His numerous prizes include a special prize and diploma at the tenth International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1994 and second prizes in the Queen Sonja Competition in Oslo in 1995.

Tigran Martirosian made a very strong impression. The Armenian bass tackled a broadly outgoing programme with vocal gusto and a range of expressive gesture which suggested a comfortable amount of stage experience: Mr Martirosian seemed perfectly at ease with his material, and with the audience. His was a well-chosen programme beginning with Zaccaria's prayer from Act 2 of Verdi's Nabucco and continuing with Mussorgsky's famous 'Song of the Flea'. An unusual item was a song by Sviridov (1915-1998) -- a vivid drinking song based on a translation into Russian of a poem by Robert Burns. His programme concluded with Basilio's showpiece patter-aria 'La Calunnia' from Rossini's The Barber of Seville: Mr Martirosian's confident acting made the audience forget that this was a concert performance.
