Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan today received Jewish historian Yair
Auron, now visiting Yerevan for the launch of the Armenian translation
of his work Banality of Indifference.

In his book, Auron states that the Genocide of Armenians was a
prelude to the Jewish Holocaust and bemoans the behaviour of the
Israeli government in not recognizing the 1915 Genocide.

President Sargsyan thanked Auron on the occasion of the publication
of the Armenian version of his work and for his efforts towards the
international recognition of the Genocide

At a press conference in Yerevan, Auron said, "By failing to recognize
the genocides inflicted on other nations, we demean the Holocaust. We
are obliged to respect the memories of other peoples and must discuss
the Armenian Genocide on the parliamentary level," Yair Auron told
a press conference in Yerevan.

Auron has been joined in his trip to Armenia by ex-Israeli
parliamentarian Yair Tzaban.

Zori Balayan has written the introduction to the book which has
been released due to the assistance of Moscow-based businessman
Karen Baghdasaryan.

JEWS SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRST TO RECOGNIZE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE - YAIR AURON (PHOTO)

July 17, 2013 | 16:16

YEREVAN. - Many Jewish intellectuals have stood with the Armenian
people, sympathized with the pain and tragedy of the Armenians,
and showed an interest in the problems of our people.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan noted the aforesaid during his talk
Wednesday with Yair Auron, renowned Israeli historian, scholar and
expert specializing on Holocaust and Genocide studies.

To note, Armenian capital city Yerevan was the venue recently for
the official presentation of the Armenian version of Auron's book,
entitled The Banality of Indifference, which is about the Jewish
Holocaust and the Armenian Genocide.

Sargsyan congratulated the historian on the Armenian publication of
his book, and thanked Auron for his invaluable work and contribution.

As per the President, it is impossible to count all the prominent
Jewish intellectuals, including Auron, who have reflected on the
Armenian Genocide.

In his turn, Yair Auron thanked President Sargsyan for the warm words
and the love and appreciation which the Armenian people have showed him
during his current visit to Armenia. The Israeli historian stressed
that he shares the double pain of the Armenian nation: Being subjected
to genocide, and the policy of denial of this crime.

In Auron's conviction, the Jews should have been the first people to
recognize the Armenian Genocide.
He noted, however, that significant
positive changes have taken place among Israel's civil society,
and with respect to this matter.

ISRAELI SCHOLAR YAIR AURON ABOUT ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RECOGNITION AND THE IMPRESSIONS FROM ARTSAKH

On a three-day visit to Artsakh Israeli genocide scholar Yair Auron
had meetings with officials, youth and soldiers. He met with reporters
in Stepanakert to share the impressions. The scholar confesses he
didn't know much about the Artsakh war.

As a genocide expert, Auron does not accept describing the events in
Khojalu, as well as Sumgait and Baku as "genocide." "Some people say
the events in Khojalu constituted genocide, but they do not comply
with the classical definition of genocide." As for the events in
Sumgait and Baku, the scholar said he has not conducted research on
these concrete cases, but considers they should be called "massacres."

Yair Auron confessed that on the first day of the visit the impressions
were not that bright, but everything changed over the next two days.

"My impression on the first day was that you are week. Now I'm
confident you are very strong, strong with your spirit."

"I admire your struggle for self-determination," he said. "This is
your right and I with you every success," the scholar added.

"After I met with the soldiers, I saw they are ready to continue the
struggle with the same spirit. They have the resoluteness to fight,
to master their own destiny. I admire that determination."

Mr. Auron said he's ashamed for the fact of Israel selling arms to
Azerbaijan, knowing those will be used against the people of Karabakh.

"I go mad, when I think these weapons are used against you," the
scholar said.

According to Yair Auron, upon his return to Israel he will continue
the struggle for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Besides, he
will talk to his friends about Artsakh, its people and their struggle.

He plans to visit Nagorno Karabakh again in summer.
