Armenian lavash inscribed on UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

On November 26, the decision to inscribe the nomination submitted by Armenia, “Lavash, the preparation, meaning and appearance of traditional bread as an expression of culture in Armenia,” on UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity was made at the ninth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Paris.
The nomination, submitted in 2013, went through procedural stages set out in the Convention, getting positive expert assessment.
Thus, yet another, the 4th Armenian cultural value, was added to UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The nomination was elaborated by the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of Armenia’s National Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Culture, and Armenian National Commission for UNESCO, the press service of the Armenian Foreign Ministry reported.

Armenian bread Lavash has been included in the Representative List
of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014 during the
Movember 26 meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for Safeguarding
of Intangible Cultural Heritage that took place at UNESCO Headquarters
in Paris

Lavash, the preparation, meaning and appearance of traditional bread as
an expression of culture in Armenia" has been included in the list.The
Committee decided that this element submitted in 2013 satisfies the
criteria for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding
is composed of intangible heritage elements that concerned communities
and States Parties consider require urgent measures to keep them
alive. Inscriptions on this List help to mobilize international
cooperation and assistance for stakeholders to undertake appropriate
safeguarding measures. During the period from 2009 to 2013, the
Committee inscribed 35 elements on this List.

Lavash is the fourth cultural element presented by Armenia that is
included in the list.

Armenian bread Lavash has been included in the Representative List
of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity during the Wednesday
meeting of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage committee.

"Lavash, the preparation, meaning and appearance of traditional bread
as an expression of culture in Armenia" has been included in the list.

The Committee decided that this element satisfies the criteria for
inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural
Heritage of Humanity.

It is practically for a year as Armenia's wish to present lavash
for inclusion in the given list, causes serious quarrels in Iran and
Azerbaijan. This year the Azerbaijani party sent an official letter
that contained objections and remarks regarding the possibility
of inclusion of lavash in the UNESCO list. As a result, Armenian
scientists were forced to reply to all the voiced objections.

Some experts from Iran also voiced a viewpoint that lavash is an
ancient type of the Iranian bread. Some of them even called on Iran
itself to present lavash for inclusion in the UNESCO list.

Meanwhile, as Armenia's Culture Minister Hasmik Poghosyan told
Arminfo correspondent earlier, at the official level Iran presented
no objection regarding Armenia's application.

Anyway, UNESCO's decision has put a full stop in the "bread matter".

To add, lavash is the fourth cultural item presented by Armenia
that is included in the UNESCO list. The first is the national epos
"David Sasunsky", the second - the art of cross stone and the third -
the music of duduk.

The UNESCO cultural and scientific organization has decided to include Armenian flatbread on its intangible cultural heritage list, recognizing the importance of the foodstuff to the country's inhabitants.

Lavash, a staple of Armenian cuisine, is a type of soft and very thin flatbread that can be consumed as a wrap for cheese, meat or vegetables. It is also popular throughout the South Caucasus, and in Iran and Turkey.

According to a note on the UNESCO website, preparation of lavash "requires great effort, coordination, experience and special skills" and "strengthens family, community and social ties."

Lavash was accepted onto the list on Wednesday, with the UNESCO organization saying on its site that it acknowledged "the preparation, meaning and appearance of [the] traditional bread as an expression of culture in Armenia."

The Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists, a daring attempt to recognize and preserve immaterial culture, have been compiled since 2008, and entries from 103 countries are currently recognized by UNESCO.

Examples include Argentinian tango, Mongolian calligraphy, Middle Eastern falconry, Vanuatu sand paintings and even the Mediterranean diet.

The lavash puts Armenia, a small, ancient South Caucasus nation of 3 million, ahead of much of the pack with a total of four entries on the Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

Other Armenian entries recognized by UNESCO include the reed wind instrument duduk, the performance of the medieval epic "David of Sassoon," and the art of stone cross making.

Russia has only two items on the list: The culture of the Semeiskiye Old Believer sect, and the Yakut heroic epic "Olonkho," which sees songs comprising up to 36,000 verses performed by singers over the course of several nights.

China is the runaway leader with 38 entries, followed by Japan (22) and Croatia (14). Neither the U.S. nor Britain have a single item of intangible heritage to contribute so far, according to UNESCO.

LAVASH IS ARMENIAN NATIONAL BREAD - ETHNOGRAPHER

Lavash was made only in tonirs (tandoors). And the tonir is typical
of a settled people rather than of nomadic tribes, ethnographer
Armenuhi Stepanyan told Tert.am as she commented on the inscription
of the Armenian lavash on the Representative List of the Intangible
Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which caused Turkey's indignation.

"The Armenians have been baking lavash since time immemorial. Armenian
historians would write about lavash, and it was mentioned even in
pre-Christian times. And Turks were a nomadic people, without any
history or homeland. So neither Kurds nor Turks could have lavash.

Even in Armenia lavash was not baked everywhere because tonirs were
built in the fields," Ms Stepanayn said.

"If the world had some more knowledge, it would know the history of
lavash. Lavash is our national bread," she added.

Sedrak Mamulyan, Chairman of the The Armenian Cookery Traditions
Development and Protection NGO, said that no other nation has ever
made lavash. Turks' discontent is not surprising.

"Turks can feel bitterly hurt because they are the major sponsor. But
I can also say that UNESCO registered harissa as a Turkish dish, but
we intend to present the facts of it being an Armenian dish," he said.

FOOD WARS: UNESCO RECOGNIZES ARMENIAN LAVASH DESPITE OPPOSITION FROM AZERBAIJAN

While Azerbaijan's latest efforts to prevent a United Nations agency
from recognizing Armenian lavash (flat bread) as intangible cultural
heritage have failed, experts in Armenia believe further such
resistance from the neighboring country can be expected in the future.

The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible
Cultural Heritage held its 9th session at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris,
on November 24-28 and during the session the Committee decided to put
Armenia's nomination 'Lavash, the preparation, meaning and appearance
of traditional bread as an expression of culture in Armenia' on
the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of
Humanity. In the wake of this decision Azerbaijan reportedly used
various channels to make UNESCO reconsider the decision, and some
media in Azerbaijan even reported that Armenian lavash was finally
not included in the list.

"Lavash is an element of our culture, and we defend our culture,"
ethnographer and historian Suren Hobosyan said at a press conference
in Yerevan on Tuesday. He called on colleagues in Armenia to prepare
for an "organized and fierce fight" from Azerbaijan.

According to the specialist, although there is bread like lavash in
all neighboring countries and such bread is also prepared in Arab
countries and even India, Armenian lavash is "unique in its kind".

"Perhaps it is Armenians who settled down in Georgia, Turkey, Iran
that brought this element into those countries' culture with them,"
said Hobosyan, adding that the popularity of lavash and the presence
of tonirs, the places where lavash is traditionally baked, in all
regions of the country proves the "Armenianness" of the bread.

"There was no home in Armenia that wouldn't have a tonir. Only
Armenians used to have them and they were 1-1.5 meters deep, because
Armenians did not have much fuel. And, for example, Georgian tonirs are
above ground level, as they had more fuel to burn," the ethnographer
said.

Hobosyan mentioned with regret that lavash is losing its popularity in
Armenia today. "We are losing the battle in our own country. We try to
prove to the world that lavash is ours, but it is not interesting to
the world, we should use it in our country, but even fast food that
is sold in our streets today is introduced from abroad - shaurma,
khachapuri, etc."

TV culinary program host Sonia Tashchyan also believes that more
efforts are needed in Armenia to popularize local food and encourage
people to become "the bearers" of this food culture.

"We have lavash recipes that have been used for hundreds of years,
yet today they are not used," she said.
