Phase 2 of COVID-19 Vaccine Trials May Begin in Spring, Moderna’s Afeyan Says
April 3, 2020

Noubar-Afeyan-3.jpg

Modenra’s Noubar Afeyan

The first human trial of a vaccine to prevent the coronavirus could advance to the next step this spring, Moderna Chairman Noubar Afeyan said Thursday.

“It’s difficult to put a specific date on things just because it’s a very dynamic situation,” Afeyan told CNBC. “We’ve entered phase 1 trials. … We’ll enter hopefully phase 2 of trials… we expect that to happen in the spring, perhaps early summer.”

“And success there will hopefully lead us to phase 3 trials,” Afeyan added on “The Exchange.”
Moderna partnered with the National Institutes of Health to accelerate the development of the vaccine to prevent COVID-19. Phase 1 human trials of the potential vaccine began in the Seattle area in mid-March.

Afeyan expressed hope that the first results of COVID-19 vaccine testing to come in spring.

Afeyan, who is also CEO of venture capital firm Flagship Pioneering, helped co-found Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Moderna in 2010.

Afeyan said he expects other companies working on a vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson, could also be successful in developing an effective one.

“We hope that everybody succeeds because the worldwide demand for these types of interventions is far in excess of what any one player can deliver,” he said.

Johnson & Johnson said Monday that it hoped to begin human trials of its experimental COVID-19 vaccine by September. Other companies are attempting to develop a drug to treat COVID-19.

ArmInfo. Scientists at the Institute of Molecular Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia have developed and will soon begin production of tests for the diagnosis of coronavirus infection. This was announced live on Facebook by Prime  Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashiyan. He noted that according to the  leadership of the institute, the institute can produce up to 100  anti-coronavirus tests daily.

He noted that the government has recently given special importance to  the financing of science, including applied science. In the budgets  of 2019 and 2020, the government increased funds for applied science  by more than 10-fold, to 600-700 million drams.  About 300 million  drams were spent on the purchase of laboratory equipment alone.

Only 11 new coronavirus cases recorded in one day, signaling “unprecedented” dynamics in Armenia

1011255.jpg 11:01, 6 April, 2020

YEREVAN, APRIL 6, ARMENPRESS. 11 new COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed in Armenia in the past 24 hours, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said on social media, signaling what appears to be an abrupt decrease of daily new cases, given that the previous daily cases were 52 (April 4).

“Out of 263 tests only 11 were positive. This is an unprecedented number for the past weeks. This means that the measures, which are causing numerous inconveniences, have begun giving results. The restrictions must be maintained stricter during this week. In that case, our chances for starting to think about easing the restrictions from next Monday will grow,” he said, calling on citizens to strictly adhere to the lockdown restrictions this week.

“Today’s number are giving hope, but we must certainly analyze tomorrow’s figures also,” he said.

The Prime Minister said that a 68-year-old coronavirus patient has died, becoming Armenia’s eighths COVID-19 fatality. The patient had underlying health conditions, he said.

The total cumulative number of COVID-19 infections in Armenia is 833, as of April 6, 11:00 GMT+4.

62 patients have recovered, 8 have died. The number of active cases is 763.

Turkey’s support to Armenia in fighting COVID-19 not on the agenda – MFA

Turkey’s support to Armenia in fighting the coronavirus is not on the agenda, Spokesperson for the Armenian Foreign Ministry Anna Naghdalyan has said.

The comments come after the Armenian Patriarchate of Costantinople said in a press release Turkey was offering assistance to Armenia in fighting the virus.

“We are familiar with the Patriarchate’s press release on the phone conversation with the Turkish President. As a third country, we would refrain from commenting on official information. In any case, there is no such issue on the agenda,” Naghdalyan said in comments to Armenpress.

She said the return of Armenian citizens from Istanbul has been organised in agreement with the Turkish and Georgian authorities.

“Armenia is taking all measures to organize the return of its nationals, and preference will be given to those in hardest-hit regions,” the Spokesperson noted.

The Foreign Ministry is financing the transportation of about 70 citizens through the Georgian territory. All citizens will be subject to 14-day quarantine upon arrival.

Aznavour Foundation contributes to fight against COVID-19

The Aznavour Foundation, too, joins the fight against COVID-19, supporting the Armenian Ministry of Health, it said in a statement, which reads:

"The COVID-19 outbreak in the beginning of 2020 has already affected more than one million people in every corner of the world. It is a historic disaster that disrupted every aspect of our lives, including health care systems, education, tourism, and many others.

“Today, all countries are facing challenges in the field of healthcare. However, we are certain that together we can overcome this disease by being more united, more caring and more responsible. Many years ago, Charles Aznavour stood by Armenia and its people in a difficult time and commenced the humanitarian activities. Pursuant to Charles Aznavour’s values, the Aznavour Foundation joins the worldwide fight against COVID-19,” highlighted Nicolas Aznavour, Co-founder and Chairman of Board of the Aznavour Foundation.

In close cooperation with Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia, the Aznavour Foundation has enabled the purchase of more than 5,000 N95 masks and 1,000 protective jumpsuits for the doctors and nurses, as well as the delivery of more than 7,000 litters of disinfectant to medical care facilities, which will suffice for the 2 months needs and thus create a safer environment for specialists who have been working with exceptional dedication and altruism for months, saving many lives.

The Aznavour Foundation expresses its gratitude to all health personnel and volunteers who risk their lives to save others and will allow us to overcome this disease.

This initiative of the Aznavour Foundation was made possible with the generous support of the Foundations “Armenia” and “Philippossian et Pilossian” from Switzerland, Armen Grishkyan and other donors who wished to remain anonymous.

Please follow the instructions in your countries to keep safe and save lives!”
