Rally Urges More Government Assistance for Syrian-Armenians Seeking to Relocate

Narek Alexanyan

16:32, July 19, 2012
Syrian-Armenians and their supporters rallied today in front of the Government Building in Yerevan calling for greater assistance on a national level to those Armenians fleeing Syria and wishing to relocate in Armenia.

Saying that they expected more from the Armenian government, the Syrian-Armenians pointed out that, on the contrary, they have encountered a number of obstacles.

A group calling itself the Hayazn Civic Organization claimed that the Armenian government has done precious little to facilitate the relocation of Syrian-Armenians in Armenia.

The organization also criticized Armavia Airlines for seeking to exploit the situation by hiking airline ticket prices on its Aleppo to Yerevan flights.

Hayazn representatives Armen Mkrtchyan and Davit Khosrovyan handed a letter to government officials voicing their concerns about the inadequacies of the government regarding the plight of Syrian-Armenians.

The protestors then marched to the Ministry of the Diaspora and the Foreign Ministry to voice their concerns.

One Syrian Armenian, Antranig Vartanian, told reporters at the scene that Armenia had an obligation not only to those seeking to relocate but to the Syrian Armenian community as a whole.

Xinhua.

Armenia’s national carrier uses Syrian unrest as opportunity to raise ticket prices – protest demonstration

July 25, 2012 | 16:26
YEREVAN. – A group of activists from Armenia’s civil initiatives held a protest Wednesday in front of Armavia Airline Company’s—which is Armenia’s national carrier—central office in the capital, Yerevan.

The demonstrators were protesting against Armavia’s increasing of the prices of the Aleppo-Yerevan and Yerevan-Aleppo flight tickets. They noted that taking advantage of such warlike situation and pursuing business interests is shamelessness.

“The Arab airlines likewise could have increased the ticket prices, but the price fluctuation there was small. Armenia has had very difficult days, and our compatriots of the Diaspora were along our side in those difficult days. Armavia is the sole organization in Armenia which reacted to the Syrian incidents and thought that it is a convenient time to raise the ticket prices and people will give their last cent to transfer their relatives to Armenia,” protester Apres Zohrabyan said, and stressed that Armavia raised the ticket prices virtually twice.

Another protester, Nvard Manasyan, stated that Armavia cannot be called Armenia’s national carrier because it is taking an anti-national step for the Armenians at this crucial moment.

The protesters were shouting “shame on you” in front of Armavia’s central office and making a call to no longer use the Company’s services.

And no one from Armavia Company approached the demonstrators. The latter hope the matter will not reach the dimension of a nationwide boycott and Armavia will review its price policy.

Syrian Armenians fleeing country amid violence
Posted ImageJuly 26, 2012 - 18:01 AMTPanARMENIAN.Net - As fighting is raging in major Syrian cities refugees have streamed across the border in the thousands, settling with relatives wherever possible, Gulfnews said.

Syrian Armenians are among those who are fleeing, and many who can afford to move back to Armenia are doing so.

But the vast majority are settling with relatives in Lebanon until the situation back home returns to normalcy.

Lina, a middle-aged woman who fled with her children, speaks of the horrors she left behind in Aleppo. “Shabiha came and beat up businessmen who closed their shops in Aleppo,” she said. Shabiha, are pro-government militias with a notorious reputation for savagery.

“Some were beaten so badly they had to be hospitalised,” she added.

Her young son witnessed a bombing in the Syrian capital and was severely tramautised by the experience. “He sobbed uncontrollably for two days,” she said. But her son is among the many Syrian children exposed to such brutality and devastation. Many children, Lina says, are displaying aggressive behaviour and will be pyschologically affected for the rest of their lives.

While Lina and her children are safe in Beirut for the time being, she remains nervous. “I fear for my community’s long-term survival,” she said speaking about Armenians in Syria. She is among many minorities in Syria who fear that the collapse of the regime will adversely affect their respective communities. Many minorities still believe the Baath regime protects them.

Lina is particularly grateful that the regime opened its doors to the Armenian survivors of the 1915 Genocide at the hands of the Turks. “We remain loyal to the country, and I cannot wait to go home,” she said.

Alleppo’s Armenian districts calm, residents readying for war
Posted ImagePosted ImageJuly 28, 2012 - 13:52 AMTPanARMENIAN.Net - The situation in Aleppo’s Armenian districts has been calm so far, Aleppo-based Facebook users say.

Armenian districts’ residents are storing non-perishable food products; interruptions with breads supplies have been noted over the lack of workforce.

The district residents were advised to store water, fire extinguishers, and find out beforehand the location of basements to hide in the event of shelling.

On the whole, the situation in Armenian districts has been calm. However, people are apprehensive; with Assad loyalists and rebel forces fighting in Aleppo, the attacks might reach Armenian districts in the days to come.

Syrian military helicopters pounded a central district of Aleppo on Saturday, July 28, as forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad prepared for an onslaught on rebel fighters that could determine the fate of the country's biggest city, opposition sources said, according to Reuters.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition group which collects information on the uprising against Assad that has gripped Syria for the past 16 months, reported helicopter attacks on the central Salaheddine district of Aleppo and violent clashes elsewhere in the city.

"Helicopters are participating in clashes at the entrance of Salaheddine district and bombarding it," the group said in an emailed statement. "There are also violent clashes at the entrances to Sakhour district."

The battle for the city of 2.5 million people is seen as a crucial test for a government that has committed major military resources to retaining control of its two main power centers, Aleppo and Damascus, in the face of a growing insurgency.

Russia won’t join EU sanctions against Syria – official
Posted ImageJuly 28, 2012 - 17:23 AMTPanARMENIAN.Net - Russia will not participate in the EU sanctions against Syria and will not allow the inspection of ships sailing under its flag, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Saturday, July 28, RIA Novosti said.

“We have no intention to take part in any measures in pursuit of the EU decisions aimed against Syria,” he said, adding that “we will not agree to the inspection of ships sailing under the Russian flag or the use of any other restriction measures against them.”

Russia totally “rejects unilateral sanctions against Syria,” he said.

The European Union approved a new set of sanctions against Syria on Monday, including a tougher arms embargo, in response to the escalating violence in the country.

Foreign ministers of the 27 EU member states agreed to authorize searches of airplanes and ships in EU territorial waters and airspace if they are suspected of carrying arms and other equipment to Syria which could be used by Damascus to crack down on the opposition. The measure reinforces an EU ban on arms deliveries to Syria imposed last May.

The EU ministers also decided to extend the existing EU blacklist of 129 people and 49 companies with links to the Syrian government.

The new measures constituted the 17th round of EU sanctions imposed on Syria since the beginning of an uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in March 2011.

The new sanctions came as Syrian government troops have continued their large-scale offensive to force rebels out of Damascus and the northern city of Aleppo. Dozens of people were reported killed and thousands have fled their homes in Syria over the past few days.

Up to 17,000 people have been killed in clashes between Assad troops and opposition fighters since the beginning of the Syrian conflict 17 months ago, according to UN estimates based on accounts provided by Syrian activists.

The UN Refugee Agency said last week that the number of Syrian refugees it has registered or assisted in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey has almost tripled since April to 112,000. The actual number of Syrian refugees is thought to be significantly higher.
