Komitas the Heretic?
There have been calls for Komitas to be canonized and sanctified.
I agree, as he can be as saintly as any.
Yet.
Does anyone else sense that, given time, Komitas may have disavowed his vows of celibatic clerical life?
We can simplistically, easily, facilement ascribe his loss of sense to the horrible scenes of the murder of his soul mates. But, could there have been a deeper "spiritual"(clerical v secular artistic) reason for it?
Hints and clues will follow, mainly from Sevak’s Anlreli Zangakatun.
See highlighted passages below. In addition to one biography where it is suggested that he had a falling out with the powers to be in Ejmiatsin, yet even in Bolis he was severely reprimanded by the Patriarch for airing sacred church music from secular stages and theaters. He was intimately associated with the day's intelligentsia in Bolis, his most intimate friends were the denizens of the "Ojakh", the likes of Halideh Edib (the so caled humanist, we have seen her in several posts here ) and the poet Mehmet Emin.
Details will follow, including his own autobiography, which is very dry and simply chronological in nature.
In the meantime, read ….

From Greek name "having long hair". In old days it mainly was the name of clergymen. This name became popular in honor of Armenian great composer-musician Komitas.

About Komitas-Կոմիտաս
BIOGRAPHY OF KOMITAS Komitas, a.k.a. Soghomon Soghomonyan, was born on September 26, 1869 in Anatolia, Turkey, in the town of Koutina (Ketaia). His father, Gevorg Soghomonyan was a shoemaker but he also composed songs and had a beautiful voice. The composers mother Tagui - was also singled out for her vivid musical abilities; she was a carpet weaver. Komitass childhood was joyless and full of deprivations. He lost his mother when he was less than one year old, and because his father was too busy his grandmother took care of him. At age 7 Komitas entered the local elementary school. As soon as he finished school his father sent him to Broosa to continue his education. However, he failed and 4 months later he came home having ultimately become an orphan: his father passed away and Soghomon was only 11 years old He was a frail, weak, pale boy, always thoughtful and kind. He was dressed poorly, one of his classmates recalled about Komitas. Soghomon was often seen sleeping on the cold stones of the laundry room. He could sing perfectly, and no wonder in Koutina he was nicknamed a little vagrant singer. For his delightful voice Soghomonyan was also indebted to an event that fundamentally changed the entire course of his life. In 1881 the priest of Koutina, G. Dertsakyan, had to leave for Echmiadzin to be ordained a bishop. At the request of the Catholicos he brought the gifted orphan boy with him to study at the Echmiadzin Church Seminary. Twelve-year old Soghomon was selected out of the other 20 orphans to study at the Seminary. As it was forbidden to speak Armenian at that time the boy spoke Turkish and when being greeted by the Catholicos Gevorg IV, he replied, I dont speak Armenian, if you wish I will sing. Then with his fine soprano voice he sang an Armenian sharakan (a church hymn) without understanding the words. Due to his exclusive aptitude Soghomon overcame all the obstacles in a very short time and perfectly learned Armenian. In 1890 Soghomon was ordained a monk. In 1893 he finished studying at the seminary, then he was ordained a Vardapet (priest) and acquired his new name Komitas - the name of the outstanding poet of VII century, the author of sharakans. At the seminary Komitas was assigned to teach music. Along with teaching, Komitas organized a choir, an orchestra of folk instruments, and treated folk songs; he made the first researches in the field of Armenian Church music. In 1895 Komitas was ordained an archimandrite. In the autumn of the same year he left for Tiflis to study at the musical college. However, when he met the composer Makar Yekmalyan, who had received his education at the conservatory of Petersburg, he changed his mind and started studying a course on harmony by that composer. These studies became the original forerunner and the firm basis for gaining the European technique of composition. The further events of Komitass life had to do with the large music center in Europe Berlin, where he went to study under the protection of the Catholicos, being financed by the largest Armenian oil magnate Alexander Mantashyan. Komitas entered the private conservatory of Professor Richard Schmidt. Within the conservatory Komitas took private classes on singing, elaborating his beautiful voice, fine baritone. Simultaneously with these classes, he also attended the lectures on Philosophy, Esthetics, General History and History of Music. During these academic years he had an opportunity to communicate with European music, continually enriching the supply of knowledge, and engaging in musical criticism. Upon the invitation of the International Music Association he held lectures devoted to the Armenian church and contemporary music in comparison with Turkish, Arabic and Kurdish music. In September 1899 Komitas returned to Echmiadzin and started his musical activity right away. In a short period he radically changed the system of teaching music in the seminary, organized a small orchestra and perfected the performance level of the choir. He visited various regions of Armenia treating and putting down thousands of Armenian, Kurdish, Persian and Turkish songs. He started serious scientific research work, studied Armenian folk and church melodies and worked on the decipherment of Armenian khazzes and on the theory of voices. In various countries of the world Komitas appeared as a performer and propagandist of Armenian music. composer began thinking over big, monumental musical forms. He had in mind to create the musical epic Sasna tsrer and continued working on the opera Anush, which he started back in 1904. Komitas focused on the themes concerning folk music and revealed the content of folk songs. No doubt, such world outlook had to result in an inescapable conflict between Komitas and the Church. Gradually the indifference of new leaders, negative attitude of the backward group of the church figures, gossip and slander increased so much that it poisoned the life of the composer: the man who remained in the imagination of the contemporaries as an absolutely worldly man. The conflict turned so tense that Komitas sent a letter to the Catholicos begging him to release him and let him create and live quietly. This request remained unanswered, and the persecution of Komitas became more obvious. In 1910 Komitas left Etchmiadzin and went to Constantinopole. There he expected to find the environment that would understand him, protect him, and encourage his activity; and here he would be able to fulfill his dreams. Komitas wanted to establish a National Conservatory with which he connected the further destiny of his peoples music. But the composer failed to accomplish this plan (as well as many others). His inspired ideas were only faced with the cold indifference of the local authorities. In Constantinopole Komitas organized a mixed choir of 300 men and called it Gousan. It was very popular. Armenian folk songs constituted most of its concerto program. Komitas would often spend his time touring, giving presentations and lectures; he also acted as a soloist and conductor. He had the baritone, original for its richness and expressiveness. Due to the wide range of his voice Komitas could also sing part of the tenor. He also wonderfully mastered the flute and the piano. He was endowed with great power to influence his audience. The well-known musicians: Vincent DAndy, Gabriel Fore, Camille Sen-Sans fell in love with Komitas creative work. In 1906 after one of the concertos the outstanding French composer Claude Debussi exclaimed excitedly: Brilliant father Komitas! I bow before your musical genius! In Constantinople Komitas could not find any unconditional like-minded people who would help him implement his plans. Moreover, while in Echmiadzin he was together with his native people and close to its living style and art, in Constantinople he was deprived of it. Nevertheless, he continued to work hard. Komitas paid special attention to the composition of church music. His masterpiece Patarag (Liturgy) is written for the male chorus. Musicology was also an important field for him. In Paris at the Conference of the International Music Society he gave two presentations: Armenian Folk Music and On Old and New Notation of Armenian Spiritual Music. These provoked great interest among the participants of the conference. Komitas was also requested to give a spontaneous presentation on the topic: On Time, Place, Accentuation and Rhythm of Armenian Music. In the period of World War I the government of Young Turks initiated their monstrous program on violent and inhumane extermination of part of the Armenian people. In April 1915, Komitas was arrested together with the number of outstanding Armenian writers, publicists, physicians, and lawyers. After the arrest, accompanied by violence, he was deported far in Anatolia where he became a witness of the brutal extermination of the nations bright minds. And in spite of the fact that due to the intervention of influential figures Komitas was returned to Constantinople, the nightmare he had experienced left a deep ineradicable impression on his soul. Komitas remained in seclusion from the outer world, absorbed in his gloomy and heavy thoughts sad and broken. In 1916 Komitas health deteriorated and he was put in a psychiatric hospital. However, there was no hope that he would recover. The medicine was powerless against the destructive disease. The genius of Armenian music found his final shelter in Paris, in the suburban sanatorium Vil-Jouif where he spent almost 20 years of his life. On the 22nd of October the life of the Great Komitas came to an end. In the spring of 1936 his remains were transported to Armenia and buried in Yerevan in the Pantheon of prominent art figures. No less tragic was the destiny of Komitas creative legacy. The majority of his manuscripts were destroyed or lost all over the world The Armenian people found and recognized its soul, its spiritual nature in Komitas songs. Komitas Vardapet is a beginning having no end. He will live through the Armenian people, and they must live through him, now and forever. (Vazgen I, the Catholicos of all Armenians)

Note that I have used “Ինքնակենսագիր” instead of Ինքնակենսագրութիւն from the original source. Why do we have to make ten mile long words a hundred miles with the addition of that stupid suffix of “outyooun”? Why is (ինքնա) կենսագիր not enough?

Also note that the date is unknown except that the last entry refers to 1907.

In addition to the above autobiography, Komitas has added the following footnote;
(This is from his manuscript.)
As we can see the above autobiography is very sardonic and dry chronology. No socio-politico-psycho-cultural commentary. It is almost reminiscent of Soviet historiography. Just dates and places.

Was Komitas going through an “spiritual” and identity crisis?
Below what Arshak Chobanian , the founder, editor and publisher of the literary, aesthetic and public periodical- “Anahit “ (Paris, 1898-1949). He wrote in 1932. Arshak had received a manuscript of Komitas’ autobiography.
Pay special attention where he says- “ In his own handwritten autobiography, the earlier entries are lucid and well organized, towards the end it becomes disjointed and disorganized where even the dates are confused, where all he does is list his works, dry and impersonal, and that towards the end even his handwritten scribbles become virtually illegible”.
Was he disillusioned and morose? Or was he succumbing to the fact that his inner “devils” were being overshadowed and suppressed by the “saints” of the establishment?
Maybe visa versa?
Yes, we know that witnessing the barbarically horrendous, horrible and savage murder of his spiritual brother and sister, his soul mates may have been the “trigger” of shattering his tender heart. But, was it brewing inside him for some time before?
Finally. Was his breakdown a result of persecution by our adversaries, or was it a result of persecution by his own kind and the so called "spiritual brothers" and "superiors"?
How many here remember the days when we swore at an demonized, and persecuted the likes of Kirk Krkorian, for invsting his dollars to the likes of MGM, GM and Chrryster, and Charles Aznavour, singing Chansons, not Sayat Nova, for not devoting their zillion Dollars to the Armenian Cause?
Look at them now. Did we also persecute Komitas for mingling with the “peasants”(paisan, payzan, գեղացի) , ignoring and sneering at the “priests” of the hierarchy/վերապետութիւն?
And now, all of a sudden Komitas becomes a "SAINT" when he was severely admonished for composing " Sona Yar, Sona Yar, Sona Siroun Sona Yar/ Սոնա եար, Սոնա եար, Սոնա, Սիրուն, Սոնա Եար":
Don't make me cry msn-cry.gif !
Should you think this is a polemic against celibacy/schmelibacy baloney. So be it.
Why would not, could not Soghomon unite with his Sweetheart Sona?
Who was Sona?
Let me repeat. celibacy, schmelibacy, kousakron/ kakakron....!!
Why was not Komitas permitted to create his own progeny and clones?!
How many children did he have? How many of his children were SONA YARs , and how many became musical geniuses like him?
======
Here is what Arshak Chobanian wrote.

The more I read the more I am convinced that Komitas’ heart was broken even before the Genocide. I will write an excerpt from an interview that was published in 1914. Where his bitterness and his sense of persecution is thinly disguised.
====
In the meantime…
One of his songs, Antuni that is listed as one the three known as “expatriate -pandoukht-émigré“. The best known is Kroonk, next is Kancheh Kroonk, and the last is Antuni-Homeless. Let us call them as songs of NOSTALGIA-ԿԱՐՕՏ. Why is more than half of our lieteraure and music full of NOSTALGIA?
Let’s take a look and see if it is not in fact autobiographical, where he describes his heart as “a black sea“ surrounded by all the “white“. Or, should it be visa versa? See how he speaks in the first person when he says "my broken heart-ՍԻՐՏԸՍ" . To not forget his other signature song "Hov Areq Sarer- Blow cool you moutains" Where he says " im srtin darman areq= mend, cure my heart".

Some translation.

My heart is like that ruined house,
With broken beams and shaky columns,
Where wild birds build their nests of straw.
Let me throw myself in the river’s waves,
Let me become food to the baby fish.

You! Lad of broken house!

I have seen a black sea, surrounded with white,
The waves hitting each , but mixing not.
Who has ever a two colored sea?
Heart of the homeless is murky and lost.
Ah! My little heart be not wrapped in black!

You! Lad of broken house!
----
PS. MosJan, stay tuned. In the next installemt there will be a surprise for you.

In the meantime. Please note some of the points I have brought up. The more I read, the more I read between the lines the more I become convinced that Komitas’ “spiritual” torture was not so much from “without” but from “within”. Not so much persecution by “mehmet” but more by “mesrop/patriarch”.
Maybe Komitas was lucky enough to (virtually) “die” when he did, and ended up as a saint. Please read between the lines above. See how the Germans deified him while our own demonized him. Otherwise, he may have been defrocked, tarred, feathered and crucified. It reminds us (my own words) of the “Aanavour and Kerkorian Syndrome”. There was a time when Aznavour and Kerkrian were the most hated names. Simply because neither of them, Aaznavour for not singning “dali lolo”, and Kirk for not contributing to either the Diocese or the Prelacy, until, in both cases, Armenia became a COUNTRY, not a place of “dali lolo”, and in Kirk’s case, not a diocese or prelacy.**
** It seems Kirk is neither a diocese-ian or a prolecy-ian. Some say he is Catholic, others say he is Episcopalian, or even a nonbelieving heathen. What is the difference? Is it better to be a diocese-ian /prolecy-ian hypocrite or a heathen real Armenian patriot?
It never ceases to amaze me when during his worldly life Komotas was so persecuted and demonized by our own. And now. After so many years, we suddenly dicover that he was a saint, whther he composed songs about Sona Yar, or Qeler Tsoler Im Yar@- Walk and shine my lover.
Who was "Sona Yar"? Who was "qeler tsoler im Yar@"?
Celibacy? My big Armenian foot/nose!
Why could not Komitas/Soghomon get together with his sweetheart "Sona Yar"?
Why could not Soghomon and Sona make "music" together?
Is it because Komitas was so puritanically naive to know thatm after a few years Patriarch Yegisheh of Jerusalem would have so many mistresses, and fathered several children, or that the present Amenayn Hayots was/is Louise Simone's "wonder boy"?
Did Komitas live lomg enough to know what "Mercedes/BMW/Rolls Royce or Cadillac" means?

From that interview published in 1914 at the Azatamart in Polis.
When asked about what instrument is the most genuine Armenian .. Talking about what he had said during his lecture series in Europe…Throughout the entire interview, no matter how asked he never speaks about his trials and tribulations at home, it must be extremely painful, except in very curt and laconic way, but rather emphasizes his triumphs and successes in Europe, the accolades and adulations showered on him there.

-Here he uses Փող/pogh in a generic sense as a eind instrument, what he means is sring/սրինգor even դուդուկ
-Նուագուրդ = orchestra
I had not heard this but according to some source, it is a nynonym to bagpipe and it has several spelling variations, the most common being “tkzar/տկզար“. It is based on “tik/տիկ” goatskin, and, of course , the jor/chor/zor ending is based on sound.
===
Below, reference is to an “scandal” in Bolis. Above we saw how Komitas was reprimanded by the Patriarch for performing church music in public places and theaters. This speaks about the protest by the church choir for his use of the gramaphone/phonograph, i.e that "instrument of the devil(?)"
Q-Իսկ ինչ պիտի ըսէիք , սիրելի վարպետ, այն վլվլուկներուն առթիւ, զոր ցոյց տուաւ հոս տիրացուներու ճահիճը:Կակնարկեմ այն տխմարպայքարին , զոր պոլսահայ տիրացուներ, կրօնական ժողովին անիմաստ իրարարնցումէն քաջալերուած, բացին ձեզի դէմ, գրամաֆոնի ծանօթ քնդրոյն առթիւ:…..(Here he tries to bypass the incident and instead speaks about his successes in Europe)լ

* Earlier in the interview he refers to the absence of representatives from our neighboring people and how the committees would not let even the Greeks to present lectures about their native music, he also smentions the furks, he asszis, Georgians and Persians and, as to the so called Greek music he says that they had lost all track of their native classical music and that the only source to it would be found in Armenian archives preserved in the form of the KHAZ.
====
Where is Hagopn? He knows all about the KHAZ.
How about our resident piano teacher..Ani?

Komitas has been seriously nominated for a well deserved sainthood on several occasions.
Yes. He is a saint, not only because of his unparalleled contribution to our cultural and spiritual life, but also because of his saintly endurance in the face of so much persecution.
The below passage in the Gospels about “prophets being rejected in their own village” may have been written with Komitas in mind.
Matt.. 13;
57] And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.

What we know about Komitas is highly romanticized and sanitized. And, as mentioned above he does not get deeply emotional in his autobiography, which is merely a dry chronology. No personal emotion or socio-psychological commentary. We know all the romantic episodes of his life, as how he was orphaned, was brought to Ejmiatsin, doted upon and promoted by the likes of Khrimian Hayrik, yet we know very little, very little is said about his tortured life at the seminary, where some of his superiors were leery of his “turkish” origin, and the envy and jealousy of his fellow classmates, once again teasing, bullying and taunting him for his “turkish” origin and his success, as how he became the “teachers’ pet” so to speak, the subject of admiration of his teachers. He does speak of those horrible days. He, consciously or subconsciously suppresses those memories and only speaks about his triumphs and successes in Europe. Never speaks about his horrible days at Ejmiatsin. Only when he asks his superior to release him of his obligations and move to Polis(Europe). However, the persecution does not stop, as we will see how the Patriarch and the church elite treated, once again persecuted him.
His sin?
Playing Sacred Church Music in public places and theaters. Employing that “instrument of satan” , the gramaphone to record his own voice and the voice of his choir.
No wonder he only speaks about his successes and triumphs in the European capitals, as how the the masters of music of the day were enamored with him, so much so that some of those masters began attending the Armenian Church on some Sundays to hear more of the wonderful music of Armenia. This was in 1914. They asked him to come back to the next conference in another three years, which as we know would not happened, as by then Komitas had lost all his genius mind.

Komitas the saint who wrote so many religious pieces, including a full blown Patarak?
Or is it Komitas the devil who wrote “Sona Yar” and Qeler Tsoler Im Yar@ ( Let my sweetheart “Walk and Shimmer“. I.e Let me enjoy the ups and downs of her hips.
Komitas was a saint. He stuck to his vow of celibacy, unlike many that we know.
Why was not he allowed to marry his “Sona Yar”, and let to enjoy her beautiful hips of “Qeler Tsoler”??
Pardon me. I get highly emotional here.
Why are not the best of us, our geniuses forbidden to reproduce and procreate genius clones of themselves? Celibacy? Says who? That misogynically, homophilic misanthrope?
Most of this material is from a program booklet of a concert at the NY Lincoln Center’s Avery Fischer Hall (that I attended) 1986 dedicated to the fiftieth anniversary of Komitas’ demise( 1935), which was conceived and executed, presided by the then Blessed Memory Prelate Abp . Mesrop Ashjian , a deserving intellect in his own right. Yet, with all due respects. Did Abp. Mesrop know that his predecessors, be they in Ejmiatsin or Polis subjected Komitas to such a persecution, enough to lose his wits. Yes, w know that Komitas lost his mind as a result of his witness of the savage murder of his soul mates. Who would not?
Can we speak?
Did not all that persecution by his own ilk have an effect?

Komitas’ Correspondences, to and from.
So far no one has yet shown us what caused Komitas’ loss of “spirit”. Yes, we know that his witness of the savage murder of his soul mates may have been an immediate cause/trigger, however no one has written about his “agony” until that point. Remember that Komitas had an extremely fragile and tender heart. Read some of letters below.
Below some excerpts, read the rest here;
http://culture.azg.a...&num=2009101002
(Note. Somewhere the editors use the word «տվայտանք/ տուայտանք» that some translate as “pain/torture” my interpretation would be “agony”, just as the biographical epic about Michelangelo was titled the “Agony and Ecstasy“; http://en.wikipedia....Ecstasy_(novel).
Who will qrite about the “agony and ecstasy “of Komitas?
------
Here we see that the definitive and final edition about Komitas’ 552 page-16 illustrations correspondences has been published. Who will publish the pro and con editorials of the time, be they in Ejmiatsin, Bolis or Europe have said?

Why do I get all misty writing these lines? My only wish is that he would have had the courage to disavow his vow of celibacy, marry his lover sweetheart Sona Siroun Sona(yar) and live happily ever after.

Thank you Johannes. I stole the following letter addressed to HH Matheos Izmirian from another site.

IZMIRLIAN, MATEOS (Constantinople 1848 – Echmiadzin 1911) Ordained a celibate priest in 1869. Primate of the Armenians of Egypt 1886–90. Returned to Constantinople in 1890; elected Armenian Patriarch of Constantinople, in 1894; known as the Iron Patriarch; supported the Armenian revolutionary movement. Exiled to Jerusalem by the Ottoman authorities in 1896; returned to Constantinople in 1908 on the proclamation of the constitution; re-elected patriarch (1908–9). In 1908 he was also elected Catholicos of all Armenians at Echmiadzin (as Mateos II) in which post he served from 1909 until his death.

More than a hundred years ago St. Komitas talks about “rabiz” and rabizing of our Sacred Church Music. Any wonder why he was persecuted by clergy and lay alike!Observe what he says- highlights by me.

PS. We already know that Komitas was in the process of rendering Toumanian’s Anush to music, which was not completed. In another letter to Hovhannes T. he alludes to it and kind of explains why it was not completed. Btw Komitas b. Sept. 26 1869 and Toumanian , b. July 19, 1869 were brothers in spirit.

This article is “pirated” from another Forum posted by a friend of ours.
I am sure he does not mind me reposting it here.
A new book by Gurgen Gasparian has been published in Beirut , where the editor has tried and compile all the letters by and to Komitas. Among the many, to and from fellow intellectuals, the likes of Toumanian, Chobanian and friends like Miss Margarit. The most revealing are those written to the Katholikos Madteos Izmirian**, where when we read between the lines reinforces my contention that Komitas was deeply wounded and was in a spiritual and intellectual crisis. long before that “mortal” wound.
**Amenayn Hayots Katholikos Izmirian (Bolis 1845-Ejmiatsin 1910) served only one year in that position (1908-1910)
http://www.aztagdail...?ID=40220&num=1
Where the author has raised the number of letters from the since known 160 to 184.
Despite all the calls to concecrate Komitas as a Saint has fallen on deaf ears. Does Ejmiatsin know more about him than we?
Was Komitas a "closet protestant"?
I know. know! Just as Komitas I am "blowing in the wind"?

"Blowin' In The Wind"

How many roads most a man walk down
Before you call him a man ?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand ?
Yes, how many times must the cannon balls fly
Before they're forever banned ?
The answer my friend is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the win.....

To follow.

In this first letter he expresses his consternations and concerns about how our Sacred Church Music has deteriorated to level where the deacons, the choirmasters and the choristers who, the night before had been singing at oghi parties sing in a way totally foreign to our traditional sacred music, singing with furko-Arabo-Russo-Parsi style.
Have things really changed since then? I he talking about today’s rabiz-rubbish?
I have, beside my instinct to strangle those “singers” I have had the urge to crawl under the pews.
I may have many stories, but in the meantime listen to this and tell us how that idiot Onnik Dinkjian sings in Armenian aside from a few interspersed Armenian words?
How is he different from the likes of mehmet osmanoghlu?
Disgusting!! What a disgrace!!!. Komitas must be turning in his tomb.

Compare it to this by that angel Isabelle Droshian, and send me ten boxes of Kleenex.

I had not seen the below article, neither anything to the affect. It was just my gut feeling putting together bits and pieces. Perhaps I read too much into Anlreli Zangakatun. I suspect Sevak may have had similar feelings. Speaking of which one wonders what secrets are buried in the archives of Ejmiatsin and the Patriarchate .
Above we spoke about his disillusionment and the virtual falling out with the “establishment”. We also talked about his struggle with celibacy, see Sona Yar above. And now we see this.

Who and how was his European sojourn subsidized?

But Etchmiadzin was a small world, and he needed to spread his wings. He went to study in Berlin, and then moved to Paris, where he founded a choir and began to attract big audiences for his folksong recitals….

He also courted trouble through his relationship with Armenian singer Margaret Babayan, with whom he snatched an improbable holiday on the Isle of Wight. It will never be known if they had a love affair, but his letters suggest as anguished a wrestle with his soul as over his never-ending battle with the church traditionalists. He was at once a sensualist and an ascetic: he wanted to submit to discipline, but couldn't deny his artistic calling.

Komitas Vardapet: Forgotten Folk Hero

11:35, 22 April, 2011
By Michael Church
Sunday 24 April is Easter Day, but for Armenians it is also genocide remembrance day.
This is when Armenians all over the world will gather to commemorate the anniversary of the 1915 genocide in which 1.5 million Armenians in Turkey were either slaughtered, or died on forced marches into exile. For Armenians, music is memory.
And whenever they gather to honour their dead, the songs they sing are by the composer who speaks for the soul of their nation, Komitas Vardapet. He himself was a victim of the 1915 persecution, and though he survived physically, he was driven into madness by it. Outside Armenia he, too, has been swept under the carpet of history.
Komitas's output was modest: 80 choral works and songs, arrangements of the Armenian mass, and some dances for piano. But as his better-known compatriot Aram Khachaturian acknowledged, he singlehandedly laid the foundations for Armenia's classical tradition. And as a collector and arranger of folksongs, he did for Armenia what Bartók did for Hungary, turning simple material into bewitchingly sophisticated polyphony. After a Komitas concert in Paris, Claude Debussy declared that on the basis of a single song, he deserved to be recognised as a great composer. Yet many classical musicians barely recognise his name.
I first became aware of Komitas's existence when recording the Armenian Chamber Choir in Yerevan in 2001. I was intrigued by the songs' vibrant strangeness: folk melodies so deftly arranged that the raw beauty of the originals glowed the more brightly.
Soghomon Soghomonyan – his original name – was born in 1869 to Armenian parents in Turkey, where the Christian minority endured routine discrimination. His parents (who both died when he was young) were noted singers: he inherited their gift and was talent-spotted at 12 by an Armenian bishop, and enrolled at the Etchmiadzin seminary near Yerevan. There, he was the class comedian who could mimic the songs he found in villages on the slopes of Mount Ararat: even in his teens he was a pioneer ethnomusicologist. Using the notation he had learned in the Armenian liturgy, he wrote down what he heard, devised three-part arrangements, and formed a student choir to sing them.
Soghomonyan's appetite for songs was voracious – one day, he noted with pride, he collected 34. His account of the ploughing song he found in the Armenian village of Lori reflects a remarkable ear: in his transcription, music, movement, and complex social relationships are seamlessly interwoven. In another village, he observed a girl singing to her dead mother: her plangently disordered song, he wrote, "expresses the sadness of her lot, and her inner world. If other orphans had heard it, they would have joined in. But after a while, that song would be forgotten. Because for the peasant, creating a song is as ordinary and natural as casual conversation is for the rest of us." As an encapsulation of the essence of folk music, this could still not be bettered.
Meanwhile he was trying to crack the code of "neume" notation, denoting changes of pitch, used in Armenian liturgical chants in the early Middle Ages. Altered in oral transmission over the centuries, Soghomonyan was determined to rediscover their original form.
At 25, Soghomonyan was ordained a Vardapet – a celibate priest – and renamed himself Komitas after a seventh-century religious poet. But Etchmiadzin was a small world, and he needed to spread his wings. He went to study in Berlin, and then moved to Paris, where he founded a choir and began to attract big audiences for his folksong recitals. Regarded as the musical voice of Armenia, he was now a European celebrity, but his secular performances of sacred Armenian music put him on a collision course with his church.
Komitas went on to found expatriate Armenian choirs in Alexandria and Constantinople, where even Turks began to celebrate him. This was grimly ironic, for in 1913, when Komitas and a group of fellow intellectuals were embarking on an oral-history project to celebrate the Armenian community in Turkey, Turkish Muslims were encouraged by politically insecure rulers to loot Christian Armenian villages and murder the inhabitants. Turkey's Armenians were ghettoised, disarmed (even of kitchen knives), and finally, on 24 April 1915, deported en masse. Komitas was among 291 prominent figures trucked off into the mountains. When the secret police came for him, he submitted to his arrest with a Kafkaesque fatalism.
The rest of his story has terrible pathos. At first he was the comforter of his friends as they were shunted from one town to another, with word filtering out that they were destined to be shot. One day he was brutalised by a guard, and something in him snapped: from that point on, though he was among the few who were reprieved (after intervention by the American ambassador, one of his fans) he retreated into a paranoid world, spending his remaining 20 years in an asylum.
Post-traumatic stress disorder was clearly the trigger for Komitas's breakdown, but his biographer, Rita Soulahian Kuyumjian, argues that its real roots lay in his doomed struggle to "preserve" his dead parents through the songs they sang, and to do the same for two ecclesiastical father figures by cracking the code of the neumes. Dr Vrej Nersessian, priest at the St Yeghiche Armenian church in Kensington, agrees: "Komitas's real tragedy was the loss of his research. His will was broken." In Nersessian's view, it would be an insult to Komitas's memory if he were consigned, as he often is, to a box marked "Armenian genocide victims".
Komitas claimed to have cracked the code of the neumes, but his key is lost. Scholars still search for what could open a fascinating window on remote musical history. Meanwhile, by refusing to recognise any divide between the folk musics of Turkey and Armenia, Komitas showed a way in which the antagonism between the two could be dissolved. But his choral works are his monument.
Armenia's leading composer, Tigran Mansurian, recently wrote a cello concerto with the richly symbolic title, Where Is Your Brother Abel? As a child of Armenian genocide survivors, Mansurian is still pursuing closure, and his guide in this pursuit is Komitas. "His garden of sounds," says Mansurian, "covers a vast territory in time, stretching across millennia." But where, in the garden of western classical music, is Komitas?

PS. Some time ago one of us asked what heretic means.

From the Greek Haereticus= Literally, “freedom to choose”.

Definition of HERETIC
1 dissenter from established religious dogma; especially : a baptized member of the Roman Catholic Church who disavows a revealed truth .
Examples of HERETIC
The church regards them as heretics.
<Galileo was condemned as a heretic for supporting Copernicus's thesis that the earth revolves around the sun and not vice versa
Հերետիկոս = Հերձուածող.
Հերձ means to dissent, to separate, to tear away

A powerful, if highly emotional article in AZG - Culture..

THAT(bread) CRUMB IS NOT APPRECIATION!!!
Attributed to quote by Komitas himself.

It is about the time when the Armenian community of Paris were holding fundraising events to subsidize his “hospital” expenses rather than organizing festivals to celebrate his genius.

We see below, whereas Komitas was recognized by his fellow soul mate European musicians a genius, to the average Armenian he was just a “mad monk” in need of “bread”.
Did he have deep down “reservations” about the sincerity his fellow Armenians?
Below we also read that he suffered PTSD, paranoia and persecution syndrome.

Is his masterpiece ԱՆՏՈՒՆԻ/Antuni/HOMELESS about himself?
Where he says "My heart is like that ruined house"?

I would still like to see a retro psycho-analysis of his condition. How many of such "psychos", on a daily diet of Lithium amd more live among us today? I will abstain from naming names. :P Be my guest. Don't take my word for it. Search and see how many times it was stated that the Mamokoneans were Chinese and that the Bakratuni's were in fact "bakrat-jew"-nis.
