Does anyone know why Vayadzor came to get its name? Are there stories associated with it? I was told of a story involving a girl and a garden.

Yes, you're right, it's Vayots Dzor, a region SE of Armenia. I found out from Armenopedia that it's The Gorge of Woes. On wikipedia, it shows you where it is - bordering on Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan.

That shows how reliable and scholarly Wikipedia is.
Do they also say that Erevan was named when that idiot Noah exclaimed “yerevats”!
Or, that Khorenatsi said the Mamikoneans came from “chinats ashkharh” rather than “jenats ashkharh”?
There is very little said about the origin of the name, however there may be a few leads.
Historic Vayots Dzor, also known as Yeghekyats Dzor and Vardadzor was a region of Historic Armenia, during Soviet times it was subdivided into two - Yegheknadzor and Azizbegov. When the districts were reassigned to 10 down from 37, the two were once again united and named Vayots Dzor with the city of Yegheknadzor as its administrative center.
Those meager leads above are. In the sixth century King Anushirvan of Persia had a fortress built and called it Vays.(pr. like “vice”). The district is surrounded by the mountain range known as Vayots Lernashghta, we will come to that.
It is obvious that “vayots” is a plural possessive noun, which brings us to Vayqi Lernashghta, also known as Vayots Dzori Lernashghta and Hayots Dzori Lernashghta. (note also that “vayq” is the plural of “vay”. Who or what the “vay-s” are? No explanation, yet note above that one of the names is Hayots Lernashghta.
“Avagh parats@s antsavori, -alas to past glories, woe to past glories,- (I) mourn the glories of the past” .
There is no Armenian word “vay”, if anything it is Turkish. In Armenian we say- “vakh em asel”, not “vay em asel”. What is “vakh”? Yes, we know it means “fear”, but this “vakh” is a variation “avakh” which in turn is a variant of “avagh/alas”. When we say “vakh em asel” we actually mean to say “avakh/avagh em asel”.

Vakh/Avakh/Vay sekhaletsah - It's Tsakhkadzor (or Dzaghga dzor) which has a legend: When a young woman's cherished garden with its flowers was swept away into the ravine, time and time again, she decided to have a church built so that people could pray for her garden and flowers to be restored.

Still, Vayots Dzor is interesting, too.
