Dutch parliament recognizes 1915 Armenian massacre as genocide

THE HAGUE (Reuters) - The Dutch parliament on Thursday passed a motion recognizing as genocide the massacre of as many as 1.5 million Armenians in 1915, although the government said it would not become official policy of the Netherlands.

The motion, which was opposed by just three lawmakers out of 150, risks further straining relations between The Hague and Ankara, which have been tense since the Dutch barred a Turkish minister from campaigning in the Netherlands last year.

Turkey denies that the killings, which took place at the height of World War One, constitute genocide.

Armenia has welcomed debates at the Parliaments of the Netherlands on Armenian genocide.

“We highly appreciate the debates held today in the Parliament of friendly Netherlands and the decisions adopted as the result, which unequivocally reaffirm the recognition of the Armenian Genocide back in 2004,” Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said in a statement.

“With this step, the Parliament of the Netherlands once again reconfirmed its commitment to universal human values and the noble cause of prevention of genocides and crimes against humanity,” Minister Nalbandian said.

Dutch Parliament adopts two motions on Armenian Genocide

dutch-parliament-620x300.jpg

Dutch MPs Thursday overwhelmingly voted in favor of recognizing the 1915 massacres in Armenia as genocide, AFP reported.

“The motion is accepted,” parliamentary speaker Khadija Arib announced after the lower house voted 142 to 3 in favor of the proposal “that parliament in no uncertain terms speak about the Armenian genocide.”

It also agreed to send a cabinet representative to Yerevan in April for the commemorations of the genocide.

The three MPs of DENK (who are of Turkish descent) were the only opponents of the recognition.

Despite Thursday’s vote, acting Foreign Affairs Minister Sigrid Kaag said that the Dutch government would not follow the parliament’s lead.

Kaag says the Cabinet will “continue to exercise restraint” in the politically charged issue.

Never before had the House of Representatives recognized the Armenian genocide so explicitly. In 2004 the the Dutch House of Representatives asked the government “within the framework of its dialogue with Turkey to continuously and expressly “raise the issue of recognition of the Armenian Genocide.”

They recognize it as Genocide at the parliament, but do not call it as Genocide by the government! What am I missing here? Double talk, hypocrites.

THE HAGUE, Feb 22 (Reuters) - The Dutch parliament on Thursday passed a motion recognising as genocide the massacre of as many as 1.5 million Armenians in 1915, although the government said it would not become official policy of the Netherlands.

The motion, which was opposed by just three lawmakers out of 150, risks further straining relations between The Hague and Ankara, which have been tense since the Dutch barred a Turkish minister from campaigning in the Netherlands last year.

"The government will not follow the judgment of the parliament," Foreign Minister Sigrid Kaag told Dutch television before the vote.

She urged "utmost caution when applying the term genocide to past events".

"This cabinet wants to be very careful about relations with Turkey, which have been better," she said.

Relations between the two countries, both members of NATO, went into a freeze last year when the Netherlands deported a Turkish minister who had come to campaign among the Dutch Turkish minority for a constitutional referendum in Turkey.

Turkey summoned the Dutch charge d'affaires to Ankara on Saturday to express its unhappiness with the impending vote on Armenia. Nearly a dozen other EU countries have passed similar resolutions.

On Feb. 5, the Netherlands said it would not attempt to appoint an ambassador to Turkey for now.

A second motion passed on Thursday calls for a high level Dutch government official to attend Armenia's formal genocide remembrance day on April 24. In the past the country's Dutch ambassador has attended.

Kaag said the government will consider how best to represent the Dutch government at the commemoration.

Most scholars outside Turkey consider the killings were a genocide, that is, an attempt to destroy an entire people in part or whole.

Turkey accepts that many Christian Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire were killed during World War One, but contests the figures and denies the killings were systematically orchestrated or constitute a genocide.

"The politicisation of 1915 events by taking them out of historical context is unacceptable," Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said in a statement before the vote.

"Our views and expectations on this issue, which is an indicator of whether the Netherlands has the will to normalise ties with our country, have been expressed to the Dutch charges d'affaires."

Turkey summons Dutch diplomat over Armenian 'genocide' decision

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey summoned the Dutch charge d‘affaires on Friday to complain about the Netherlands parliament recognizing the massacre of as many as 1.5 million Armenians in 1915 as genocide, the Turkish foreign ministry said.

The parliamentary motion, which the Dutch government said would not become official policy, risks further worsening relations already strained over the Netherlands barring Turkish ministers from campaigning for a 2017 referendum that gave President Tayyip Erdogan more power.

A second motion called for a high-level Dutch government official to attend Armenia’s genocide remembrance day on April 24. In the past, the Dutch ambassador has attended.

Turkey accepts many Christian Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire were killed in clashes with Ottoman forces during World War One, but contests the figures and denies the killings were systematically orchestrated and constitute a genocide.

Turkey’s foreign ministry said the Dutch motions were “baseless decisions”. Nearly a dozen other EU countries have passed similar resolutions.

Talks to repair relations between the two countries have broken down and the Netherlands recalled its ambassador on Feb. 5.

If it's not official policy, why did you bother! Are you using Armenian Genocide as a tool like other countries to punish Turkey? Shame on all countries that uses this tactic for gain.

Dutch FM says Turkey's reaction to the Armenian Genocide bill predictable

Dutch Foreign Minister Sigrid Kaag has called Turkey's reaction to the parliament's vote to recognize the Armenian Genocide during the Ottoman Empire as 'predictable.'

In the minister's words there is no point to comment on Turkey's reaction: "There is no need to react to reaction that followed to other reactions," local sour e quotes the minister as saying.

To remind, Turkey condemned the Armenian Genocide resolution that received overwhelming support from Dutch lawmakers. The country's foreign ministry said in a written statement that the decision was not legally binding or valid, and noted that the Dutch government had said it would not become the official policy of the Netherlands.

Turkish ‘traitor’ jibe to Dutch MPs over Armenia sparks anger

Accusations of treason levelled by a Turkish newspaper at five Dutch MPs of Turkish descent for voting to recognise the massacre of Armenians under the Ottoman Empire as “genocide” provoked a strong backlash in The Netherlands on Monday.

Dutch lawmakers overwhelmingly voted on Thursday in favour of a proposal that the country’s parliament refer to the massacre as “the Armenian genocide” — a move strongly condemned by Ankara.

Turkish pro-government newspaper Sabah on Saturday said “the five MPs showed again that they are against Turkey” by supporting the “scandalous decision”.

Dutch parliamentary speaker Khadija Arib responded on Sunday, saying that “threatening or inciting threats in reaction to people expressing their opinion in unacceptable”.

“It has no place in a democracy or an open and free society such as ours,” Arib was quoted Monday by De Volkskrant newspaper as saying, adding that “it is called freedom of speech”.

Armenians have long sought international recognition for the 1915-1917 killings in the Ottoman era as genocide, which they say left some 1.5 million of their people dead.

But Turkey — the Ottoman Empire’s successor state — argues that it was a collective tragedy in which equal numbers of Turks and Armenians died.

Another pro-government newspaper, Yeni Akit, labelled the five lawmakers “degenerates” on Sunday.

Since then, the lawmakers — two from the Socialist Party, two from the environmental GreenLeft party and one from the Liberal VVD party — have reported receiving threats and hate mail.

“The era of intimidation and demonisation is over,” Zihni Ozdil, one of the GreenLeft MPs, told the Algemeen Dagblad tabloid.

“I do not feel totally targeted by these kind of people. I am Dutch,” said Dilan Yesilgoz of the VVD, who arrived in the Netherlands as a refugee in 1984.

So far, parliaments in more than 20 countries, including Germany, have voted for laws or resolutions explicitly recognising the Armenian “genocide”.
