Cool Free Software/Utilities

I hope many will contribute.
(Please don't list any hacked sites or software as this is not what we want)
Here are a couple that I use and can't do without.
Web Album Generator - http://www.ornj.net/...ware/index.html
Description from site - A tool for creating World Wide Web pages from your digital photos. It's perfect for sharing your personal photos with family and friends!
POW! - http://www.analogx.c...network/pow.htm
Description from site - With all the cool things about the web (like my website), there's an even greater amount of really lame things, like those popup advertisements from sites like GeoCities and Tripod. After a late night of closing those damn windows, I couldn't take it any more, and AnalogX POW! was born! A simple utility, just run POW! while browsing on the net, and when one of those nasty popups appears, POW! will automatically close it for you... It's that easy! And that's not all... You can configure POW! to close any new popups that you run across, so if it doesn't close them already, you can easily add/remove them at any time. This is an absolute must for anyone who spends any reasonable (or unreasonable) amount of time surfing the web.
You will find MANY other wonderful tools at analogX.com. I probably have 10 of his utilities installed.
Google Toolbar - http://toolbar.google.com/
Description from site - The new Google Toolbar increases your ability to find information from anywhere on the web and takes only seconds to install.
AVG AntiVirus - http://www.grisoft.com
This is one of the best antivirus programs out there and it is free for home users.
Ad-Aware - http://www.lavasoft.de/
You will be surprised to find out how much stuff is running on your PC that has been put there to help advertisers show you more appropriate ads and collect information about your computer using habits.

A MOST fantastic piece of software. I use this ALL the time for viewing different images. It is FREE, very small, and runs very fast. I use this software a LOT ... try it, you will really like it. Ditch those built-in Windows viewers.
Kazaa Lite
Use this instead of the normal Kazaa (for peer-to-peer file sharing on the FastTrack network). This one does NOT have any spying or advertising crap. I don't use the Gnutella for now but there are some good client for that one too.
Virtual Dub
Another free and very powerful tool ... this one you can use to make, edit, and play around with different video files (AVI). Be sure to get DIVX if you don't have it, since that is THE format for video in my opinion (MPEG4).
The other ones I use a LOT is UltraEdit which is my default editor. However, that one is not free.
Oh, and also, I know a few people that use Trillian a lot for instant messenging. I think you can use that program to IM on icq, yahoo, msn, aol, etc, all at the same time! I only use yahoo so I don't have a need for it myself. You can get it from www.download.com

MetaPad - http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/
I use to use UltraEdit as well, but now I have replaces notepad with MetaPad. I love this editor. it is tiny(40K) yet is is packed with lots of features.
CloudMark - http://www.cloudmark...oducts/spamnet/
This is my spam control tool. It integrates with Outlook and Outlook Express. Anytime anyone on their user list marks an email as spam and the admins do determine that it is spam, it will automatically after that put those messages in a SPAM folder on your PC. You have the ability to unblock those messages for yourself and in the future it will not be "blocked" from your inbox. It also gives you the ability to become the spam police by initiating the blocking.

IE Spell - http://www.iespell.com/
from website - ieSpell is a free Internet Explorer browser extension that spell checks text input boxes on a webpage. It should come in particularly handy for users who do a lot of web-based text entry (e.g. web mails, forums, blogs, diaries). Even if your web application already includes spell checking functionality, you might still want to install this utility because it is definitely much faster than a server-side solution. Plus you get to store and use your personal word list across all your applications, instead of maintaining separate ones on each application.

But we all know that software made in Canada is only about 65% as good as those made in the US.

Make sure you enable the "Use Resample Function for Fullscreen Mode" under the "viewing" tab in the properties. That will significantly improve the scaled image qualities when fit to screen (a bit slower though).
I also use it for doing quick/dirty image editing like crop, copy-paste, and color/brightness adjustments (SHIFT-G)... sometimes I'm too lazy to start photoshop
But for preparing images for web use, ImageReady (comes with photoshop) cannot be beat! It is simply the best.

htp: an HTML pre-processor
(from site) Htp was intended as a HTML pre-processor. It is able to preprocess HTML, XHTML, XML and CSS files (htp could process any text based files). Its purpose is to assist you to maintain a consistent "look" over an entire set of web pages. This is done by allowing you to define your own tags as abbreviations for sets of standard HTML tags.

This is a pretty good translator software. it is free, bun I was only able to get it to work on win 98. It would not work on my W2K or XP machines.
(from site): Small, fast and simple internet based translation software. And it's FREEWARE!
Smart Translator stays at the system tray and with a simple mouse click you can translate to/from english and french, german, italian, spanish, portuguese or russian.

I just wanted to say this since people come up with all sorts of schemes that is supposed to "protect" content, but usually those schemes are trivial to break and they are only giving people a false sense of security. It's not that they are doing anything wrong ... it's just that their problem is a VERY difficult one to solve!!!
