reads.

The confederation believes that people from each angle of the world should have the chance to play international football and to represent their culture!

“Thus we were left with no choice but declining the request of AFFA. Nevertheless we hope that AFFA respects our decision and we want to point out again that this decision should not be understood as a political statement or an offense against AFFA, the Republic of Azerbaijan or the Azerbaijani people. We respect everyone equally regardless of his or her heritage, culture, religion or political views,” the ConiFA concludes.

Yesterday AFFA protested the ConiFA in connection with the planned participation of the football team of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic in the World Cup. ConiFA disseminated information about the first World Cup to be held from June 1 to 8, among the unrecognized countries. NKR team is also invited to participate in it.

President ConIFA: We did not expect that Nagorno Karabakh will present such strong football team

Nagorno Karabakh team is one of the favorites on the official FIFA World Cup among countries which are not FIFA members, president of the Confederation of Independent Football Associations (ConIFA) Per Anders Blind told the journalists.

ConIFA President noted that it was not expected that Nagorno Karabakh would perform such a strong team.

Speaking about the obstacles that the participants of the championship face, Blind noted the visa problem, especially if these states are outside the EU. As for the Nagorno Karabakh case the organization had received Azerbaijan’s protest, who demanded not to allow Nagorno Karabakh team to the tournament, the president said. A similar letter Azerbaijan sent to FIFA.

ConIFA’s answer was unequivocal: Artsakh team, regardless of its status, is currently isolated from the football world, and to correct this situation, it should take part in the World Cup, said the president of the Confederacy.

According to Blind, organization enables the unrecognized states in the whole world to get out of isolation and feel part of the sporting world.

Secretary General Sasha Tillmans and Director of Media Marin Siliis visited Artsakh before the tournament and shared impressions. "Nagorno Karabakh is a miracle. The people there are very friendly and hospitable. I loved the sculpture "Tatik-Papic." Nature is impressive," told Siliis.

According to him, they met with President Bako Sahakyan, Foreign Minister Karen Mirzoyan and other officials. They visited Shushi, Gandzasar, the museum of Tigranakert.

Tillmans in his turn noted with a smile that "at some point Marin expressed a desire to move to live and work in Artsakh."

For the first time the Nagorno Karabakh team participates in the official World Cup among countries which are not FIFA members. The World Cup kicked off yesterday in the Swedish town of Ostersund. Nagorno Karabakh team matched on June 1st with the team of Isle of Man, and on the third of June match against Nice is planned. Teams of Abkhazia, Darfur, Tamil Eelam, Padania, Lapland, Kurdistan, etc. take part in the championship too.

In February the Association of Football Federations of Azerbaijan (AFFA) protested against the CONfederation of Independent Football Associations (ConiFA) in connection with the participation of the football team of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic in the championship. ConiFA refused the protest of Azerbaijan.
