What do you folks think about this? Is it an overall pro or con for Armenia? More import-export/tourism for Armenia; But can Turks slowly start purchasing Armenian estate? Slowly populating and occupying Armenia in case a war breaks out with Azerbaijan and Turks ambush Armenia easier? There are so many factors considering this scenario; What do you think will happen?

Makes me nervous. What if there were a thousand armed tourists inside Armenia and there was and attack at the border. I remember watching dump trucks, said to be, coming in from Iran with sand. That seemed a little funny. But people, cars truck and busses coming in from turkey would be a big worry to me. I don't know what others think.

They have attacked us from the first time we met them.

Yeah, I understand what you mean, it is pretty hard to trust a government after what happened in 1915. But anyway, I do not know if it is a good or bad thing but turns out these claims are not real. At least that is what the Turkish government is saying. This was simply published in the Turkish newspaper stating that is what Erdogen wanted. From my own understanding, I am guessing they simply want to defame Erdogen's image since he is running for president soon.

WHY TURKEY DAILY REPORTED THAT ARMENIAN-TURKISH BORDER WILL OPEN?

July 04, 2014 | 15:55

ISTANBUL. - Turkey wants to convey to the world the message that
once PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan is elected President, there may be some
radical changes in the country's foreign policy, and in connection
with the most complicated issues.

Ara Kocunyan, the Chief Editor of Jamanak Armenian daily of Istanbul,
told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am commenting on the Turkish
Taraf daily's news that Turkey plans to open the Armenian-Turkish
border in September.

"There are regular conversations about the opening of the
Armenian-Turkish border, but it is an unprecedented phenomenon to
speak about it on the threshold of the presidential election.

"The Turkish paper speaks about preparations [for the border's
opening]. These were spoken about in the past, too, but now it is
presented against a political backdrop [and] directly represented as
an instruction given by PM Erdogan.

"It is interesting because, until now, very Erdogan's position was
presented as an obstacle against the opening of the Armenian-Turkish
border. But this time they speak about an instruction of the PM.

"Such an important foreign policy decision in the lead-up to the
presidential election in Turkey is not a subject of bringing dividends
to PM Erdogan. But at least the Turkish side wants to show the world
that during Erdogan's presidency there will be improvements in Turkey's
foreign policy," Kocunyan added.

REPORT ON OPENING OF ARMENIA-TURKEY BORDER PIECE OF MISINFORMATION - OPINIONS

19:28 * 04.07.14

Considering Recep Tayyip Erdogan's political personality, as well as
the upcoming presidential election in Turkey, he is most unlikely
to sacrifice nationalists' votes and open the border with Armenia
expert in Turkic studies Ruben Melkonyan told Tert.am as he commented
thereport by the Taraf newspaper.

"In our age of infowars the mass media are used for addressing
messages and, sometimes, for probing into the stance of the public
and political circles. This statement raises certain questions as the
report says that Erdogan has issued an instruction for the opening
of the border. However, the opening of the border is supposed to be
preceded by certain procedures - the ratification of protocols and
establishment of diplomatic relations," Melkonyan said.

This should mainly be considered in the context of infowars and,
sometimes, disinformation. The ground for this opinion is the
Turkish PM's political personality, especially the possibility of
the upcoming presidential election dealing a blow to his political
rating, as his rivals will make use of it to win over nationalistic
and anti-Armenian voters.

Melkonyan does not rule out Erdogan's rivals using it to "entrap" him.

Expert in Turkish studies Hakob Chakryan believes that the Taraf
report is misinformation. Even if such an initiative were undertaken,
Turks will derail it.

Turkish press also notes that Turkey will open the border under the
US pressure. But the border opened under pressure can easily be closed
again or resistance can be shown, with new problems for Armenia.

As to whether it may be a step on the threshold of the centennial of
the Armenian Genocide in Ottoman Turkey, Chakryan said:

"Since 1991, Turkey's policy toward Armenia has not seen any progress.

They keep on speaking of opening the borders, but they start
bargaining over it and the issue is closed. I do not think Turkey has
a sincere intention to open the border. Turkey is pursuing a clearly
anti-Armenian policy now irrespective of whether it will open the
border. They should begin with establishing interstate relations,
and the border will mechanically be opened."

In any case, the Turkish foreign office is directing the mass media,
the expert said.

Head of the ARF-D Hay Dat office Giro Manoyan told Tert.am that the
likely reason for the report by the Taraf newspaper was to discredit
the Turkish premier. The newspaper has problems with the Turkish
authorities and rumor has it may be shut down.

As to any links with the approaching centennial of the Armenian
Genocide in Ottoman Turkey, Manoyan said, "Everything's possible."

Expert on opening of Armenian-Turkish border

I am doubtful that the Armenian-Turkish border will be opened in September, but I have no doubt that the Turkish authorities have such plans on the eve of the Armenian Genocide centenary since it will be a nice gesture showing the world that Turkey has no problem with Armenians, Turkish studies expert Artak Shakaryan told reporters Monday, commenting on Turkish media reports saying that the Armenian-Turkish border will be opened soon.
In Shakaryan’s words, currently, for Turkey, it is easier to open the border than to ratify the Armenian-Turkish Protocols.
“Erdogan cannot even put the Protocols to vote since he does not have the sufficient number of MPs, while opening the border is easier since there is a possibility to close it after some time on any pretext when the noise around the Genocide centenary will be in the past,” he noted.
According to the expert, the Armenian side should not be satisfied with the opening of the border, but should demand diplomatic relations and other actions to reinforce the decision to open the border.
“We must show the world that the opening of the border is a positive but not sufficient move,” he said, adding that the opening of the border will not solve any economic problem and besides, it is known that Azerbaijan is opposed to the opening of the border.

If Turkey ever opens their borders with Armenia, in my opinion, Turkey will still do whatever possible to get rid of Armenian Republic and united with Azerbaijan. Armenians cannot trust Turks or some other Muslim groups for one too many reasons.
