TASS, Russia
June 26 2020

Number of coronavirus cases in Armenia surpasses 23,000
For the third day in a row, more than 700 cases have been recorded, as per official statistics

YEREVAN, June 26. /TASS/. The number of coronavirus cases in Armenia increased by 759 in a single day and reached 23,247, the press service of the Ministry of Health reported on Friday.

"Over the past day, 759 new coronavirus cases were detected and 814 patients recovered. The total number of the recovered is 12,149, and cases — 23,247," the report said.

In hospitals, 13 patients died in 24 hours. Since the onset of the infection, the number of deaths has reached 410.

The situation with the spread of coronavirus in Armenia remains difficult. For the third day in a row, more than 700 cases have been recorded.

The first coronavirus case in Armenia was registered on March 1. On March 16, a state of emergency and strict quarantine were introduced in the country, later these measures were extended until July 13. On May 18, the government lifted all economic restrictions; public transport, restaurants, and shopping centers opened. After that the number of infections rose sharply — on May 25, people were required to wear masks in public places.

In early June, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the scale of violations of pandemic safety standards was disastrous. According to him, the country was on the verge of a humanitarian catastrophe. On June 8, he dismissed heads of security agencies, noting that they could not keep the situation under control.

In late December 2019, Chinese officials notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus — named COVID-19 by the WHO — have been reported in every corner of the globe, including Russia.

On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. According to the latest statistics, over 9,724,100 people have been infected worldwide and more than 492,000 deaths have been reported. In addition, so far, over 5,260,700 individuals have recovered from the illness across the globe.

To date, 620,794 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Russia, with 384,152 patients having recovered from the disease. Russia’s latest data indicates 8,781 fatalities nationwide. Earlier, the Russian government set up an Internet hotline to keep the public updated on the coronavirus situation.

Armenia reports 593 new coronavirus cases in past day
Six coronavirus patients died at Armenian hospitals in the past twenty-four hours, bringing fatalities to 459 since the start of the pandemic in the republic, the latest data indicate

YEREVAN, July 2. /TASS/. Coronavirus cases in Armenia grew by 593 in the past twenty-four hours compared to 523 a day earlier, the republic’s Health Ministry reported on Thursday.

"In the past twenty-four hours, 593 new coronavirus cases were identified and 473 patients recovered from the illness. To date, 15,036 patients have recovered from the disease while the total number of the infected stands at 26,658," the ministry said in a statement.

Six coronavirus patients died at Armenian hospitals in the past twenty-four hours, bringing fatalities to 459 since the start of the pandemic in the republic, the latest data indicate.

Yerevan hospitals conducted over 2,100 coronavirus tests in the past twenty-four hours, the ministry said.

The Armenian population equals 2.9 million people, which means that the coronavirus infection has been identified among 0.9% of the republic’s residents since the start of the pandemic in the country. Over this time, 115,765 coronavirus tests have been conducted in the republic, of which 23% have been positive.

In the past week, Armenia registered no less than 400 new coronavirus cases daily whereas for three consecutive days the COVID-19 case count equaled 700.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on June 26 that the situation was prompting the authorities to tighten anti-epidemic requirements.

According to Pashinyan, Armenia was now among the states with the largest number of infections per 1 million people. He stressed again that the basic problem was that Armenian citizens did not fully realize that they were massively breaching anti-epidemic requirements.

In late December 2019, Chinese officials notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus — named COVID-19 by the WHO — have been reported in every corner of the globe.

On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic. According to the latest statistics, over 10,819,000 people have been infected worldwide and more than 519,270 deaths have been reported. In addition, so far, over 6,040,000 individuals have recovered from the illness across the globe.

Armenia in talks with Moderna for potential Covid-19 vaccine

xCoronavirus-vaccine-2-1.jpg.pagespeed.i Reuters

Armenia is negotiating with Moderna for a possible Covid-19 vaccine, Heath Minister Arsen Torosyan told the cabinet meeting today.

The Minister said he has personally talked to Moderna co-founder and CEO Noubar Afeyan. The vaccine is one of the most likely candidates.

Minister Torosyan said there are currently over 100 vaccine candidates, of which 20 are more probable. He said trials held in three stages show that there will most likely be several vaccines.

“This is very important for the world population, as no vaccines had ever been developed for similar viruses,” he said.

According to the Minister, Armenia is holding negotiations in two directions, directly with producers and the WHO and UNICEF platforms, which will try to purchase large amounts and equally distribute it to different countries.

“The danger is that some countries could buy up most supply, meaning the rest will get the vaccine late,” Torosyan stated. That’s why, he said, it’s important to start the talks today, even when the vaccine has not been produced.

The Health Minister said that according to different estimates, the vaccine could be available by the end of 2020 or in early 2021.

YEREVAN, July 8. /TASS/. Coronavirus cases in Armenia grew by 535 in the past twenty-four hours compared to 349 a day earlier, the republic’s Health Ministry reported on Wednesday.

"In the past twenty-four hours, 535 new coronavirus cases were identified and 520 patients recovered from the illness. To date, 17,427 patients have recovered while the total number of the infected stands at 29,820," the ministry said in a statement.

Eighteen patients died at Armenian hospitals in the past twenty-four hours, bringing fatalities to 521 since the start of the pandemic in the republic. Yerevan hospitals conducted over 2,000 coronavirus tests in the past twenty-four hours, the latest data indicate.

The Armenian population equals 2.9 million people, which means that the coronavirus infection has been identified among about 1% of the republic’s residents since the start of the pandemic in the country. Over this time, more than 127,000 coronavirus tests have been conducted in Armenia and over 23% of them have been positive.

The situation with the coronavirus outbreak remains tense in Armenia. The authorities are emphasizing that the basic problem is that Armenian citizens do not fully realize that they are massively breaching anti-epidemic requirements.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan numerously urged citizens to comply with anti-epidemic requirements and personally went out into the streets several times to give out face masks to passers-by. Pashinyan announced on Monday that the government would extend the emergency regime in effect since March by another month from July 14, if the situation did not change for the better.

According to the latest statistics, over 11,965,660 people have been infected worldwide and more than 546,980 deaths have been reported. In addition, so far, over 6,913,790 individuals have recovered from the illness across the globe.
