Islamic State bulldozers 'erasing history' in Nimrud, Iraq

Archaeologists and officials have expressed outrage about the bulldozing of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud by Islamic State militants in Iraq, the BBC reported.
On Thursday IS - which controls swathes of Iraq and Syria - began demolishing the site, which was founded in the 13th Century BC, Iraqi officials said.
The UN cultural body's Iraq director, Alex Plathe, called it "another appalling attack on Iraq's heritage."
"They are erasing our history," Iraqi archaeologist Lamia al-Gailani said.
IS says ancient shrines and statues are "false idols" that have to be smashed.
Nimrud lies about 30km (18 miles) south-east of Mosul.

include: The Great Mosque of Samarra; The Buddhas of Bayman,
Afghanistan; the Ancient city of Bosra, Syria; the Great Mosque
of Aleppo, Syria; Norias of Hama, Syria; Citadel of Aleppo, Syria;
Aleppo Souk, Syria; Deir ez-Zor Bridge, Syria; Nimrud, Iraq; Crac
des Chevaliers, Syria; Jonah's Tomp, Iraq; Khaled ibn Walid Mosque,
Syria; Palmyra, Syria; Armenian Genocide Museum, Syria; Cyrene,
Libya; Museum of Islamic Art, Egypt; Quaid e Azam residency, Pakistan;
Al-Omari Mosque, Gaza; 'Old Beirut'

The Armenian Genocide Memorial Church complex in Deir ez-Zor was
destroyed by ISIS in 2014. Memorial encompassed the church (also known
as Saint Martyrs Church), a genocide memorial and a genocide museum.

It was built between 1989 and 1990 and consecrated in 1991.
