Police Investigating Turkish Flags Appearing at 2 Armenian Private Schools in San Fernando Valley as Possible Hate Crime

Police are investigating the appearance of Turkish flags at two Armenian private schools in the San Fernando Valley as a possible hate crime, school administrators said Tuesday.

The flags were hanging at the Holy Martyrs Ferrahian High School on 5300 White Oak Ave. in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles and the AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School on 6844 Oakdale Ave. in the Canoga Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

Photos showed three flags hanging on Ferrahian High School's gates and a stairwell, early in Tuesday morning.

Ferrahian school administrators said there was no threat to students, and classes continued at both locations.

The incident is being investigated as a hate crime at Ferrahian High School since the suspect trespassed on school property, school officials said.

School administrators said they alerted the Los Angeles Police Department and officers were investigating at both campuses.

Authorities did not identify a suspect.

Some parents took their children out of school early.

"It is scary. Our kids go to private school to be safe, but look what’s going on,” one Ferrahian High School parent said. “It’s ridiculous. What do kids have to do with this?"

At the AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School, where 13 flags lined the school's perimeter, the incident was being characterized as a "hate incident," since the suspect did not trespass, the school said in a Facebook post.

As a precautionary measure, the AGBU school campus "will remain a closed campus until further notice," officials said.

Surveillance footage showed a man approaching the Ferrahian campus at around 4 a.m. and hanging the flags, the Armenian Genocide Committee said in a news release.

The committee called the act a "hate crime."

The years-long Armenian Genocide by the Ottoman Empire, starting in 1915, killed around 1.5 million Armenians. Relations between Armenia and Turkey remain tense as the Turkish government continues to deny the genocide.

Representatives from the Armenian Genocide Committee were expected to speak about the incident at a 5 p.m. news conference.

Cowards as usual they do it in darkness, or mob attacks on defenseless people.  I challenge them to do it during the day if they have the balls!

The Holy Martyrs Ferrahian High School and the AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian School, in Encino and Canoga Park respectively, were vandalized overnight, in what police are calling a hate incident and a hate crime, after school officials reported Turkish flags hanging on campus.

After reviewing footage from security cameras, officials are reporting that at 4 a.m. Tuesday a man wearing a mask approached the Ferrahian campus and began hanging the flags on the fence facing White Oak Avenue and on the staircase railings inside the campus.

Police have been called at both campuses and are investigating.

Ferrahian school principal Sossi Shanlian assured parents that all precaution has been taken to ensure safety of the school.

“We would like to assure you that the school has taken precautions to ensure the safety of our students and authorities have been notified,” said a letter signed by Shanlian sent to parents posted to the school’s Facebook page.

Ferrahian students hung Armenian tri-colors throughout the campus, in reaction to the vandalism at their school.

Similarly, the administration of the Manoogian-Demirdjian school also sent a note to parents reporting that the Los Angeles Police Department has characterized the incident as a “hate incident,” adding that LAPD officers will be on campus on Wednesday during the regular student drop-off hours.

“We are confident that the school is safe, however, as a precautionary measure, we would like everyone to park off campus during afternoon pick up today,” said the letter from Manoogian-Demirdjian administration.

This is a developing story. Asbarez will have more details as they become available.

Turkish organizations acting in USA aimed at desecrating memory of the Armenian Genocide: Turkologist

Member of the House of Representatives of the U.S. Congress Brad Sherman has applied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation to find out who have placed flags of Turkey on two Armenian educational establishments in the USA, Turkologist Ruben Safrastyan told Aysor.am.

“It is necessary to consider the circumstance that the Turkish organizations acting in the United States are carrying out anti-Armenian activity and are aimed at desecrating the memory of the Armenian Genocide, which is really very dangerous,” Safrastyan said, adding that Sherman who is known for his pro-Armenian activity did a right thing by applying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He said this step contradicts the law of the U.S. California State recognizing the Armenian Genocide.

“Placing Turkish flags on the Armenian schools is a very dangerous and illegal act. and the guilty must be revealed and punished in accordance with the U.S. laws,” Safrastyan said.

The Turkologist though did not describe it as an inter-ethnic incident. He said that the Armenian community in California is one of the most loved and respected community.

“I do not think it is an inter-ethnic conflict. I am more inclined to think that what happened is an act by a small organization,” he said, stressing though that the case must be revealed and the guilty be punished.

Last night tens of flags of Turkey were placed in two Armenian schools in the USA.
