ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Armenian parliament voted to formally recognize and condemn the Yezidi genocide committed by ISIS.

Member of parliament Rustam Makhmudyan, a Yezidi who introduced the resolution on Tuesday, urged lawmakers to not just condemn the genocide committed, but to, through international agencies, investigate crimes committed against the religious minority and pursue perpetrators.

The resolution was supported by four factions in the Armenian legislature and passed with 91 votes for and one abstention.

Nadia Murad, Yezidi survivor, activist and UN Goodwill Ambassador thanked Armenia and Makhmudyan for the support.

“I am touched by today’s decision and I would like to express my gratitude to the people of Armenia and their representatives in Parliament. Acknowledgement of the Genocide means a lot to me and all the victims of genocide,” she said.

The recognition from Armenia is particularly poignant for the Yezidi community because Armenians themselves were the victims of genocide a century earlier. Yezidi advocacy group Yazda described the decision as a "historic moment for the entire Yezidi community worldwide and for victims of this genocide."

The Yezidi genocide has been recognized by the, KRG, European Parliament, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, France, Scotland, and Iraq as well as a United Nations independent inquiry.

According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the KRG, some 360,000 Yezidis were displaced and approximately 100,000 fled abroad when their cities and towns were taken over by ISIS in August 2014.

Of the 6,417 Yezidis captured by ISIS when they attacked Shingal, just over half have been rescued. Thousands more were killed.

The parliament of Armenia officially acknowledged the genocide of Yazidis in 2014 by Sunni Islamists belonging to ISIS (Islamic State – IS) and other Takfiri Islamist groups. It is hoped that other parliaments throughout the world will also pass similar resolutions because the atrocities and mass graves are well documented.

Armen Ashotyan, a politician from the ruling party in Armenia, said, “As a nation that has lived through genocide, the Armenian people understand the significance of this recognition.”

Armenia is overwhelmingly Christian and this ethnic group knows all about genocide at the hands of mainly Sunni Muslims. This applies to the 1915 genocide whereby other Christian ethnic groups were also butchered in enormous numbers. Of course, pogroms took place against Christian Armenians and others prior to the 1915 genocide, and also followed, but the massacres of millions of innocents in 1915 remains etched within the soul of all Armenians.

Hence, for Yazidis, the events of 2014 need greater recognition. Likewise, scattered communities inside Iraq – and co-religionists who have fled to many nations – need continuing international support. Equally important, Sunni Islamists responsible for butchering, raping, torturing, and kidnapping Yazidis must be held accountable. Increased international urgency is also needed in freeing Yazidi slaves because several thousand remain unaccounted for.

It is also incumbent on helping Yazidis to return to the fold after being forcibly converted to Sunni Islam. If not, then these Yazidis will remain trapped by the fear that made them convert – or, if converted when little children, then they will remain psychologically traumatized until passing away from this world.

The parliament of Armenia said, the nation recognizes and strongly condemns the genocide of the Yazidi people perpetrated by terrorist groups in 2014 in Iraqi territory controlled by them.”

By recognizing Yazidi Genocide, Armenia showed its support to the
brotherly people on state level

YEREVAN, JANUARY 16, ARMENPRESS. By recognizing and condemning the
Yazidi Genocide, the Armenian Parliament called on the international
community to not forget genocides and create mechanisms of eliminating
them, Said Avdalyan, president of Armenia’s Young Yazidi Association
told a press conference.

“Indeed, this is a historic event that the Armenian Parliament
unanimously with 4 factions recognized the Yazidi genocide. The
Armenian people are globally acting as the flagman of genocide
condemnation and international recognition process. And today, Armenia
showed on a state level that it is standing next to its brotherly
people – the Yazidis”, he said.

The Yazidis themselves have numerously proved their devotion to
Armenia and Artsakh, both during the years of the first World War, the
May Battles and the April Four Day War.

On January 16, the Armenian Parliament recognized the Yazidi genocide
which was committed by terrorist organizations in Iraq.
