The reason why the Queens men achieved glory:) Great world cup though...

Yes. Pele came back in 70 to win the last one. I agree with you about that Brazil team. Rivelino and co. were great. I also like 1982 Brazil team, unfortunately, they lost to Italy in semis.

If I'm correct, I think Pele broke his leg and could not finish the tournament as well.

Bulgarians chopped Pele, he did not brake a leg but his knee was distended thus putting paid to his competition.

The linesman was correct awarding the goal. Hunt turned away from the rebounding ball as it hit the inside goal line... instead of booting the ball into the net again.
Hunt was closest to the rebounding ball and did not see the need to boot it in...
Hurst's world cup hat trick is still unequalled.

To me it the event seemed like WWIII between Germany and England. The crowds in Wembley went wild screeming and suffered mass meningitis, including myself. We were hoarse for a week.

Funny that there were some of us Armenians , very pro Germany (those from Europe or Middle east) and some pro England (those residing in UK or US).
Would you beleive the animosity was such amongst the Armenians, that a few came to blows... wink.gif
I would say we were maybe 15-20 guys amongst over 100.000 spectators... go figure tongue.gif

My opinion is that the 1970 Brazil is the greatest team ever assembled.

100% with you on that, as being the best national team assembled...
The best ever of Pele... with Rivelino (omar sherif alike) Jarzhinho et al.

Pele had two remarkable moments, against Cheks,.... his shot from the center field missed the goal by mere feet when the goalie was out of position...
He faked the goalie by cross running and not touching the ball, then chasing it only to miss by inches for what would have been a historic moment in football lore... biggrin.gif

You're lucky Brazilians did'nt murder you...

I have also watched Georgie Best at his best...when the comentators were saying Georgie Best 4 Benfica of Eusebio nil...
I saw Eusebios 4 goals for Portugal against N.Koreans, coming back from 0-3 at half time to win 5-3 at the end, the 5th goal coming from Torrez the giraff wink.gif
BTW ManU has been my favorit team since 1958... Even though I have attended regularly Stamford Bridge games in the 60s-70s.

yes. Well. I would not try that among Germans, Brits, Russians, etc. Brazilians are ok. They are lovers not fighters for the most part.
I heard that Portugal-N. Korea was something else. Ararat played couple of games against English teams. West Ham-Ararat in European cup in 75 0r 76
Leeds-Ararat. Ararat-Celtic in 76.
I grew up a time when Aston villa was dominating early 80s. Before it was Liverpool for a while. Those 80s British team were pretty good.

Moscow’s Luzhniki joins ‘elite stadiums club’

The stunning all-English Champions League final rage is not over yet, as tens of thousands of Manchester United fans continue to celebrate their victory over Chelsea. On May 21 the crowd at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium saw a piece of world class football, hailed as a legendary match.

After that, UEFA has awarded the Luzhniki Olympic Sports Complex the title of one of the three ‘elite’ stadiums in the world, according to Deputy Moscow Mayor Valery Vinogradov.

“The UEFA administration have also presented a special plaque to Luzhniki,” Vinogradov added.

He also said the UEFA have given a positive evaluation of the Champions League final match arrangements.

The other two ‘elite’ stadiums are Manchester City Stadium and Emirates Stadium – the home stadium of Arsenal FC.

To anyone who was unaware, in April of this year, Armenia reached its highest ever Fifa World Ranking in history - 78th place. It's also our current ranking, after a breif drp down to 80th or so. I'm very happy with how we've performed in rencent months. It was the win over Poland during Euro 008 qualifying that shot us up. And I think that it gave us confidence that we can cause upsets. I'm disspointed that we lost to Kazhakistan in the end though, this was our best chance to chock up more than 2 wins in qualifying for a maor tournament. They were so close. Still, onwards and upwards I will hope.

Armenia surprise Turkey in Yerevan
Wednesday 20 August 2008
Henrik Mkhitaryan scored the late winner in Yerevan (©Khachik Chakhoyan)

Last-gasp goals from Karlen Mkrtchyan and Henrik Mkhitaryan denied Turkey a move to the top of qualifying Group 2.

Aerial presence
With Turkey needing three points to leapfrog the Czech Republic and take pole position in the race for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-offs, the visitors did their best to exploit the physical presence of Mehmet Batdal, aiming a series of crosses at the tall striker. Batdal had one effort ruled out for offside, while at the other end Gevorg Kazaryan and Ogannes Goaryan missed good chances before Onur Recep Kıvrak made a great save to deny Artur Stepanyan from close range just before the interval.

Shock winner
The keeper foiled Mkhitaryan in a one-on-one situation after half-time, and it looked like Armenia would pay for their profligacy as a blunder from full-back Mikheil Simonyan left Turkey in a great situation, with Abdullah Durak breaking the deadlock on 70 minutes. However, to the delight of a 12,000-strong crowd at the Hrazdan Stadium in Yerevan, Mkrtchyan finished from a Goaryan free-kick one minute from time, with Mkhitaryan atoning for his earlier miss in added time by beating Onur for a shock winner.

Turk pres to accept the invitation of Sargsyan to visit Armenia: report

http://www.hurriyet....7...44&sz=68441
Saturday, August 30, 2008

Turkish President Abdullah Gul has accepted an invitation from his
Armenian counterpart to watch the World Cup qualifier between the
Turkish-Armenian national teams in Yerevan as the Turkish Foreign
Ministry said the visit would contribute to renewed relations between
the two countries, Vatan daily reported on Saturday. (UPDATED)

Armenia however has not yet been informed of Gul's decision, the report
said, adding that the president is expected to make an official
announcement next week.

Armenia President Serz Sargsyan invited Gul to watch the World Cup
qualifying match between the two country's national teams on Sept. 6 to
mark "a new symbolic start in the two countries' relations".

Gul had previously said that Sargsyan's invitation is an example of
contributions towards solving the problems that exist between the two
countries and that an evaluation of the invitation was underway taking
every possibility into account.

In a gesture of good faith, Armenia offered to lift all visa
requirements and payments for Turkish citizens traveling to the capital
Yerevan for the match, the report also said.

Although Turkey is among the first countries to recognize Armenia when
it declared its independence, there are no diplomatic relations between
two countries as Armenia continues to press the international community
to admit the so-called "genocide" claims, instead of accepting Turkey's
call to investigate the allegations, and its invasion of 20 percent of
Azerbaijani territory due to the Nagorno-Artsax issue despite U.N.
Security Council resolutions on the issue.

Armenia, with the backing of the Diaspora, claims up to 1.5 million of
their kin were slaughtered in orchestrated killings in 1915. Turkey
rejects the claims, saying that 300,000
