Let’s begin with Beshiktashlian’s ? Եկ իմ սրինգ/Come my flute” that was put to music by whom?
I thought I had it somewhere, I can’t find it. Here is how much I remember. Does anyone have the full text?
Come my flute, my heartfelt friend (my sweetheart),
Place your thin lips on to my lips,
We’ll sing and cry,
We’ll weep and sing in sorow….

---
Hi Nairi, smile.gif
You posted this from Isahakian somewhere else smile.gif
Badalian immortalized it in a song
----

And, now that we have sttled down, we will add Avetik's other Lament.
BTW. The Armenian name of the furkish "alagyaz" is ArakGats/
"Dark and black clouds shrouding your front(forehead)...You're clad in smoke(/fog/smog), my Arakats, Sun will never shine in my heart, Smoke has also too filled it "

**Զառ փեշերդ, Your Golden skirt, ԶաՌ, ոսկէ, ոսկեթել” as opposed to ԶաՐ, զարկ, զարնել, hit/strike. From the Persian ZAR, gold, as in ZIRANI, GOLDEN, ԾԻՐԱՆԻ

How can we forget…
“Our Fatherland, wretched/poor, and orphaned/ownerless”?? **
**Ownerless? Wait a few more years of emigration and see who the "owners" will be.

Reminds me of Petros' words-
In reverse. We have so many "լացող", but where is the "կեանք"?
Let us continue with our all time favorite
TEARS (lament)of ARAKS.
Whose tears are we talking about? Who can tell the difference of furkish and Armenian tears? Which is more bitter, salty?
---

let's go back to another lamentatious favorite of ours, as far as Avarayr and the see the "lament"
Thank you SAS.
===

For those who cannot see the Armenian text, here it is in Uni; with some poetic and textual corrections.

Nairi, do you know what "thanatology" means? Serach an see.
In the Greek, "thanatos' means "death" and "anathas" means immortal, just as Anastas Mikoyan.

Haha! Sorry, I missed this topic, so I replied to the yeghanak one first.

I posted this there:

"But first explain this to me. What the heck is a Okay, okay, we can discuss that when you open a new topic."

There you have it: women who are hired to cry, for instance at a funeral or in dying person's home. Apparently Persians do this too. How much more lamenting can we get as a culture?

Here's one you posted a while back:

http://hyeforum.com/...t...st&p=237007

How about the title itself: տրտունջ(ք). Later in the poem he talks about հառաչ and լացող, and of course the famous line that I quoted later: Կըլլան մարդիկ, որ լացող մը չունին!! There are people that do not have designated/hired criers!

Other words I regularly come across that are related to sorrow, grief, and lamentation are:

Remember how Jack Kerouac depicted the only Armenian in his novel On The Road? "A melancholy Armenian youth." And the man was influenced by Saroyan. That's right, Saroyan, who will be turning 100 this year and whose father apparently kept a journal when he was in New York: "In New York, according to this journal," Saroyan writes, "my father had only two moods: sad and very sad."

Mourning was, maybe even now a profession, usually women clad in black will weep and mourn at a funeral.
Remember that scene in Zorba the Greek when those "old crows" had gathered, waiting for her to croak so they could divide the loot, when suddenly she woke up?

I am sure you have seen pictures of funeral processions in souther USA, particulary in the Black American culture where they play jazz and dance. I recently saw a docu about an African tribe who, after mourning and weeping at a funeral will brek in song and dance. You may have also heard some eulogists say "We are here, not to mourn the death but to celebrate the life....". See Marc Antoni's eulogy at Julius' funeral- "I am here not bury Julius, but..."

The evil that men do lives after them,
The good is oft interred with their bones,
So let it be with Caesar ..."

Which gets me thinking... I mean, I understand and respect sadness when someone passes away, but what I don't understand is the artificial crying part of it. The fact that in our cultures (I know the Persians have it too) someone is hired to artificially cry, supposedly to make the funeral seem sadder, that I don't get. Or even when no one is hired, the women of the family, especially, will weep so loudly that it just sounds fake. I remember hearing my grandmother literally wail at my grandfather's and uncle's funeral. I'm not saying she wasn't in pain, but her wailing seemed over the top, and I know she did that because of cultural habits and not because she's unable to express her sadness in a more natural and modest way.

Thanks for sharing. I must say that some of the best lamentations, those that truly touched me and made me shed a tear, despite my cynicism towards them, were written by Middle-Easteners.
