I used to know all the songs mentioned here like "Pison...", "Kerin yekav" (weird song indeed), "Payte dzi", "Kanach batsatum"...

This song is very childish. My brother and I used to sing this when we were toddlers.

The above are not really songs in the strictest sense even though many mothers will make up tunes and sing them.
These are rather show and tell, acting rhymes. Specially the first one where the cupped hands are held up and rotated as if rotating a ball, the child will imitate. When saying porik@s the hand is rubbed aginst the stomach in a rotating manner, when saying nayim the hands are held over the eye as if peeking, and when saying ur the hand once again is rotated in a questioning motion. Is that where the Armenian question mark takes its shape?

The second is also a game where the hands are placed down with the palms down and the fingers spread, and while saying jim jim the fingers are pinched (jimjik). The ditty goes furhter where the rooster is revived and flies away PRRR, and the hands are spread out imitating flight.

Ames, "pisiki gangat@" is a poem by Hovhannes Tumanian, and I'm not so sure how mankakan it is...

nairi, unfortunately she hasn't brought any song books. she says she still has a few books back in armenia, which include notes for the songs...
but we brought a 300-page curriculum book for kindergarten published in '67, which is so "tarapats" that i'm afraid to hold in my hands. it contains all kinds of "patmvatsqner, votanavorner, yerger" for kids from 3 to 7. i'll go through it and will give a few titles (and maybe even type them) for the youngest kids...

This is a game, similar to many childrens' games that can be described as "tag".
Children sitting in a circle with one in the center pretending to cry. At the end of the song he/she will get up and face one one of the players who will be the next one in the middle pretending to cry.

I remember this game, we used to sing this and do the same thing you described...

Children lined up with their hands facing down, holding a "tashkinak" between. Teacher inspecting hands and fingernails.. This was before Kleenex had become a household word.

"Bari luys, bari luys!
Bari luys amenqin."

Of course! This was way before those MK times when we learned a new word for "tashkinak" and began singing; "Salla, salla, salla mendilni. " It is beyond me how some us may still have the heart to dance to it after reading Siamanto's "Dance/Pare@".

Nairi, unfortunately Eastern Armenia was in the Soviet. My mom tells that one day my brother and I returned from kindergarden, having learned a new song. Since my brother loved to sing he started singing happily when he entered our home, something about "hoktemberiq" (?) and my dad strictly looked at my brother and told him not to ever sing that song again. Poor kid, he didn't understand what he had done wrong

Another day he was talking about "Chilyich". "Chilyich" this "Chilyich" that. Finally my mom asked what "Chilyich" was. "En or Lenin papn e" was the reply

It seems like we have the same amount of songs, doesn't it? I mean most of what some of you said in Arevelahayeren (Eastern Armenian) I recall having sung in Arevmdahayeren (Western Armenian).
