Novate.ru: Old Julfa khachkars in 5 Major Vandalized Masterpieces list
Novate.ru: Old Julfa khachkars in 5 Major Vandalized Masterpieces list
March 3, 2014 - 15:14 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - Novate.ru Russian website released a list of 5 Major Masterpieces Vandalized in the 21th Century, which included ancient Armenian khachkars in Nakhichevan’s Old Jugha (Julfa) demolished by Azeris.

According to the release, “for a long time, Armenians constituted a major part of the population of Nakhijevan region (now a part of Azerbaijan). Yet, in early 3rd millennium, mere wrecks of Armenian architecture reminded of their presence, with the cemetery in Julfa as the largest one.

“By the end of the 20th century, over 2000 khachkars have been preserved in the cemetery. The fist attempt at their destruction came in 1998, to be thwarted by the international community’s harsh response. Another act of vandalism was perpetrated in 2002, with the “Armenian issue” finalized in 2005, which saw the cemetery cleared of khachkars to make room for shooting grounds. Meanwhile, Baku continues denying the fact of the vandalism, as well as Armenian history of Nakhijevan, despite significant body of evidence,” the publication said.

SYDNEY TO HOST LECTURE ON DESTROYED KHACHKARS OF NAKHICHEVAN

July 9, 2014 - 18:23 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - Sydney will host a lecture on destroyedkhachkars of
Nakhichevan Friday, July 11, Armenian National Committee of Australia
reported.

The 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide Commemorative Committee
(100th AGCC) announced a lecture evening with special guest, Dr.

Judith Crispin.

Crispin is a Director at Manning Clark House (MCH), a noted and
respected Australian 'think tank' based in Canberra, named after the
leading historian, Manning Clark.

In November 2013, MCH began working on a ground-breaking project
to digitally recreate the ancient Armenian cemetery at Djulfa. The
Djulfa cemetery, which is located in the border area between Iran and
Nakhichevan, was once home to more than 10,000 khachkars, traditional
Armenian cross-stones, which dated back to the 15th century.

In 2005, the military of Azerbaijan began a systematic campaign
to finally rid the Julfa cemetery of all the Armenian khachkars
by conducting destroying operations in the area. The international
community condemned these attacks, however the cemetery could not
be salvaged.

A document submitted by an international parliamentary delegation to
UNSECO noted that "given the impossibility of any reconstruction of the
destroyed site and its khachkars - now literally pulverised - and in
consideration of the fact that under the surface there are still the
buried bodies of people to whose memory the former khachkars had been
erected, we suggest to transform this gross act of out-spoken hatred
into a positive step towards confidence-building and reconciliation."

Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of Australia,
Vache Kahramanian, stated: "We are delighted that Manning Clark House
has undertaken this remarkable project. As a partner on this project,
ANC Australia looks forward to working with Dr. Crispin and her team
to make this project a success."

Crispin will provide graphic evidence from her recent trip to the
region, and advise specific details of MCH's recreation project.

ARTSAKH (KARABAKH) AND DESTRUCTION OF CROSS-STONES OF OLD JUGHA BY AZERBAIJAN ARE MENTIONED IN THE NATIONAL REPORT OF ARMENIA IN UNESCO

by Karina Manukyan

Tuesday, December 2, 17:25

Artsakh (Karabakh) and destruction of cross-stones of Old Jugha by
Azerbaijan are mentioned in the National report of Armenia in UNESCO.

This made the Azerbaijani and Turkish sides very much sad.

As Secretary General of Armenia's National Commission for UNESCO
Vahram Kajoyan said at today's press-conference, earlier the art of
cross-stone and the music of duduk were involved in the UNESCO List
of Intangible Cultural Heritage, these two elements were reflected
in the National Report of Armenia.

In particular, the report says about duduk concerts and festivals
in different countries of the world, including Karabakh. As for the
cross-stones, the Azerbaijani party ruined more than 2 000 cross-stones
of Old Jugha in 2005.

This information in the report has stirred up Azerbaijan and Turkey.

In particular, the Turkish party offered to hold several voting
on the Armenian report and make changes in the report. However, as
Kajoyan said, the Turkish delegation to UNESCO failed as none of its
proposals were accepted.

COLORADO GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS DECEMBER 6 AS DJULFA COMMEMORATION DAY

2 days ago 07/12/15

Governor Hickenlooper at April 24, 2015 unveiling of Colorado State
Capitol Khachkar (Photos by Kevo Hedeshian)

DENVER, Colo.-In an official proclamation, Colorado Governor John
Hickenlooper declared December 6, 2015 as the 10th Anniversary of
Djulfa Destruction - joining global commemorations of Azerbaijan's
genocidal destruction of 2,000 Djulfa (Jugha) khachkars, reported
Armenian National Committee of America - Western Region.

Gov. Hickenlooper's proclamation memorializes "the deliberate
destruction of the world's largest collection of medieval khachkars
at Djulfa; [which] has been documented by the American Association
for the Advancement of Science." The proclamation further mentions
that "the State of Colorado commemorated the 100th anniversary of the
Armenian Genocide this year by unveiling a Capitol khachkar memorial,
a replica of one of Djulfa's 2,000 destroyed monuments" and that
"Coloradans are encouraged to visit the State Capitol and view the
replica Djulfa khachkar."

"Colorado once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to human
rights," remarked ANCA WR Executive Director Elen Asatryan. "Governor
Hickenlooper's authorization and unveiling of the Colorado State
Capitol Khachkar on April 24 was a staunch expression of support
to the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide as well as
an unprecedented tangible action to restore a piece of medieval
Armenian culture lost in a genocidal destruction. We are so proud that
Colorado's Armenian community has become such a vibrant voice in their
state's democratic process and are grateful to Governor Hickenlooper
for his strong leadership and commitment to issues important to our
community and human rights advocates worldwide."

The Proclamation will be read by Colorado's Douglas County Public
Defender and Djulfa descendant Ara Ohanian later today at the
Shine a Light on All Genocides candlelight vigil and program in
Denver, organized by Armenians of Colorado (AOC) in partnership with
ANCA-Colorado, the Colorado Coalition for Genocide Awareness & Action,
and the Consulate General of Armenia in Los Angeles.

December 2015 marks the 10th anniversary of Turkic Azerbaijan's
genocidal destruction of 2,000 medieval khachkars, when the army
of Azerbaijan utilized heavy technology to conduct an operation
against helpless cultural monuments. Despite the fact that the
destruction was caught on tape and further documented with satellite
evidence, Azerbaijan continues to deny the existence of and the
destruction of Djulfa. The destruction of Djulfa was the final step
of carefully-planned and executed wipeout of Nakhichevan's indigenous
Christian heritage in line with official historiography in Azerbaijan
that claims Armenians did not live in that region until the 19th
century. This is often seen as a continuation of Turkey's pan-Turkic
genocidal policy against indigenous Armenians, which started with
discrimination then organized massacres and ethnic cleansing, followed
by denial and destruction of physical evidence, and is one of the
reasons why the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh) has argued that
any rule by Azerbaijan over it would be tantamount to genocide. For
more information on the Djulfa destruction, visit www.djulfa.com.

The Armenian National Committee of America-Western Region is the
largest and most influential Armenian American grassroots advocacy
organization in the Western United States. Working in coordination with
a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout the Western
United States and affiliated organizations around the country, the
ANCA-WR advances the concerns of the Armenian American community on a
broad range of issues. For more information, visit www.ancawr.org. ###
The complete text of the proclamation is presented below:

State of Colorado Proclamation WHEREAS, December 2015 marks the 10th
anniversary of the deliberate destruction of the world's largest
collection of medieval khachkars at Djulfa; and

WHEREAS, this destruction has been documented by the American
Association for the Advancement of Science; and

WHEREAS, the State of Colorado commemorated the 100th anniversary
of the Armenian Genocide this year by unveiling a Capitol khachkar
memorial, a replica of one of Djulfa's 2,000 destroyed monuments; and

WHEREAS, Coloradans highly value cultural preservation and tolerance;
and

WHERESA, deliberate targeting of cultural monuments continues to pose
a threat to our global heritage; and

WHEREAS, Coloradans are encouraged to visit the State Capitol and
view the replica Djulfa khachkar;

Therefore, I, John W. Hickenlooper, Governor of the entire State of
Colorado, do hereby proclaim, forever after, December 6, 2015 as THE
10TH ANNIVERSARY OF DJULFA DESTRUCTION DAY in the State of Colorado.

GIVEN under my hand and the Executive Seal of the State of Colorado,
this sixth day of December, 2015

TODAY MARKS 10 YEARS SINCE DESTRUCTION OF ARMENIAN CULTURAL HERITAGE IN NAKICEVAN

19:08 â~@¢ 15.12.15

Ten years ago today, the Azerbaijani authorities destroyed the
Armenian monuments on the territory of Nakicevan and the Armenian
cemetery of Jugha.

In the unprecedented act of vandalism, thousands of Armenian khachkars
(cross-stones) were leveled down with the help of heavy equipment.

The desecration of the monuments began back in 2003 and continued
through 2006 onwards, reaching its end only in 2006.

Speaking to Tert.am, Samvel Karapetyan, a monument expert studying
samples of Armenian architecture in and outside of Armenia, described
Azerbaijan's vandalism as an act encouraged first of all by Turkey,
the country traditionally considered its more powerful brother.

"The ancient site of international significance does not exist for ten
years, so we are not able to do anything to return [it]. But we can,
of course, raise the world's awareness of the crime committed. To rule
out such brutalities, that country must be condemned and punished.

Otherwise, such incidents will always repeat themselves. And they do;
while we are talking now, the Azerbaijanis are destroying [more
monuments]. That's also because their 'elder brother', Turkey, wasn't
punished for that."

International reaction to Azerbaijan's vandalism from European
Commission to UNESCO

Azerbaijan's vandalism received an international reaction by such
authoritative institutions as the European Commission, the
Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and even the
Holy See of Vatican and the Greek Orthodox Church's Synod, as well as
the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

World-renowned scholars and politicians also voiced their criticism
over the act of desecration.

On February 16, 2006 the European Parliament adopted a resolution
condemning the destruction of a medieval cemetery in Jugha, as well as
the historical monument on Azerbaijan's territory and demanding that
the European Parliament representatives be allowed to visit the
country.

The question is raised at almost every session of the PACE. A European
parliamentarian has once even proposed organizing a visit to Jugha,
but Azerbaijan strongly rejected the idea.

In comments to Tert.am, Naira Zohrabyan, a member of the Armenian
delegation to the PACE, recalled the screening of the movie "20th
Century Vandals" at a joint session of the EU-Armenia Parliamentary
Cooperation Committee. The Armenian parliamentarian, who then headed
the Committee, remembered the strong reaction to the move.

"And it was unprecedented, as we managed to break the Azerbaijani
lobbyist resistance to organizing the screening. Of course, numerous
notes of protest by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry followed, but we
believe we did manage to attract European organizations' attention to
the problem," she noted.

Different international scholars, joined by US senators, so-signed a
letter to the UNESCO and other international bodies, condemning
Azerbaijan's aggression. Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky, the director
of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, described the violence as
an act tantamount to a crime. A British member of the European
Parliament, Charles Tennock, compared it with Taliban's move to
destroy the monument of Buddah.

Adam Smith, an anthropology professor at the Chicago University,
condemned the vandalism as "a shameful episode in humanity's relation
to its past, a deplorable act on the part of the government of
Azerbaijan which requires both explanation and repair."

In 2010, a cross-stone park with 20 replicas of the vandalized
khachkars opened near the Church of Holy Savior of All in Gyumri,
Armenia's second largest city.

TODAY MARKS 10 YEARS SINCE AZERBAIJAN'S DEMOLITION OF ARMENIAN CEMETERY IN DJULFA - VIDEO

Today is the 10th anniversary of Azerbaijan's demolition of the

Religious vandalism in Azerbaijan

by MARTIN DEMOORJIAN

December 6, 2015 marked the 10th anniversary of Azerbaijan's army
destroying 2,000 Armenian cemetery gravestone crosses known as khach-kars,
in Djulfa, Nakhichevan. The cemetery originally had 10,000 intricate
khach-kars, an example of which is displayed at the United Nations New York
headquarters and in front of many Armenian churches including one in
Framingham.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) reported
that Azerbaijani authorities completed a decades-long campaign to remove
all traces of the ancient Armenian presence in the Caucasus that dates back
millennia and where some of the world's oldest artifacts have been
discovered. Using satellite imagery, the AAAS confirmed Azerbaijan's
carefully-planned and executed state-sponsored eradication of these
landmarks of Armenian civilization, an indigenous Christian population.

Azerbaijan denies the existence and destruction of Djulfa although such is
recorded on tape and documented with satellite evidence. Having been
established in 1918, Azerbaijan claims that Armenians did not live in that
region until the 19th century and manufactures its own narrative.

Destruction of the cemetery had started in 1998. That is when UNESCO called
on the Azerbaijani authorities to stop, yet Aliyev's regime resumed the
obliteration in 2002. In December 2005, Azerbaijan's military completed
destroying the remaining ancient cemetery. With impunity Azerbaijan's
military razed the site and replaced it with a shooting range, desecrating
a Christian Armenian cemetery for which the Ilham Aliyev regime is
responsible and has escaped any accountability.

Following a worldwide outcry in February 2006, the European Parliament
adopted a resolution condemning destruction of the khach-kars. The
resolution also called on Azerbaijan to allow a delegation of European
Parliament Members to visit the archaeological site at Djulfa. The Aliyev
regime banned the European delegation from visiting the historic site. This
ban still exists as officials from the United States, Europe, and other
countries are denied access to the site.

The parallels between Azerbaijan's destruction of Christian monuments and
the Taliban's destruction of 5,000-year-old Buddhist statuary is
undeniable, but the difference in reactions is striking. This may be
explained by the Azeri government paying influence peddlers to cover up
their crimes. While such destruction can be likened to a recent situation
in Iraq where the Islamic State destroyed the 1,400-years-old St. Elijah's
monastery, Iraq's oldest Christian monastery.

This brings to point the case of Ramil Safarov, the Azeri soldier who
killed an Armenian soldier during 2004 military exercises in Hungary. After
imprisonment in Hungary, he was extradited to Azerbaijan where he was to
finish his prison sentence but was quickly absolved of his crime and made a
hero; something like the spy Jonathan Pollard's release, who is regarded a
hero by some. Reportedly, Azerbaijan gave Hungary needed money, $2 billion,
for the release of Mr. Safarov. It is curious what Mr. Pollard may be worth
by whom and to whom if there was any payment. Such people are wanted
because they know something others deem valuable and raises question of
trustworthiness.

Azerbaijan's leader, Ilham Aliyev, is determined to annihilate his
Armenian
neighbors and is sold weapons by Israel and Russia that exacerbates the
situation between the two and peace in the Caucasus as there have been more
border attacks that disregard a ceasefire, and unlike attacks in the
Mideast do not make U.S. news. Regrettably, it might be said the friend of
an enemy is an enemy.

Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and Turkey's President
Recep Tayyip
Erdogan make no secret of their desire to destroy Armenia, like Iran to
Israel, and with a priority to eliminate the Armenian lobby in the United
States.

PanARMENIAN.Net - A scandalous incident occurred during the Open European Kung fu Championship, currently underway in Ukraine's Lviv, Ermenihaber.am reports.

As a Karabakh sportsman, Davit Petrosyan was about to score victory against his Azerbaijani rival, the latter's cornerman attempted to beat the Armenian athlete. Also joining the provocation was the Azeri trainer who hit Petrosyan from the back. The Azerbaijani trainer and sportsmen then attacked the members of the Armenian national team with clubs.

The Azerbaijani team seemed to have planned the attack, having brought the clubs to the tournament in advance. In their hysteria, the Azeris even hit the President of the European Kung Fu Federation, Nikolay Matulyovsky, who tried to defend the Karabakh athlete.

Police officers intervened in the turmoil and brawl and disciplined the Azeri provokers.

The Azerbaijani team was ultimately disqualified.

The attacked Karabakh sportsman is the brother of soldier Marat Petrosyan who destroyed 5 tanks and 1 infantry fighting vehicle during the 4-day war in early April.

In another fight, Armenian sportsman Ashot Harutyunyan defeated another member of Azerbaijan's team.

Expert: Armenia should achieve international condemnation of
Azerbaijani vandalism

18:46, 27.05.2016

YEREVAN. - No issue of Nakhijevan exists in the state policy of
Armenia, Honored Culture Worker of Armenia, Argam Ayvazyan, stated
Friday.

In his words, at the initial stage of Karabakh movement, the issue of
Nakhijevan was discussed, but following that it became of no
importance to the Armenian authorities. Over 27,000 Armenian monuments
were destroyed in Nakhijevan, the Armeniologist noted. “Armenia has
never been consistent at the international level, not being able to
achieve condemnation of that vandalism by Azerbaijan,” Ayvazyan said.

Azerbaijan Continues to Deny Destruction of Religious, Cultural Heritage of Armenians
08/12/16
DjulfaCemeteryDestructionTimeline1.jpg

Djulfa cemetery destruction timeline

OTTAWA, Canada—The Armenian National Committee of Canada (ANCC) is marking the 11th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s destruction of the historic Armenian cemetery of Djulfa by calling on the Canadian government to hold Azerbaijan accountable for the systematic destruction of Armenian historical, cultural and religious sites and monuments.

On December 10, 2005, the government of Azerbaijan began the final demolition of the historic Armenian cemetery in Djulfa, an ancient Armenian city now located in Azerbaijan. This marked the final blow to the 10,000 intricately hand carved khachkars (cross stones) which were erected between the 6th-17th centuries. Khachkars are a uniquely Armenian form of stone carving which UNESCO has recognized as being both culturally and religiously significant to the Armenian people and constitutes as part of humanity’s shared intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent safeguarding.

By December 15, 2005, the final destruction was complete. Approximately 200 Azerbaijani soldiers gathered at the Nakhichevan-Iran border to desecrate the remaining grave markers at the Djulfa Armenian cemetery. The cemetery has since been replaced with an Azerbaijani military training base.

Despite clear evidence and condemnation by international bodies such as the European Parliament and International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Azerbaijani authorities continue to deny this crime, while still promoting the destruction of all Armenian religious and cultural sites in the country.

Shahen Mirakian, President of the ANCC stated “The Armenian monuments represent unique architectural value and the international community should be aware of the policy of their destruction that can only be defined as cultural genocide”

Mirakian called on the Canadian government to exert the necessary pressure on the Azerbaijani government to end this campaign. “The annihilation of the civilization of a people is incompatible with any country aspiring to become an honest broker for peace, justice and equality around the world. Azerbaijan cannot be regarded as such, until it faces its own history, and respects the rights and freedoms of other nations” said Mirakian.

The ANCC is the largest and the most influential Canadian-Armenian grassroots human rights organization. Working in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters throughout Canada and affiliated organizations around the world, the ANCC actively advances the concerns of the Canadian-Armenian community on a broad range of issues and works to eliminate abuses of human rights throughout Canada and the world.

Today Marks 11th Anniversary of Destruction of 2,000 Djulfa Khachkars
16/12/16

December 16 marks the 11th anniversary of destruction of 2,000 Djulfa khachkars

On the 11th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s unpunished destruction of the world’s largest medieval Armenian cemetery, the Djulfa Virtual Memorial and Museum commends ongoing initiatives to rebuild the 2,000 sacred cross-stones (khachkars) of Djulfa and calls for measures to prevent similar acts of cultural genocide in Artsakh.

Armenian communities and their supporters around the world have responded to the December 2005 destruction of Djulfa by erecting dozens of replica khachkars in many corners of the world, including on the prominent grounds of the Colorado State Capitol in the United States of America.

A groundbreaking project to recreate the entire cemetery through holographic technology is being pursued by the Australian Catholic University, albeit it is scheduled to discontinue in 2017 due to unmet fundraiser goals.

Reactions to Djulfa’s destruction have also contributed to the development of satellite archaeology. The first American Association for the Advancement of Science remote investigation of a human rights violation case that concerned cultural monuments was that of Djulfa, conducted in late 2009. This approach is widely used today for preventive and documentary monitoring of cultural properties threatened by ISIL and other terrorist organizations.

The eleventh anniversary of Djulfa’s destruction is also a cause for grave concern regarding the vast medieval Armenian heritage in Artsakh – the unrecognized Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh. Its hundreds of medieval churches and other Christian monuments would likely be targeted for total destruction should Azerbaijan gain control – through force or negotiation – any of the Artsakh regions that were outside the Soviet boundaries of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast.

Azerbaijan’s April 2016 Four Day War against Artsakh, during which Azeri forces beheaded captured Armenian soldiers and mutilated elderly civilians in Talish, demonstrated yet again the oil-rich dictatorship’s determination to ethnically cleanse indigenous Christian communities in the Caucasus. Therefore, we call on the twin states of the Armenian homeland – Armenia and Artsakh, international bodies, as well as academic communities around the world to take proactive measures to protect the vast medieval Armenian heritage of Artsakh.

Founded in 2007, the Djulfa Virtual Memorial and Museum (www.Djulfa.com) documents the intentional destruction of the largest medieval Armenian cemetery at Djulfa (Old Jugha, Culfa) in the exclave of Nakhichevan (Naxçıvan), Republic of Azerbaijan. For more information, visit Djulfa.com and FB.com/SilencedStones.

The video compilation below are satellite images of a vandalized medieval cemetery at the Iranian-Azerbaijani border called “The New Tears of Araxes” and produced by Simon Maghakyan.

Expert warns of troops accumulation in Azerbaijani Nakhichevan

YEREVAN, August 30. /ARKA/. Azerbaijan has substantially built up its military presence in its landlocked exclave of Nakhichevan, Karen Veranyan, an expert at Noravank research and educational foundation, told a news conference today.

"The Nakhichevan issue is always pertinent in the context of Armenia's national security. Now this region is going through a period of serious militarization, an active accumulation of weapons and military hardware,' Veranyan said.

According to him, Azerbaijan has stepped up its military presence in the autonomy by having sent there
new air defense systems, as well as rockets and artillery, including Russian-manufactured Smerch, Turkish-manufactured T-300 Kasirga, and T-122 Sakarya multiple-launch rocket systems and is conducting annual joint military exercises with Turkey.

According to some sources, at present, Azerbaijan has about 20,000 soldiers based in Nakhichevan (out of an estimated 67,000 total active duty troops), and around 400 armored vehicles, aircraft, air defense and artillery systems.

"Recently,  two SU-25 Grach fighters made demonstrative flights along the border with Armenia  and in view of the autonomy's border proximity  to Yerevan (only 60 km), this circumstance makes Armenia  think about strengthening the defense capability of the country," the expert said.

The expert noted however, that Armenia is taking all necessary, effective and symmetrical steps to ensure its security.

"Recently, we signed a number of agreements with Russia, for example, a ratified agreement on a joint air defense system, which is a serious step in maintaining regional stability in general, as well as the treaty on the creation of a joint group of troops," he concluded.

The historic Armenian region of Nakhichevan is currently part of Azerbaijan. In the early 20s of the XX century, together with Nagorno-Karabakh it was handed to Azerbaijan by Bolsheviks. Nakhichevan is separated from the rest of Azerbaijan by Meghri region in southern Armenia. It does not border Nagorno-Karabakh, but has border with Iran and Armenia. The total area of the autonomous republic is 5,500 square kilometers with a population of 440,000 people. -0-
