Yes, G word concerns only small amount of A's but the N word reaches different and large number of A's

Nataline honored with fashion show
Event benefits Nataline Sarkisyan Foundation

CALABASAS, Calif. – On a warm midsummer afternoon, over 300 fashionistas gathered inside the showroom at the Mercedes Benz dealership in Calabasas, where the luxury car room had transformed into a den of fashion for the night.

The scene was replete with high style and attitude, as well-heeled slender girls, dressed in haute couture, strutted down the elongated catwalk and young men decked in the finest fabrics posed in front of cameras and enthusiastic onlookers.

The posh July 12 fashion show was staged by the Sarkisyan family – Koko, Hilda, and their son Bedig – to honor the memory of their daughter Nataline Sarkisyan, who suffered from leukemia. The girl, whose many passions included fashion, died seven months ago at age 17. Her death made national headlines because her insurance company had initially refused to authorize a liver transplant recommended by her physicians.

Armenian-Americans joined California nurses in protests outside the insurance company’s offices.

The Sarkisyan family was invited to join the presidential campaign trail of John Edwards to speak out about healthcare reform.

The blue-eyed, spirited Nataline dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. After graduating high school, she planned on attending the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in downtown Los Angeles. While in the hospital, she expressed a desire to organize a benefit fashion show.

Nataline’s wish came true this month, when the Sarkisyan family – with the support of over 30 volunteers and commercial sponsors – staged the fashion show in Calabasas, as a way to carry on Nataline’s legacy and a means to benefit the recently created Nataline Sarkisyan Foundation. The nonprofit will provide scholarships to cancer survivors who wish to pursue an education in fashion, culinary art, or medicine.

“This was Nataline’s dream,” the teary-eyed Hilda Sarkisyan told a room full of Nataline’s friends and supporters. “With your support, Nataline’s dream became a reality today.”

Later, when Hilda spoke with the Armenian Reporter, she said she felt her daughter’s presence throughout the event. “As I was speaking, I felt Nataline’s presence,” she explained. “There was an energy next to me, I know she was with us.” Hilda continued to convey the overwhelming emotion that seized her. “It was just incredible, standing there in front of so many people and witnessing the support. I had so many people come up to me, people I didn’t even know, wanting to offer help and telling me how they had been touched by Nataline’s story.”

Supporters included a woman whom Hilda had never met and who came to the event with a 14 karat gold and mother of pearl necklace, as a donation to be auctioned off during the fashion show.

Bedig Sarkisyan also showed his devotion. “I made her a promise in that room the last time I saw her and I am keeping that promise to keep her legacy alive,” he said. “Her birthday was two days ago and I don’t want it to be a sad occasion every year, I want to celebrate her life by doing something she loved.”

Those sentiments echoed throughout the brightly lit showroom, where techno music blared through the speakers and models, many of whom were Nataline’s friends, paraded down the catwalk, showing off clothes that were provided by Rumors, an upscale boutique in Sherman Oaks.
Hollyscoop Girls
The Hollyscoop Girls – Nora Gasparian, Diana Magpapian, Ani Esmailian – hosted the show. Photo: Hilma Shahinian for the Armenian Reporter.

The Hollyscoop Girls, best known for their online celebrity gossip page, hosted the event. Bedig works with the Hollyscoop Girls as their camera operator.

“We wanted to join in on this special occasion because Bedig is a part of the Hollyscoop family and this event holds a special place in our hearts,” Diana Magpapian said. The two other girls of the Hollyscoop trio, Nora Gasparian and Ani Esmailian, said that when Nataline was in the hospital and they asked Bedig what they should take her, Bedig would respond by saying, “Just bring her fashion magazines.”

When the Hollyscoop Girls visited Nataline at her home, they encouraged her to make sketches of her fashion ideas. After her death, Nataline’s mother found a sketchbook that had 22 drawings of clothing designs. Accordingly, the fashion show featured exactly 22 models.

Pol’ Atteu, a Beverly Hills fashion designer of Armenian descent (who recently designed the gown for Anna Nicole Smith’s funeral and published a book titled Anna Nicole Smith: Portrait of an Icon, Signature Edition, was asked to design an outfit, based on one of Nataline’s sketches, for the fashion show. Atteu agreed.

“As I flipped through the pages, the more emotional Hilda got, that was my signal to know what dress to pick,” Atteu said, describing the experience as deeply moving. “We went through a process and that one particular dress spoke to us. [Nataline] had a simple style, with a few details, that made it very unique to her. We took the concept of her simplicity and put a little kick to it.”

The fuchsia-pink cocktail dress, made with the finest fabric of duchess silk, was the last dress to be modeled during the fashion show, by Nataline’s friend, Thalia. When, after drifting down the catwalk, Thalia placed a rose on a vacant seat in the front row, symbolically reserved for Nataline, the audience stood up in honor of her memory.

A bevy of corporate sponsors including Monster Energy, Trader Joe’s, Nashville Wraps, and Coca Cola catered the event with fine foods and drinks. In addition, the FIDM provided leopard-print fashion-goody bags to all the guests attending the fashion show.
The Sarkisyan family continues to raise public awareness of the need for health-insurance reform. The family has been invited to Washington, San Francisco, and many other cities across America to speak about their experience. Next week Hilda and Koko will be going to Texas to join a panel organized by the progressive political website Daily Kos. Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgaldillo will also be on the panel.

Sometimes death is not such a bad outcome.

For me, given the choice between death and spending several more months in beds at hospitals with more chemo and injections and xrays, and MRIs and my family suffering etc etc etc ... I would definitely pick death.
