QUOTE(Johannes @ Aug 1 2007, 09:24 AM)
Without going into the etymology . Johannes has already shown us the Greek variant of the word. ECCLESIA simply means “assembly hall” “zhoghovaran/ԺՈՂՈՎԱՐԱՆ” in Armenian. Look below and follow the respective sequences of the books/chapters of the OT. Even though the Armenian version lists it as “ZHOGHOVOGH/ԺՈՂՈՎՈՂ” we know that the correct word is “ժողովողԻ(note the ending Ի.

Song of SolomonWe have, in the past discussed the origin of the Armenian word “ZHAM/ԺԱՄ” to mean church, and I have been urprised that even the likes of Ajarian subscribe to the idea that ir is because the church “rang the “campana/bell” at prescribed times of the day, yet he and others may have missed the fact that in the Arabic language, a “place of gathering/and assembly hall” is known as “jame’ “, i.e. a pace for the “jema’a”, the “crowd” the “public”, from which the word “jami” to mean a “mosque”.
So! How is “ԵԿԵՂԵՑԻ” a direct transliteration form the Greek “ecclesia”is any different from a “zhogovaran/ժողովարան” , jame’ and jami/ժամ*
*btw. In many Kililikian dialects** the word appears as “izham/իժամ” as we have seen that often we use a vowel before certain consonants for whatever reson, like when we call those people in the north “u-russ” instead of “russ”, and those people to the west as “u-rum” instead of “rum/roman”.
** Ther is aditty in the Marash dialect where the brides call for celebration that goes ; “բիւզ*** պէրմէրը ԻԺՈՄ/ԻԺԱՄգնոց իկեք հորսնեք ալոյ քեշինք/բոզ պարմայրը իժամ գնաց եկեք հարսներ ալայ քաշենք”
***I’d rather not say what “biuzբիւզ” means. But the above ditty goes “… the wh*re mother in law went to church. C’mon you brides let’s have a round-dance/շուրջ-պար/alay”.
You will also notice that the A is turned to O, Ա to Ո as in alay/ալոյ and hars/հորս.
