Nagorno-Karabakh’s (Artsakh) foreign minister used the platform of the Sixth Armenia-Diaspora Conference to address his country’s status and call attention to their absence from the peace talks aimed at resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.

In his speech at the first plenary session of the event, Karen Mirzoyan said he firmly believes that Nagorno-Karabakh’s exclusion from the process was the kemotivating factor for Azerbaijan encouraging it to further aggression.

“When Artsakh was a full-fledged negotiating party, the most important documents were carried into effect. We are confident that by returning Artsakh to the negotiating table as a full-fledged party, we will impart a new spirit and content to the negotiation process, bringing it to its logical end. The co-chairs [of the OSCE Minsk Group] and the international community also share the opinion that Azerbaijan is the only obstacle [to peace]. I am confident we will sooner or later achieve that,” he said.

The minister further stressed the importance of improving and modernizing the military, considering it a key factor restraining Azerbaijan’s belligerent ambitions and securing peace in the region. “In addition to escalating the situation and using the language of threats to talk to the international community, Azerbaijani is consistently working towards distorting the essence of the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict and misrepresenting it to the world,” Mirzoyan said, highlighting also the Azerbaijani authorities’ persistent attempts to add a religious context to the long-running land dispute.
