Azerbaijan Launches Attack on Armenia’s Border Regions

pngkeikszoNzB.png

Explosions attributed to artillery and drones were reported by residents of Vardenis, Jermuk, Goris, and Tatev – cities within Armenia proper – shortly after midnight on Tuesday. Armenia has blamed neighboring Azerbaijan for the attack, RT reported.

Shots are being fired “along the entire line of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border,” and the government in Yerevan has called an urgent meeting, according to local media.

The Armenian Defense Ministry said the army of Azerbaijan has used heavy artillery and drones are also being used. A Turkish-made Bayraktar drone was allegedly shot down over Vardenis, which is in northern Armenia and not adjacent to the disputed region of Nagorno Karabakh. Armenian troops are “giving an adequate response,” Yerevan said.

The intense firefight which began as a result of the large-scale Azerbaijani provocation still continues, according to the Armenian Ministry of Defense spokesperson Aram Torosyan. “The exchange of intensive gunfire sparked by the large-scale Azerbaijani provocation is continuing,” he said.

“The Armed Forces of Armenia are taking adequate countermeasures. The Ministry of Defense will regularly issue official updates on the developments,” added Torosyan.

Starting at 12:05 a.m. on September 13, the Azerbaijani Armed Forces launched intense artillery and large caliber firearm shelling of Armenian positions in the direction of Goris, Sotk and Jermuk.

The Azerbaijani forces are also using UAVs in the attack, the Armenian Ministry of Defense said.

Armenia’s Defense Ministry said that the “intensive” shelling began shortly after midnight. It gave no other details.

Residents of several Armenian border communities told RFE/RL’s Armenian Service that they are hearing powerful explosions and gunfire. The mayor of one such village, Verin Shorzha, spoke of “intensive gunfire” coming from Azerbaijani army positions across the local section of the long border.

Another local government was quoted by news.am as saying that the residents of the nearby village of Norabak are fleeing their homes.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held a telephone conversation with President Vladimir Putin of Russia and provided a detailed briefing of Azerbaijan’s attack on Armenia.

The government of Azerbaijan said Armenia “began widespread provocations” against the Azeri armed forced, which responded with “intensive fire” on Armenian positions.

“This evening my thoughts are with Armenia and Armenians. Azerbaijan launched a large-scale attack, once again violating the territorial integrity of our friendly country. Tomorrow I will immediately appeal to Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna so that France stands by Armenia,” wrote French MP Sabrina Agresti-Roubache in a post on Twitter.

This is a developing story.

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 13, ARMENPRESS. US Congresswoman Jackie Speier commented on the shelling of Armenian peaceful settlements by Azerbaijani armed forces, emphasizing that Azerbaijan shells internationally recognized Armenian settlements.

“I am outraged by reports of heavy and coordinated Azeri artillery strikes on peaceful Armenian towns. To be clear: these are internationally recognized Armenian towns, NOT disputed territory. It's unconscionable that the US continues to provide Aliyev with military aid”, she wrote.

Armenia denounces the death of about 50 servicemen in clashes with Azerbaijan
Daniel Stewart - 4h ago
he Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinian, has denounced Tuesday the death of about 50 military personnel in the clashes registered during the early hours of Tuesday with the Azerbaijani Army in several points of the common border, in a new upsurge of hostilities.
"The Azerbaijani Armed Forces have launched an attack on Armenia from four directions and two or three other directions were added later," he said in an appearance before the Parliament in which he put the number of servicemen killed in combat at 49, as reported by the Armenian news agency Armenpress.

Thus, he said that "Azerbaijan is trying to misleadingly present these actions as a response to some kind of provocation". "We have to say that this is an absolute lie and false information", he added, before stressing that there was no provocation in the area.

Pashinian also pointed out that "the intensity of the fighting has decreased", although he stressed that "Azeri attacks continue in one or two directions". "The Defense Ministry and the Army General Staff are assessing the situation, analyzing the losses and the information will be officially published once it is clarified," he said.

Moreover, he has confirmed that the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is holding a session of its Permanent Council following the request for support made by Armenia after the Azeri attack. "We have appealed to Russia on the basis of the 1997 friendship treaty and we will call on the UN Security Council to discuss the situation urgently," he reiterated.

Azerbaijan described the news about Azerbaijani intervention in Armenian territory as "nothing but nonsense" and stressed that "the only aggressor and occupying state in the region is the Republic of Armenia". It also stressed that "the main purpose of regular artillery attacks by Armenia on Azeri army positions is to postpone the signing of a peace treaty and the construction and restoration work in the liberated territories," the Azeri Defense Ministry said.

Armenia and Azerbaijan were at loggerheads in 2020 over control of Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory with a majority Armenian population that has been the focus of conflict since it decided to secede in 1988 from the Soviet-integrated Azerbaijan region.

The hostilities between the two countries lasted six weeks and left thousands dead. They finally ceased when the two countries reached a Russian-brokered cease-fire agreement allowing Russian peacekeepers to settle in Nagorno-Karabakh for a period of five years.

Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention condemns war of aggression that Azerbaijan is committing against Armenia

1092309.jpg 10:28, 13 September 2022

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 13, ARMENPRESS. The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention condemned the war of aggression that Azerbaijan is committing against Armenia.

The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention issued a statement, saying:

“We condemn the war of aggression that Azerbaijan is committing against the Republic of Armenia & Armenian people. Despite agreements for a ceasefire, Azerbaijan’s general rhetoric by its government indicates a continuous intent to destroy Armenian identity & territory.⁣

The current bombing of Armenia’s borders constitute an international crime & must be condemned by the world. NATO, Russia, & Iran must each defend Armenian territory & pressure Azerbaijan & Turkey to end their genocidal assaults on the Armenian people.⁣

Military aid to these countries must stop, immediately. Turkey must cease their genocidal attacks on Armenia or be expelled from NATO.⁣

The world cannot stand by & allow Armenians to, once again, be destroyed. The world must act immediately to prevent genocide against Armenians by isolating & sanctioning Azerbaijan.⁣

The world must focus on the Southern Caucasus region as the Armenian people are suffering from rampant anti-Armenian sentiment & a continuous genocide.”

“The Lemkin Institute calls on @potus Sec. #AntonyBlinken, @berniesanders @antonioguterres @unitednations @amnesty @usembarmenia #USEmbassyAzerbaijan & others to act immediately & address #Azeri attacks against Armenians,” the institute tweeted.

“The Lemkin Institute also commends Representative Adam Schiff for acknowledging Azerbaijan’s attack on Armenia & for calling for the United States to cease aid to Azerbaijan.”

Azerbaijan refuses to negotiate peace also over principles proposed by Armenia – PM

Share

1092332.jpg 12:06, 13 September 2022

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 13, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan explained the reasons behind Azerbaijan’s attack on Armenia.

In remarks delivered to parliament, Pashinyan said that all claims that Azerbaijan launched the attack in response to an alleged provocation by the Armenian military are fake.

“In the recent days you saw that the Azerbaijani side was constantly spreading reports in the information warfare genre on so-called attacks by the Armenian military, and the Defense Ministry was denying these reports because these claims were false,” Pashinyan said.

PM Pashinyan said the situation first of all is related to the Karabakh negotiations process.

“You all remember that in March of 2022 Azerbaijan presented five proposals regarding a peace treaty and proposed to sign a peace treaty based on this. Our response to that was the following: there is nothing unacceptable for us in these proposals, but we believe that these terms must be supplemented and based on these supplemented terms we are ready to negotiate and sign a peace treaty in case of agreeing over the respective points. Certainly, it seemed that there was an understanding around the subject, but over the course and namely during the Brussels meeting it turned out and it was explained that nevertheless Azerbaijan is refusing to negotiate also based on the principles presented by us. You remember that these principles contained several points. One of them was the preservation of the principles of the 2020 November 9 and 2021 January 11 and November 26 trilateral statements, citing these principles and statements,” Pashinyan said.

The next important point related to the security and rights of the people of Nagorno Karabakh and the status stemming from it.

“Essentially, Azerbaijan’s position which is expressed and was expressed during the negotiations process is the following: they don’t want to discuss the Karabakh issue with Armenia because their stance is that the Karabakh issue is resolved or at least it is a domestic issue of Azerbaijan and they don’t want to discuss it with the Republic of Armenia,” the PM said.

We don’t plan to give corridor to anyone through territory of Armenia – PM Pashinyan

Share

1092337.jpg 12:29, 13 September 2022

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 13, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijan is distorting the 2020 November 9 trilateral statement and is speaking about having a corridor through the territory of Armenia, PM Nikol Pashinyan said in parliament.

“Our position has been and continues to be the following: we don’t plant to give a corridor to anyone through the territory of the Republic of Armenia, but we accept and are even interested in opening and unblocking of roads through the territory of the Republic of Armenia in the logic that all countries of the region can use this road, including Armenia and Azerbaijan. If you remember the clause 9 of the November 9 statement mentions, the first sentence is about unblocking, unblocking of economic and transport connections and routes of the region, about opening and re-opening. You know that this subject is explained in the January 11, 2021 trilateral statement and it is recorded what actions must be done to implement clause 9 of the November 9 trilateral statement,” Pashinyan said.
