Artyom Sargsi Teryan ( March 5 , 1930 , Gandzak , Q121781823 ?, Azerbaijan SSR , AKPFSR , USSR - April 1970 , Baku , Azerbaijan SSR , USSR [1] ), Armenian Soviet wrestler, USSR champion in freestyle wrestling (1951 ) , classical ( five-time champion of the USSR in Greco-Roman style wrestling (1950-1954), world champion (1953), prize winner of the Olympic Games (1952). Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1953).
Biography
Artyom Teryan was born in 1930 in Gandzak , in the family of immigrants from Banants village. He lost his father at an early age, who died on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War . He started wrestling since 1945. At first, Teryan was interested in Armenian national wrestling , then he started practicing classical wrestling. His first coach was Andro Danielyan.
After finishing school, Artyom Teryan was admitted to the Institute of Physical Culture in Baku and moved to Baku . In 1950, for the first time, he won the title of lightweight champion of the classical style of wrestling of the USSR. In 1951, he became the USSR champion in both classical and freestyle wrestling.
In 1952, Teryan was included in the USSR wrestling team at the Helsinki Olympics and won the bronze medal of that competition. In 1953, he participated in the first world championship for Soviet classical wrestlers in Naples and became the winner of that tournament. In the final, he defeated the Hungarian Olympic champion Imre Hodosh.
Later, he competed in the light weight category. In 1955, after falling from a motorcycle , he broke his arm , had to end his sports career and started coaching in "Dynamo" sports company.
In April 1970, Artyom Teryan was killed on the household land.
