Press Release

Armenian Genocide Denial Reported to the Dutch Police

The Hague, 27 June 2014 The Joint Armenian Organisations, namely the
Federation of Armenian Organisations in the Netherlands (FAON) and Dutch
Armenian Committee for Justice and Democracy (Hay Tad), have today reported
the organisers, speakers and participants of a Turkish rally on 1 June 2014
in Almelo to the police. The rally was intended to be a demonstration
against the Genocide memorial recently erected on the private grounds of the
Armenian Church in Almelo, however, it turned into anti-Armenian chanting
and denial of the Armenian Genocide. Roughly 3000 protestors gathered in
Almelo from cities all over the Netherlands.

According to the Joint Armenian Organisations, the participants of the rally
are guilty of group defamation, discrimination, and incitement to hatred of
the Armenian people, meaning that Article 137 of the Criminal Code of the
Netherlands was violated.

Written questions about the demonstration were submitted by Members of the
Dutch Parliament Mr. Pieter Omtzigt (CDA Christian Democratic Appeal), Mr.
Harry Van Bommel (SP Socialist Party), Mr. Joel Voordewind (CU Christian
Union), Mr. Kees van der Staaij (SGP Reformed Political Party) and Mr.
Raymond de Roon (PVV Party for Freedom) to the Minister of Foreign
Affairs, Minister of Social Affairs and Employment and Minister of Security
and Justice.

The questions included concerns about the organisation of the rally, which,
according to pamphlets distributed on the day, was in part organised by
Diyanet, ³The Presidency of Religious Affairs² of Turkey, which also offered
free transportation by bus to the demonstration.

There is an international consensus on the Armenian Genocide in academia.
The Dutch parliament unanimously recognised the Armenian Genocide in 2004
(Motion by Mr. Rouvoet).

Maybe they, these turks, like the word massacre better, feeling that these killings were just cold blooded indiscriminate slaughter.

Sometimes I wonder, there have through the years many massacres, at times only in one area of our homeland or another. We tend to concentrate on 1915-1925 because their intention was from the top down to the lowest rat, to murder all and steal everything.

Auntie Yester refered to them as: Wild People,          so true.

DUTCH STATE OF OVERIJSSEL RECOGNIZES THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

14:31 03.07.2014

Armenian Genocide, Netherlands

The Parliament of the Dutch province of Overijssel (The Provincial
Parliament of Overijssel) adopted at the meeting of 2 July 2014 a
motion which calls against the way in which Turkish organisations on 1
June 2014, have protested against the presence of an Armenian Genocide
memorial on private property of the Armenian church in Almelo. During
the rally insulting, threatening and hurtful statements were made
against Armenians, whereby the Genocide has been grossly denied.

The motion submitted by Christian Union (CU), the Reformed Political
Party (SGP), Party for Freedom (PVV) and Christian Democratic Appeal
(CDA) refers to the period of 1915-1918 when about 1.5 million people
(Armenians, Assyrians and Pontic Greeks) were brutally slaughtered
in the former Ottoman Empire.

The motion dissociates itself from the protest rally of genocide
deniers and expresses the recognition of the Armenian Genocide with
reference to the motion of the Dutch Parliament in 2004. The States
Provincial (the Provincial Parliament) makes also a signal to the
Armenian community that it has the right to a dignified memorial place.

In connection with the statements during the Turkish demonstration
on 1 June 2014, the Joint Armenian Organisations (FAON and Hay Tad)
have filed a complaint last week.

Netherlands prosecution demands punishment for inciting violence against Armenians

The court trial took place—on Friday, in Almelo, the Netherlands—against Ilham Askin, Chairman of the Turkish Azerbaijani Cultural Association in The Hague.

Askin is prosecuted for having chanted, “Karabakh will be the grave of the Armenians,” during a Turkish rally in Almelo. With this statement, according to the prosecutor, he has incited violence against and has insulted a group of people because of their Armenian origin.

On  June 1, 2014, a Turkish demonstration took place in Almelo, and against the Armenian Genocide memorial that was erected on the yard of the Armenian Apostolic Church in this city. The Armenian community, namely the Federation of Armenian Organisations in the Netherlands (FAON) and the Dutch Armenian Committee for Justice and Democracy (Hay Tad), had filed a police report against the statements made during this demonstration.

The court session in Almelo lasted for two hours. It was attended by many Armenians and Turks as well as Dutch, Armenian, and Turkish media. During the session a video clip of the demonstration was played, and which shows Askin chanting, “Karabakh will be the grave of the Armenians” several times, and a few thousand people repeating the chant.

Askin, who was assisted by attorney Plasman, answered questions by the court and the public prosecutor. He stated, however, that he does not consider his statements to be an offence. He said his expressions relate to a specific region where, due to the current situation, war will possibly break out and blood will be shed. He added that he has not done anything wrong. And when asked, he declared that he does not regret his statements.

The prosecutor extensively explained the process of examination of this case, and motioned for 80 hours of community service and a suspended imprisonment of two weeks with probation of two years, since a strong signal needs to be given. The prosecution’s motion also takes into consideration the fact that Ilham Askin did not show any insight into this case and that there is a danger of recidivism.

The court judgment is expected on March 17.

Ilhan Askin, chairman of the Turkish Azerbaijani Cultural Association in The Hague, has been sentenced to in the Netherlands for hate speech and inciting violence, for his “Karabakh will be Armenians’ grave” chants, the European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD) reports.

Askin has been sentenced to 120 hours of community service and a suspended imprisonment of four weeks with a probation period of two years.

Askin was prosecuted for having chanted “Karabakh will be the grave of the Armenians” during a Turkish rally in Almelo. With this statement, according to the prosecutor, he incited violence against and insulted a group of people because of their Armenian descent.

On 1 June 2014 a Turkish demonstration took place in Almelo, against the Genocide memorial erected in the churchyard of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the city.

The Armenian community, namely the Federation of Armenian Organizations in the Netherlands (FAON) and Dutch Armenian Committee for Justice and Democracy (Hay Tad) had filed a complaint against the statements made during that demonstration.

The court hearing on the case on March 3 lasted for two hours and was attended by many Armenians and Turks, as well as Dutch, Armenian and Turkish media. The video played during the session showed Mr. Askin chanting the words “Karabakh will be the grave of the Armenians” several times, and a crowd of a few thousand people repeating the slogan.

Mr. Askin stated that he doesn’t consider his statements an offence. He said that his expressions relate to a specific region, where due to the current situation war will possibly break out and blood will be shed. He believes that he has not done anything wrong. He declared he doesn’t regret his statements.

The Prosecutor extensively explained the process of examination of the case and demanded 80 hours of community service and a suspended imprisonment of two weeks with a probation period of two years, because it is necessary to give a strong message.

PanARMENIAN.Net - The Dutch Supreme Court has upheld judgments ruled by lower instances on the violent nature of an anti-Armenian statement by the chairman of the Turkish-Azerbaijani Cultural Association Ilhan Askin.

Armenia's ambassador to the Netherlands Tigran Balayan broke the new on Twitter Tuesday, April 14.

Back in 2014, Askin attended a rally against the opening of a memorial in Almelo in memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide and declared that "Karabakh will become the grave of the Armenians."

"This judgement is a result of dedicated fight of #Dutch-Armenians against manifestations of racism," Balayan said Tuesday.

"Dutch Court upheld its role as a true guarantor of tolerance and rule of law."

A Dutch court had earlier handed Askin a one-month conditional sentence and 120 hours of community service.
