Four Armenian-Americans are slated to receive the Ellis Island Medal of Honor during an official ceremony on May 12, Asbarez reported.
The National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations, which awards the medals, announced that John
Charles Ghailian, Dr. Vicken Sepilian, Larry Gagosian and Dr. John Bilezikian will receive medals of honor.
According to the NECO website, “the Ellis Island Medals of Honor embody the spirit of America in their celebration of patriotism, tolerance, brotherhood and diversity. They recognize individuals who have made it their mission to share with those less fortunate their wealth of knowledge, indomitable courage, boundless compassion, unique talents and selfless generosity; all while maintaining the traditions of their ethnic heritage as they uphold the ideals and spirit of America. As always, NECO remains dedicated to the maintenance and restoration of America’s greatest symbol of its immigrant history, Ellis Island.”
Past Armenian-American Ellis Island Medal recipients include, Harry Nadjarian, Varant Frank Melkonian, Joan Agajanian Quinn, Dr. Garo Tertzakian, Mike Sarian, Vahe Karapetian, Elizabeth Aghbabian, and Christopher Atamian among dozens of others.

Leading Armenian cyclist Edgar Stepanyan has become the winner of 12th Annual Dana Point Grand Prix of Cycling championship held in California, U.S on 29 April, the cyclist himself informed in a post on Facebook.
Stepanyan took part in the cycling event as part of the Velo Pasadena Racing American team, reports Panorama.am.
“Dana Point Grand Prix is one of the top 10 U.S. calendar championships. My biggest goal was winning it. I won by 19 seconds solo breakaway. So, I did my best to win and dedicate this victory to you,” he said.

The young weightlifter from Armenia Harutyun Grigoryan won the gold medal at the youthful European Weightlifting Championships in Milan.
In the competition among weightlifters U 15 in the 77 kg weight class, our athlete was simply out of competition. He lifted 117 kg in an exercise and is 11 kg ahead of two rivals pursuing him. In the push exercise Harutyun Grigoryan was also the best, lifting 141 kg. Here he was only one kilogram ahead of the Hungarian Benjamin Federer.
By the result Harutyun Grigoryan confidently won the first place and was declared the champion of Europe. Benjamin Federer, who was behind the leader by 12 kg, took the second place.

Armenian grandmaster Hovhannes Gabuzyan has been named the winner of the Washington International Chess Tournament which brought together 72 players and 22 grandmasters this year.
As the chess federation of Armenia reports, Gabuzyan who was the sole representative of Armenia at the tournament, scored 7.5 points out of 9 and was placed the first, one point ahead of Russia’s Andrey Stukopin.
Due to the victory, the Armenian has improved his personal rating by 22 points, the source said.

Armenia wins 40th World Chess Olympiad in IstanbulArmenia cemented its reputation as a chess superpower by winning gold at the Chess Olympiad, after defeating Hungary 2.5-1.5 in the final round of the World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul.
In the decisive round on Sunday Armenian men beat Hungary 2.5-1.5 to gather 19 points in the 11-round competition. Sergei Movsesian secured the crucial victory against Hungary’s Zoltan Almasi. Levon Aronian, Vladimir Akopian, and Gabriel Sargissian drew their games.
Russia defeated Germany 3-1, but fell behind Armenia on tiebreak. Ukraine beat China 3-1 and came third..
Armenia won the 2006 and 2008 Olympiads, and came in seventh in 2010. It came third in 1992, 2002 and 2004.

Young Armenian athlete David Dadikyan has snatched the gold medal at the World Armwrestling Championship being held in Antalya, Turkey.
He won the champion’s title after overpowering his opponent with the left hand in the heavyweight class, the Armenian National Olympic Committee told Panorama.am.
The winning athlete is also an Armenian army soldier.

Armenia’s Serob Abrahamyan has become a gold medalist at the World Armwrestling and World Para-Armwrestling Championship being held in Antalya, Turkey.
Abrahamyan defeated his Russian opponent in the final of the Men 85 kg para-armwrestling competition.
As reported earlier, Armenia’s Davit Dadikyan had won a gold medal in the Youth Men 90+ kg competition at this championship in Antalya.

The Armenian team won the fourth gold medal in the Arm-Wrestling World Championships underway in Istanbul, Turkey.
As the National Olympic reported, on the fourth day of the competition Khachatur Saribekyan defeated all opponents and was declared World Champion.
