I came across this, thought it was pretty interesting. There are photos from 1800s there.

The Ossetian women are very pretty.
No wonder so many of our ancient kings married their ancestors the Alans.
Satenik is an Alanian name.

Armat, may be you should go to Amazonia or Masai-land in Kenya where the women are tall and statuesque.

Armat:

Of course. In the 1800's everyone was shorter. Haven't you noticed even how Armenians got taller?

I think people in the US are getting shorter, though...no doubt due to immigration. I remember I looked it up about 10 years ago, and the average height for women was 5'4. Now I hear it's 5'3...I'm finally average.

I lived in Minnesota for 3 years, and they have many more tall girls than here in California. Go to the upper Midwest, Armat.

The sleeping woman

I'm looking at you,
You are sleeping quiet,
Your crystal breast
Is making me dieing.

I hear it is moving
Nicely and gently,
And your heart is beating
With its honest ethics.
Your tender cheeks
Are red as a fire,
And lips made from ruby
Are covered by smile.
Your sleep is magnific
As vision of Heavens,
And shadows of Angels
Are covering its innocence.
Your breathing is pure
Like you and your soul too,
He is the happiest
Whom you belong to!

What does "is making me dieing" mean?

IMO whoever wrote this poetry is thinking in another language.
I think "dieing" mispelled meant to be dying so the whole sentence would probably mean "It's killing me"

I doubt it, immigration can't explain it, while it is true that some are taller than others, African Americans, Europeans etc., Russians etc., are all in average taller than the average American, and there is no selective immigration of one group in particular which could explain a 1 inch difference, even not excessive Chinese immigration.

Some other factors such as environment should probably be where to look at first (I am talking about average), factors such as life expectency increase, food intake etc., are all factors which alone could explain a sgnificant difference.
