Khojali : Pretext to Incite Ethnic Hate Against Armenians in Turkey

By Contributor on February 22, 2015
http://armenianweekl...inst-armenians/

On Feb. 20, the Human Rights Association of Turkey issued a statement
in response to a planned anti-Armenian demonstration in Istanbul,
under the banner, `Demonstrations Condemning the Khojali Genocide and
Armenian Terror.' The Human Rights Association states that it has
petitioned the Istanbul Governorate ahead of the Feb. 22 protest,
which has already given rise to anti-Armenian sentiments.

The full text of the statement is printed below:

Khojali : Pretext to Incite Ethnic Hate Against Armenians in Turkey

On 19 February 2015, the Human Rights Association presented the
Governorate of Istanbul with a petition warning the officials that the
`Demonstrations Condemning the Khojali Genocide and Armenian Terror,'
to be held in Kadıköy, Istanbul on Feb. 22, have incited ethnic hatred
from the moment they were preannounced.

The demonstrations are organized by the Association of Reformist Youth
in Azerbaijan, with support from the Turkish Hearths Youth Branches
and the Turanist Movement Platform.

As our petition to the Governorate reports, militants from the
Turanist Movement Platform photograph and publish their public
displays including graffiti, banners, and posters in central locations
in Istanbul. In the declaration that they distribute in shops and that
we enclose with this petition, they incite violence by labeling
activists against racism as `terrorists.' Persons who somehow
perpetually remain `unidentified' write racist graffiti, such as
`You're Either Turkish or Bastards' or `You Are All Armenian, All
Bastards,' on church walls in Kadıköy, in addition to hanging flags
depicting the ultra-nationalist symbol (mythical wolf).

Protesters chanted `You are all Armenians, you are all bastards'
during the Khojali demonstrations on Taksim Square on Feb. 26, 2012.

Khojali is but a pretext for the real purpose of inciting ethnic hate
and hostility against the Armenians of Turkey, as globally observed in
the course of the Khojali demonstrations on Taksim Square on Feb. 26,
2012. Right before the eyes of the Minister of the Interior, on the
same square where he was making a speech, the demonstrators displayed
banners saying `You Are All Armenians, You are All Bastards,' while
shouting hate-filled slogans against Armenians.

The corrupt and shady collaboration between Azerbaijan and Turkey thus
comes to fruition: The organizers are able to brandish their schemes
for Feb. 22 because they have no doubt that the officials of the
Republic of Turkey will lavish them with endless tolerance.

In the petition we presented on record, we reminded the Governorate
that the racism displayed both at the identically themed
demonstrations of 2012 and at the preannouncement phase of the Feb. 22
demonstrations for `Condemning Armenian Terror' constitutes a crime
per article 216 of the Turkish Penal Code on `public humiliation or
incitement to hatred and enmity.' We also emphasized that incitement
to racist violence violates article 14 of the European Convention on
Human Rights, which prohibits discrimination.

We have requested that the Office of the Governor take preventative
measures against slogans, writings, banners, and threats inciting
ethnic hate or enmity; that, in cases where they occur, all legal
proceedings mechanisms be activated immediately after the
demonstrations, and that the state fulfill all its responsibilities
with utmost efficacy.

We now publicly reiterate our warning: You, officials who refrain from
criminalizing racist slogans on church walls, who officially or
unofficially permit protests and demonstrations preannounced by such
slogans, if you do not enforce the law, you will become partners in
the crime that is being publicly preannounced.

We address the prime minister: You have just paid your tributes to
Hrant Dink, calling him `a venerable Anatolian public intellectual.'
Have you forgotten that banners saying `Damned Be Hrant Dink' were
displayed right in front of his newspaper headquarters? Do you not
remember that on Feb. 23, 2014, a group, including a number of
Azerbaijanis, and calling itself `The Soldiers of Alpaslan TürkeÅ?,'
materialized in front of the Agos newspaper at whose doorstep Dink had
been murdered? Their banners read, `Long Live Ogün Samasts, Damned be
Hrant Dinks'We Salute Azerbaijan and Continue the Fight.' We had filed
a criminal complaint then as well. Your prosecutors did not lift a
finger.

The so-called NGOs of the state of Azerbaijan, where oppositional
journalists are left to rot in prison and honest public intellectuals
are abandoned to lifelong threats of lynching, we ask you: What are
you doing in Turkey? What business brings you to Istanbul? No one
believes that you mourn for those killed in Khojali; it is not in
their memory that you fight. You come to Turkey to support anti-
Armenians and menace the Armenians of Turkey, who have no connection
to Khojali.

A word to hatemongers in Turkey, who join forces with Azerbaijani
anti-Armenians: Save us your lies. It is not Khojali that concerns
you. It never was Khojali that concerned you. Your true intent is to
intimidate the Armenians of Turkey'and all non-Turkish, non-Muslim
peoples'and exacerbate their insecure existence.

The very existence of human rights defenders is warranted by the cause
of resisting and fighting against atrocities and persecution in Turkey
and in the world. However, it falls yet again on human rights
defenders to fight against those who exploit atrocities and victims'
pain for their own purposes of carrying racist violence across
borders.

We, human rights defenders, invite all to unite as one body against
racism, racist violence, discrimination and hate, in order to show
that you are alone in your schemes, to isolate you in society, and to
expose you before public conscience.

We remind the officials, once again, that they will be held
accountable for the public display of ethnic hate, the bloodiest
instances of which are only too fresh in our memory.

Committee Against Racism and Discrimination

New misinformation from Azerbaijan: Arizona Senate didn’t recognise events in Aghdam in 1992 as ‘genocide’

Azerbaijani media are once again spreading disinformation about Legislative assembly in Arizona Senate (US) passing a resolution which “recognizes the events in Khojaly as genocide” thus attempting to create an illusion of “victory of Azerbaijani diplomacy”.

Yet, watching the video  from the senate hearing, it becomes evident that Senator Don Shooter’s statement, read in a half-empty hall, called on “to honour the memory of the victims of the tragic events.” As it was expected, the text read lacked the word ‘genocide’.

Moreover, it’s noteworthy that it was only a proclamation, yet the Azerbaijani propaganda is trying to present it as a Senate resolution.
On February 26, 1992, during the war in Karabakh, around 200 to 300 people (according to Human Rights Watch, and 600 according to the version propagated by Azerbaijan) were killed in unknown circumstances near the city of Aghdam. They have been deliberately withheld by the Azerbaijani authorities in the midst of the military actions. Population of the village of Khojalu, which was one of the firing points shooting at the blockaded Stepanakert (among five others) was kept in the village for months by force and was not evacuated by the authorities of Azerbaijan deliberately, in order to use them as human shields later.

Residents of Khojalu coming out through the humanitarian corridor, that the self-defense forces of NKR had left open, freely passed more than 10 km and reached the Aghdam city controlled by the Azerbaijani troops. Later, not far from the positions of Azerbaijani troops dead bodies of the villagers were found. The exact death toll remains unknown as the official Baku publishes data contradicting each other. Parliamentary Commission investigating the tragic death of the civilians at Aghdam city was dissolved by the order of Heydar Aliyev, the investigative materials are kept secret.

ARMENIA SLAMS ISRAELI FM OVER PRESENCE AT KHOJALY EVENT

KARABAKH | 27.02.15 | 10:10

Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman

Official Yerevan finds it inappropriate that Israeli Foreign Minister
Avigdor Lieberman has attended an event organized by Azerbaijan as
part of its campaign on the so-called "Khojaly genocide".

Enlarge Photo Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesman Tigran Balayan

Lieberman, a Soviet-born Israeli politician who also serves as Israel's
deputy prime minister today, was on a delegation that also included
a Knesset member that reportedly attended on February 26 an event
marking the 23rd anniversary of what Azerbaijan presents as a massacre
of civilians by Armenian forces in the town of Khajaly in Karabakh.

The Armenian side blames civilian deaths among Azeris during the
Khojaly operation on the Azerbaijani military, saying that they did
not allow the civilian population to be evacuated despite the presence
of a humanitarian corridor.

Asked by the Armenpress news agency about how Yerevan assesses
the presence of the top Israeli diplomat, as part of the electoral
campaign, at the kind of event organized by the Azerbaijani propaganda,
Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesman Tigran Balayan said: "It is
inappropriate that any politician could allow himself to be dragged
in the Azerbaijani cheap manipulations."

Azerbaijani propaganda events dedicated to 23rd anniversary of Aghdam events fail in Sweden

Intending to mark the 23rd anniversary of the events in Aghdam in 1992, Azerbaijan tried to hold propaganda events in Stockholm, Sweden; yet the events propagating the Azerbaijani version of the issue failed because of the absence of interest from both the local people and the Azerbaijani community members.
The visitors ignored the candlelight vigil in the memory of the victims, as well as the seminar at the ABF centre on 26 February. Judging by the photos taken by witnesses, no one joined the 5 organizers of the ceremony.
Some 20 people took part in the demonstration organized with the Turkish community in front of the Swedish Parliament building. The demonstration took place over the weekend and the speeches and slogans were made only in Azerbaijani. Meanwhile, several young representatives of the Swedish-Armenian community organized counteractions throughout the area of the planned demonstrations, distributing booklets and discs containing reliable information concerning the events in Aghdam, Baku and Sumgait massacres, as well as the current terrifying situation of the human rights violations in Azerbaijan.
On February 26, 1992, during the war in Karabakh, around 200 to 300 people (according to Human Rights Watch, and 600 according to the version propagated by Azerbaijan) were killed in unknown circumstances near the city of Aghdam. Aghdam events ‘eyewitness’ Azerbaijani photographer confuses evidence and can’t show any photo of ‘atrocities’

On the 23rd anniversary of the events in Aghdam, site Panarmenian.net turned to the memories and ‘evidence’ of the “National Geographic” photographer of Azerbaijani origin - Reza Deghati who is notorious for a series of contradicting statements made regarding the above-mentioned events. The site states that the photograph demonstrates bias claiming that in January 1990 he arrived in Baku where ‘Armenians were killing Azerbaijanis.’ This is how he described a week-long massacre of Armenians in Baku.

Besides, the photograph claims that “then Azerbaijani ambassador of UNESCO to Paris Elnura Huseynova” met him in Baku. What happens is that Azerbaijan was a member of the USSR (note that he got his visa in Moscow) in 1990 and did not have a representative in UNESCO. Azerbaijan set on an autonomous cooperation with that organization on 3 June, 1992, that is 2 years after the mentioned arrival in Baku. Moreover, the name of the Azerbaijani ambassador to UNESCO was not Elnura, but Eleonora.

Further, he tells about his arrival in Azerbaijan on 28-29 February, 1992 on the occasion of the events in Aghdam. Citation, “So… With that team I arrived in Aghdam, where people, who had managed to save themselves from the atrocities of the Armenians in Khojalu, gathered. At that time the Red Cross Community negotiated with the Armenians to return the dead bodies. I took some photos when we exchanged captives on Aghdam – Khojalu border. At that time one of the Armenian soldiers showed me a teaspoon taking it out of his pocket. I asked why he needed that. The soldier declared that they used it to gouge out the captives’ eyes.”

It is very important to note that he is not only a journalist, but he is a photographer, that is, a person who carries with him all the necessary equipment to capture the historical events on the spot. And here again inconsistencies come out in his story. First, the Armenian side itself transferred the corpses of the ‘people from Khojalu’ to Azerbaijan without preconditions 2 days later. And this is not the Red Cross Community’s merit; the reason was commonplace and simple: it was impossible to keep them in a country undergoing famine because of blockade.

Second, the sources and archives titled “Azerbaijan” from Deghati’s exhibitions, including his website and other propaganda resources, have been studied. Everywhere a few photos taken in Aghdam are featured as ‘khojalu’ photo-evidence that depict living, healthy people, without any trace of atrocities and tortures. Several sobbing women, an old woman at the mosque in Aghdam, mourning over a man’s body in the mosque, and that is all. It is quite strange that a professional photographer, witnessing ‘atrocities and horrors,’ did not take any photo of the victims of ‘khojalu’ and of ‘the executioner with a silver spoon.’

Further, Deghati organized an exhibition “Parole de liberté,” demonstrating the ‘horrors of khojalu’ at Paris metro station Luxemburg in 2010. However, there was only one photo related to the events in Aghdam on the stand. The rest depicted Afghanistan, Africa, Sarajevo. Yet the inscription emblazoned in the centre reads, “Azerbaijan. Aghdam. April, 1992” while he claimed that he had been in Aghdam and Khojalu in February, rather than in April.

And at last, in 2015 the title “Photos from the Khojalu genocide” appeared in the Azerbaijani press. 15 of the published 21 photos demonstrated scenes depicting living crying people what is natural for wartime, including men in transport - apparently refugees from Khojalu. 3 photos of graves, it is unknown who are those people, but judging by the headstone it is a man at whose age one is supposed to fight – a far cry from being a civilian and a ‘genocide victim.’ And 3 more photos depicting corpses. Those corpses belong to adult and mature men who can never be ranked as civilians. Remarkably, one of them is in a striped vest which is given to the military people.

Be as it may, it is strange that a photographer should claim having ‘seen’ something without showing a single photo of that. He does not remember people he met, their names, and confuses the events of 1990 and 1992.

Azerbaijani propaganda product over Aghdam events thrown into trash in Denmark

Azerbaijani propaganda once again made an unsuccessful attempt to hold another event on the 23rd anniversary of the events in Aghdam, this time in Denmark, witnesses having shot a video of it told Panorama.am.
In a factually empty square and with evident indifference of the passers-by the representatives of Azerbaijani and Turkish diaspora chanted slogans and demonstratedphotos of those killed during the events in the Balkans, presenting them as the “victims of Khojalu.”
Remarkably, the propaganda product that the organizers used during the event was thrown into the trash bins near the square and trampled under people’s feet after the event.
On February 26, 1992, during the war in Karabakh, around 200 to 300 people (according to Human Rights Watch, and 600 according to the version propagated by Azerbaijan) were killed in unknown circumstances near the city of Aghdam.
