AZERI APOLOGY: SAMBO FIGHTER SAYS SORRY FOR 'UNETHICAL' BEHAVIOR

An Azeri sambo fighter has offered his apology for his unsportsmanlike
behavior during the performance of Armenia's national anthem at a
recent competition, Levon Hayrapetyan, the head of the Sambo (Unarmed
Self-Defense) Federation of Armenia, told Armenpress.

The incident happened during the World Cup that took place in Moscow,
Russia, on March 27-29. Ashot Danielyan, a Karabakh-born Armenian
fighter, won the tournament's event in the 90-kg weight division. In
the same event Azerbaijan's Bakhtiyar Abbasov shared the third place
with a Belarus fighter.

During the performance of Armenia's national anthem in honor of the
winner, instead of listening to it standing on the podium, Abbasov
demonstratively squatted, which was regarded as unethical behavior
on his part.

"It was a violation of the norms of ethics that was also negatively
assessed by the Azerbaijani leadership attending the competition,"
Hayrapetyan said.

The head of the Armenian Sambo Federation said that a representative
of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Russia came up to him and personally
offered his apologies and the Azerbaijani athlete offered his apologies
to Danielyan.

Armenia and Azerbaijan warred in 1992-1994 and are still locked in a
bitter dispute over Nagorno-Karabakh. Despite the latest upsurge in
violence and rising military causalities in the simmering conflict,
the Armenian National Olympic Committee said earlier in March that
Armenian athletes will take part in the first-ever European Games to
be held in Baku in June.

Sambo is one of the two dozen sports included in the program of the
Games that are regarded in Azerbaijan as important for the country's
international image.

AZERBAIJANI SPORTSMAN STRIPPED OF MEDAL FOR DISRESPECTING THE ARMENIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM

MOSCOW -- Azerbaijani sambo wrestler Bakhtiyar Abbasov will lose
his bronze medal, which he had received during the Sambo World Cup,
and be banned from competitions for two years, based on a decision
by the disciplinary committee of the International Sambo Federation.

The President of the European Sambo Federation Sergey Eliseev
had denounced Abbasov for his unsportsmanlike behavior during the
performance of the Armenian national anthem at an award ceremony during
the recent World Cup in Moscow. Abbasov demonstratively squatted
as the Armenian anthem was playing in honor of Ashot Danielian,
an Artsakh-born Armenian fighter, who won the gold at the tournament.

"I condemn this act and find it unacceptable for a sportsman,
especially considering that he's a member of the national team of
Azerbaijan and represents his country at the official World Cup. This
is unsportsmanlike behavior. Such a sportsman does not deserve to
become a prize-winner at the World Cup," Sergey Eliseev said in a
statement posted on the official page of the Federation.

"I consider that the athlete, who violates the rules of the tournament
and ethical norms, should be excluded from competitions and be stripped
of his medal," President of the European Sambo Federation said.

ARMENIA EXPEXTS AN OFFICIAL APOLOGY FROM AZERI SAMBO FEDERATION

The Armenian Sambo Federation released a statement today, demanding
from the International Sambo Federation to punish Azeri athlete
Bakhtiyar Abbasov for disrespecting the Armenian national anthem
during the World Cup award ceremony in Moscow.

Abbasov demonstratively squatted as the Armenian anthem was playing
in honor of Ashot Danielian, an Artsakh-born Armenian fighter, who
won the gold at the tournament.

The Federation said it expects an official assessment of the act by
the Sambo Federation of Azerbaijan and anticipates an apology.

"Abbasov's step was not only a violation of sports ethics, but also a
demonstration of political, national hatred and hostility, which is
unacceptable not only to us, but also the international community,"
the statement reads.

President of the European Sambo Federation Sergey Eliseev also slammed
Abbasov for his "unsportsmanlike behavior."
