As an Armenian, I truly feel that the reason why we are having problems with our country is because of corrupt politicians with Soviet era administrations. I feel that our politicians are sucking the blood out of us. They are charging for everything. Because of that, people are starting to leave our homeland because of the unaffordable lifestyle. Do you ever think that these politicians will die off? Do you believe that sometime in the near future we will have a president that actually cares about preserving our fragile nation, instead sucking blood out of it. Maybe somebody younger will step in and change things and attract diaspora from all parts of the world. What do you think the future of our nation is, say in 10-30 years? Do you think that Turkey or Azerbaijan, maybe even Russia may attempt something? This is out of pure interest. BTW I'm an Armenian American and I moving to Armenia ;) Very excited!!!

When countries think of their own interests only, trust is not factored at all. They will do what is best for them, therefore when our and their interest coincides then they will make it look as if they care for us. Either you are with us or against us mentality from both sides will not stop, what is left is we need to tell everybody that we are on our side. In order to be successful, first our government needs to be on Armenia's side and not on their pocket's side. This will happen only through grass roots change when the youth will take over and remove the corruption cancer from the society once and for all, then there will be hope for the country.

I would rather trust Lucifer before trusting Russia or America.

BTW, some time ago a random member of this forum made a valuable observation in a post titled on the Stupidy of the Stupids. Read it in the Diaspora forum.

I would not trust either country in regards to Armenia and its well being. Let's not forget, most countries have their own interests and if any sort of relationship is made with Armenia from either Russia or America, it's strictly political. Let's not forget that it was the Russians who seized much of our lands to Turkey. Let us also not forget that America refuses to accept the events of 1915-1917 as a genocide, due to its strategic alliance with Turkey.

However, being born and raised in America, I can easily say that I'd rather trust America and the West rather than trust Russia. Russia resorts to aggression and oppression in order to influence those around them, whether they would like it or not. I can say the same for Armenia. I strongly believe, with all my heart, that Armenia is better off without Russia. In fact, the West and particularly Europe is very fond of Armenia and Armenians.

It breaks my heart to know that Armenia is being governed by a group of selfish men who are slaves of Russia and Putin.

Russia and Armenia are not only eternal friends but also spiritual brothers.

Armenia is in poor shape because the population is in sin, it needs to grow spiritually and live a sin free life.

"2015 Gyumri massacre was a mass murder of seven members of the Armenian Avetisyan family in Gyumri, Armenia, on January 12, 2015. The suspect, Valery Permyakov, a Russian serviceman from the Russian 102nd Military Base, was apprehended by the Armenia-based Russian Border Guards near the border with Turkey and brought into custody at the Gyumri base for further investigation under the Russian jurisdiction. Spontaneous demonstrations in Gyumri and Yerevan ensued, demanding that Permyakov be tried and serve his sentence in Armenia. Perceived inadequate government response further triggered public outrage in Armenia."

The chances that Russia will help us to free Western Armenia is as much as the help that we will get from the rest of the world, which is zero. We should rely on ourselves only.

POSITION OF RUSSIAN CHURCH TOWARDS ARMENIAN GENOCIDE IS INVARIABLE

18:40, 11 January, 2016

YEREVAN, JANUARY 11, ARMENPRESS. Position of the Russian Church
towards the Armenian Genocide is invariable. Spokesman of Patriarch
Kirill of Moscow and All Russia Deacon Alexander Volkov announced
about this in a statement for Armenian news agencies.

"In an interview for "Rossiya" TV channel His Holiness Patriarch
Kirill spoke about the terrible and unprecedented situation of the
Christians in Syria and Iraq. In that context, His Holiness brought
the example of the history of the Ottoman Empire, where there were
periods that the imposed order ensured relative security and stability
in the lives of religious minorities.

The absence of such an order, as happened 100 years ago in the Ottoman
Empire, leads to tragic events in modern Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.

This is the reason we call the current developments genocide. The
position of our Church towards the Armenian Genocide has been clearly
mentioned several times in the numerous official statements and
pastorals of the Patriarch. There are brilliant examples demonstrating
our position towards the issue: the top level participation of the
Russian Orthodox Church in the key events of the Armenian Apostolic
Church, participation of His Holiness in the consecration of Armenian
Church in Moscow, the visit of the delegation of the Russian Church
to Yerevan in 2015 to participate in the remembrance events dedicated
to the 100th anniversary of the Genocide.

Position of the Russian Church remains invariable. We always
protected that position transparently and publicly in international,
inter-Christian and inter-religious platforms and will continue to do
that", "Armenpress" reports the statement reads, which was disseminated
by the press service of the Holy See.

TIGRAN KHZMALYAN:PATRIARCH KIRILL'S STATEMENT WAS A STAB IN THE BACK (VIDEO)

19:42 | January 11,2016 | Politics

Armenian film director Tigran Khzmalyan says it is not accidental that
in his January 7 interview, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia
said 'Christians were not destroyed in the Ottoman Empire by anyone.'

"Many blame Patriarch Kirill for being illiterate and ignorant. But
this, of course, is naivety. Kirill is an educated man who knows what
to say, when to say and where to say. He is not an ordinary person; he
is the spiritual leader of Russia who has a top position in Putin-led
Russia," Mr Khzmalyan told A1+.

The film director says the main reason is the present strained
relations between Russia and Turkey. "Russia is now seeking a way out
of this "no-war, no-peace" situation. Kirill was probably entrusted
with the mission of creating an opportunity and he did it. He did
not made a religious statement he made a political announcement,"
the filmmaker continued.

Mr Khzmalyan reminded that in 1903, 12 years before the Armenian
Genocide, the Russian government and the Church has launched a campaign
against the Armenian Church and schools. He says it was the logical
continuation of policy that Russia implemented for many decades in
its relations with Armenia.

"By destroying, discrediting and rejecting the spiritual identity of
Armenians, they are paving the way to destroy our national identity.

Instead of making loud announcements and leaving Facebook posts,
we had better think about maintaining our independent statehood and
strengthen our country," he added.

Tigran Khzmalyan is sure that it was a slap in the face, a very heavy
blow. "As Russians would say about a Turkish fighter 'this is another
stab in the back or below the waistline.' At the same time, I think it
should become a sobering signal for Armenians, especially for those who
are still optimistic about the relations between Armenia and Russia."

RUSSIAN CHURCH DENIES DENYING: PATRIARCH KIRILL SAYS POSITION ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE UNCHANGED

Genocide | 12.01.16 | 10:48

Memorial.(Archive)

In response to some angry reactions in Armenia to Russian Patriarch
Kirill's controversial comments on the treatment of Christians in the
Empire, the Russian Orthodox Church has clarified that its supreme
leader did not thereby deny the 1915 Armenian Genocide.

In a statement to Armenian media passed through a representative of
the Armenian Apostolic Church a spokesman for Kirill gave assurances
that the Russian Orthodox Church continues to believe that the World
War I-era massacres of some 1.5 million Armenians constituted genocide.

In a January 7 interview to Russia's state television Patriarch Kirill
discussed the plight of shrinking Christian communities in the Middle
East, describing the atrocities being committed by Islamist militants
against Christians in the region as genocide.

He controversially said that "nothing similar to the current events
had ever happened in the Islamic world."

"Take, for example, the Turkish, Ottoman Empire. Yes, there were
Christian minorities there but they were not exterminated," Kirill
said.

The remarks elicited angry reactions in Armenian social media and
also prompted at least one political party to call on the Armenian
government and church officials to seek clarification from the
Russian side.

Rev. Vahram Melikyan, an Armenian Apostolic Church spokesperson
at the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin, later published a statement
released to the Armenian media by Patriarch Kirill's spokesman,
Rev. Alexander Volkov.

Volkov insisted that in his remarks Kirill referred to only some
periods of Ottoman history that saw "relative security and stability
in the lives of religious minorities."

"The absence of such order -- both in the Ottoman Empire 100 years ago
and in contemporary Iraq, Syria and Libya -- always leads to tragic
events," he said. "The position of our Church on the Armenian genocide
has been repeatedly and clearly expressed in numerous statements and
messages of the Patriarch."

High-level Russian Orthodox clerics took part in the 2015 events in
Armenia that marked the centennial of the Armenian Genocide. Kirill
himself prayed and laid flowers at the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial to
Armenian Genocide victims in Yerevan when he visited Armenia back
in 2010.

STATEMENT OF PATRIARCH OF ALL RUSSIA SPARKS DISCONTENT IN POLITICAL CIRCLES OF ARMENIA, BUT MOTHER SEE OF HOLY ETCHMIADZIN GIVES NO RESPONSE YET

by Tatevik Shahunyan

Tuesday, January 12, 14:15

The Christmas interview of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia,
in which he said that the Christian minorities were not annihilated in
Ottoman Turkey, caused serious discontent in the public and political
circles.

In particular, the specified interview has been criticized by
representatives of ARF Dashnaktsutyun Party, Heritage Party, as
well as various NGOs, however, the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin
has given no response yet. Vahram Melikyan, a representative of the
Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, said that they have received the
Russian Orthodox Church's clarification, which says that the stand
of the Russian Orthodox Church on the matter of the Armenian Genocide
remains unchanged.

The clarification says, "The Russian Orthodox Church's stand on the
matter of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915 remains
unchanged. We have always publicly asserted and will keep asserting
this stand on international, inter-Christian and inter-religious
platforms. In an interview with Rossiya TV channel, Patriarch Kirill
spoke of the dreadful and unprecedented condition of the Christians in
Syria and Iraq over the past few years. In this context, the Patriarch
specified the history of the Ottoman Empire, where in certain periods
the order ensured conventional security and stability in the life
of religious minorities. The lack of such order both in the Ottoman
Empire 100 years ago and in present-day Iraq, Syria and Libya results
in tragic developments. This is why we qualify the ongoing events as
genocide. Our church's stand on the issue of the Armenian Genocide
has repeatedly been expressed in numerous official statements and
addresses of the Patriarch. The vivid evidence of our stand is the
Russian Orthodox Church's participation in the important events of
the Armenian Apostolic Church at the highest level - the Patriarch's
participation in the consecration of the Armenian cathedral in
Moscow, the visit of the Russian Church's delegation to Yerevan and
participation in the Armenian Genocide Centenary events last year".

Earlier, in his Christmas interview on the developments in the Middle
East and Syria, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said, "The
relations between the Christians and Muslims were not cloudless in
the history. We know there were cases of forced conversion into their
own faith, seizure of Christian Byzantium's territories, but if we put
aside the military actions that resulted in losses on both sides, we
can say that the Islamic world has never seen what is going on today".

Patriarch Kirill qualified the events in the Middle East in late XXc.

and early XXIc. as genocide, opposing them to the past, and pointed out
the example of Ottoman Turkey. "Yes, there were Christian minorities
in Ottoman Turley, but no one annihilated them," he said.

I highly doubt that Russia will take that route, never did and never will.

STRAIN IN RUSSIAN-TURKISH RELATIONS WILL MAKE MOSCOW DENOUNCE TREATIES OF KARS AND MOSCOW

by David Stepanyan

Tuesday, January 12, 14:09

The recent strain in the Russian-Turkish relations will make Moscow
denounce the Treaty of Kars and the Treaty of Moscow unilaterally,
which will enable Russia to return up to 30% of Turkey's current
territories.

According to Russian mass media, relevant information was disseminated
by the Russian president's administration.

Under the Russian-Turkish Treaty of Moscow of 1921, Turkey received
the Armenian towns of Kars and Ardahan. Russia is free to extend the
Treaty every 25 years. If now Moscow refuses to do it, Turkey will
have to return many territories, including to Armenia.

If Moscow decides to denounce the Treaty of Kars of 1923 between
Russia and Turkey, Armenia will have an opportunity to get back
its historical and biblical Mount Ararat that was transferred under
jurisdiction of Turkey by the given Treaty. It is noteworthy that
Armenia still refuses to recognize that Treaty.

ARMENIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY DOES NOT COMMENT ON PATRIARCH KIRILL'S STATEMENT

by Nana Martirosyan

Wednesday, January 13, 12:56

The Foreign Ministry of Armenia reports that Yerevan sees no need
for additional comments following the Russian Orthodox Church's
clarification on the statement of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All
Russia, RFE/RL Armenian Service reports.

To note, the Christmas interview of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and
All Russia, in which he said that the Christian minorities were not
annihilated in Ottoman Turkey, caused serious discontent in the public
and political circles of Armenia.

Afterwards the Russian Orthodox Church made clarifications saying
that the stand of the Russian Orthodox Church on the matter of the
Armenian Genocide remains unchanged.

"Our church's stand on the issue of the Armenian Genocide has
repeatedly been expressed in numerous official statements and
addresses of the Patriarch. The vivid evidence of our stand is the
Russian Orthodox Church's participation in the important events of
the Armenian Apostolic Church at the highest level - the Patriarch's
participation in the consecration of the Armenian cathedral in
Moscow, the visit of the Russian Church's delegation to Yerevan and
participation in the Armenian Genocide Centenary events last year,"
the head of the patriarchal press office said.

The head of the press office of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin,
Vahram Melikyan, said that the clarification was issued in response
to the request of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. "The Russian
Orthodox Church has always supported the process of recognition of
the Armenian Genocide. One thing is clear - one should not politicize
the issue, because one cannot judge about the stand of the church by
one statement taken out of the context, especially as that Church
has repeatedly expressed its stand and supported Armenian people,
Armenian church and our motherland," he said.

They are very disappointing, can't understand this from the Russian Orthodox Church.

{"Take, for example, the Turkish, Ottoman Empire. Yes, there were
Christian minorities there but they were not exterminated," Kirill
said.}

Can he actually have said the above? What would it take to qualify as extermination, that they killed every last one of us?

He is just saying that they did kill Christians, but sometimes they gave them a break in order to accumulate fortune for the next time of killings and plunder! What a shame this coming from a clergy, I guess he is a politician first.

ARMENIANS SHOULD EXPECT MORE SERIOUS EXPLANATION FROM RUSSIA PATRIARCH?

11:33, 15.01.2016
Region:World News, Armenia, Russia, Turkey
Theme: Politics

YEREVAN. - At Thursday's meeting of the Commission on Religion,
Diaspora and International Integration Issues of the Public Council
of Armenia, it was decided to respond with a statement to Russian
Patriarch Kirill's statement that the Christian minorities in the
Ottoman Empire were not annihilated.

Public Council member Karine Danielyan, who is the person behind this
proposal, told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

"We need to respond to this statement and expect a more serious
explanation, since the explanation given by the Moscow Patriarchate
is insufficient," Danielyan noted.

She added that at Friday's meeting of the Public Council, they
will decide on the format of the adequate response they will demand
regarding this statement by Kirill I, Patriarch of Moscow and all
Russia of the Russian Orthodox Church.

"I think that we need to petition to the Russian embassy [in Armenia's
capital city of Yerevan] with an open letter," Karine Danielyan said.

"Now, we are working on making additions to the [respective] statement
[of ours]."

The Russian Patriarch's recent TV interview, during which he had
made the abovementioned statement, caused protests among the Armenian
society.

Subsequently, the Patriarch's spokesperson commented on the given
part of this interview. He noted that the Russian Orthodox Church's
stance on Armenian Genocide was repeatedly expressed through official
announcements and the Patriarch's remarks, whose evidence is the
Russian Orthodox Church's participation in the Armenian Genocide
Centennial commemorations in 2015.

Russian Patriarch in Even More Awkward Situation

Hakob Badalyan, Political Commentator
Comments - 14 January 2016, 00:11

The Russian church has issued a clarification on Patriarch Cyril's
statement which has caused a backlash in Armenia. The spiritual leader
of Russia announced in an interview with the father of the Russian
propaganda that Christians were not destroyed in Ottoman Turkey.

After dissatisfaction had been expressed by some public circles in
Armenia, the Russian church explained what Cyril had meant to say.

In an interview with Rossiya TV channel Patriarch Cyril spoke about
the plight of the Christians in Syria and Iraq. In this context, the
patriarch gave the example of the Ottoman Empire where there were
periods when relative security and stability was provided for
religious minorities, Cyril's spokesman explains, saying that their
stance on the Armenian genocide has not changed and has been expressed
for multiple times, including through participation in the events
organized by the Armenian Apostolic Church.

First of all, it should be noted that the answer of the Russian church
has been communicated through the communication office of the Holy
Sea. However, a clarification should be sought and claimed and
received instead of becoming the communicator of the clarification of
the Russian church, the spokesman for Cyril.

Cyril made his statement on Rossiya Channel which is broadcast to an
audience of tens and hundreds of millions. Hence, the Russian church
must be demanded to give a clarification in a way that is adequate to
that audience instead of receiving and reporting some information.

In addition, this information is absurd. What does it mean `Cyril
meant periods in the history of Ottoman Turkey when there was
stability and security for the Christians'? The Christians were not
chased in the Near East always, their trouble began two-three years
ago and before that they used to live in both Syria and Iraq. Hence,
there were stages of `security and stability' almost everywhere.

When Cyril gives the example of those `periods' in Ottoman Turkey, as
his spokesman explained, Cyril puts on scales those 1.5-2 million
Armenians displaced or killed in Ottoman Turkey and the periods of
`security and stability'. In fact, according to Cyril, the destiny of
2 million killed Armenians is equal to those periods of `security and
stability'.

Hence, while trying to soften Cyril's statement, his spokesman
actually exposed Cyril, made his encroachment against the memory of
millions of innocent Armenians more striking.

The statement that the stance on the genocide of Armenians is
unchanged does not mean anything because even with that logic Turkey
may say it has condemned the genocide because some of the leaders of
the government of Young Turks which perpetrated it were sentenced to
death by the verdict of the Turkish court, and Soghomon Tehleryan
stated to execute this very sentence.

On the other hand, Cyril's position is not something new, it is
Russia's actual position. After all, two years ago when the
Russian-Turkish relations were especially warm, Putin announced in his
big press conference that there may have been minor issues during
Ataturk's tenure but the Russian-Turkish relations were nice and warm.

In other words, it is also an advantage of the stages of `security and
stability' over the destiny of millions of innocent Armenians.
Otherwise, how could the relations with Ataturk be good when your
friends and allies are slaughtered? Hence, the slaughter was the
`minor issue' according to the Russian president.

Hence, Cyril did not express his or the Church's stance but the
official stance of Russia uttered by Putin two years ago.
