May 9 is also celebrated in remembrance of the Liberation of Shoushi from Azeri control. Itis also marked as Artsax's Defense Army Day.

The celebrations began on Thursday in Stepanakert. Entire Armenian National Took Part in Shoushi Victory, Says General

YEREVAN (ArmRadio)--Our armed forces stand ready to resist any renewed attack on the nation by Armenia's enemies, former Chief of General Staff of Armenia's Armed Forces Colonel-General Gurgen Dalibaltayan told reporters Thursday on the eve of Shoushi Liberation Day.
Armenia's Armed Forces have developed significantly since the Liberation of Shoushi on May 8, 1992, he explained, adding, that the country's defense forces are at a high level of operational readiness and can meet any possible attack with strong resistance.
"The Liberation of Shoushi inspired confidence in our Defense Forces and reinforced our belief in our military capabilities," he said.
May 8 is a day of dual importance for the Armenian people, Dalibatayan explained. Since 1992 it has been marked as a day of commemoration for the Liberation of Shoushi alongside the traditional Victory and Peace Day remembering the over 400,000 Armenian Soldiers who valiantly fought in the Soviet Army during the Second World War.
"The entire Armenian nation participated in the military actions of Shoushi's liberation," he stressed. "Armenians from Armenia, Artaskh and the Diaspora took part in the struggle not only with weapons, but also with moral and material support."
Interestingly enough, he added, there were a number of Russian volunteers who fought alongside Armenian's to liberate Shoushi from Azeri control.
According to Dalibaltayan, who is the co-author of the "Hrazdan Military Operation," Although death seemed eminent against such odds, no one thought about it during the battle. 35 people died during the liberation of Shoushi, he noted.

Today marks 23 years since liberation of Shushi: Armenian heroes
remember exceptional feats

12:38 * 09.05.15

Twenty-three years ago this day, Shushi, a historical Armenia city in
the south-west of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), was liberated from the
Azerbaijani yoke thanks to the Armenian battalions' well-organized
operation Mountain Wedding.

On May 9 1992, an Armenian troop of 1,200 (including four offensive
and 1 reserve command) hoisted the tricolor flag on the ruined dome of
the city's Christian cathedral Ghazanchetstots (Cathedral of Christ
the Holy Savior). The operation's triumphant outcome determined the
further course of the Artsakh liberation battle. The military plan
also received blessings by Archbishop Pargev Martirosyan, the prelate
of the Armenian Apostolic Church's diocese in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The operation was led by Major-General Arkady Ter-Tadevosyan (aka
"Komandos"). Other legendary heroes included Major-General Gurgen
Dalibaltayan, writer and publicist Zori Balayan etc.

Speaking to Tert.am, Astvatsatur Petrosyan, a general who participated
in the heroic battle, recalled the triumphant operation which led to
the liberation of the city's ancient fortress. "From a distance of
just 10m, the adversary would shoot at the Armenian soldiers from
weapons with a target range of 12-15 km," he said.

In memoirs written years later, Archbishop Martirosyan would describe
the operation as a unique crusader invasion. "The soldiers turned to
us on May 8. We hanged crosses from their necks or fixed them on their
forage caps. Some would even draw a cross on their chests, backs and
arms or attach a cross-shaped scrap to their clothes," read the
patriarch's notes.

Remembering the historic feat, Commander Arkady Karapetyan tried to
describe the fortress' seizure in a nutshell. "Nobody had doubs that
we would seize Shushi. It was a miracle, a very big enthusiasm I
haven't ever seen again," he noted.

The commander said he doesn't find that Armenia's losses were great in
the battle. "For seizing a ridge, our losses can be said to have been
minimal," he added.

The operation to liberate Shushi was a four-pronged attack launched on
the night of May 8. The Armenian forces took the fortress after
seizing defense positions on Mount Kirs and taking the road corridor
connecting the city with Lachin under control.

April War was a test to make us ready to face greater battles should the need arise – Armenian military

May 9 marks one of the most glorious holidays of the Armenian nation – the liberation of Shushi, Victory Day and the formation of Karabakh Defense Army, Movses Hakobyan, Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces told the reporters, meantime congratulating the entire Armenian nation on these holidays.

The high-ranking official refrained from touching upon the current problems and shortcomings in the Armenian armed forces. He only noted that the current generation is the worthy successor to the older generation, the same way they are the worthy successor to the Great Patriotic War generation.

Commenting on the reforms made in the army after the April War, Mr. Hakobyan noted that large-scale works have been implemented in the armed forces following the four-day war. Moreover, the fact the currently the situation in the frontline is calm is due to the heroic deeds of the Armenian servicemen and the army reforms.

“The four-day April war was a test to make us ready to face greater battles should the need arise. The adversary tries to inflict a damage to the Armenian soldiers with each passing day and moment, however they do not succeed,” Movses Hakobyan summed up.

On May 9, the festivities began with a visit to the Stepanakert Memorial Complex by the Artsakh leadership, an official delegation from Armenia, and the people of Artsakh. There, the Presidents of Artsakh and Armenia—Bako Sahakyan and Serge Sarkisian—paid tribute the memory of the fallen heroes of the Artsakh Liberation Movement.

In his Victory Day address, President Sarkisian stressed the importance of May 9 for the Armenian people. “The liberation of Shushi saved not only Stepanakert but also the entire people of Artsakh from physical annihilation,” read his address. “This epic deed of the Armenian warriors and its compound historic significance are so overarching that they are still being studied and analyzed by researchers.”

Artsakh President Bako Sahakyan, in his congratulatory address, called the Artsakh Liberation War one of the greatest victories in Armenian history. Sahakyan honored those who were martyrs in the war and also praised those who are currently defending the frontlines.
