CD REVIEW: IAN GILLAN TONY IOMMI - WHOCARES

In 2011, Deep Purple's Ian Gillan reunited with his old Black
Sabbath band mate, Tony Iommi, to record a charity single to
benefit a music school in Armenia that was destroyed in the 1988
earthquake that devastated the region. The pair recruited a number
of A-list musicians for the lead track, "Out Of My Mind," including
Iron Maiden's Nicko McBrain on drums, Jason Newsted on bass and
the late Jon Lord on keyboards. That track, along with its B-side,
"Holy Water," is included in the two-CD compilation album, WhoCares,
the profits of which will further aid the charity.

The album features the WhoCares single, along with rare or
underappreciated tracks from both Gillan and Iommi's illustrious
careers. "Out Of My Mind" leads off disc one and shows that nearly 30
years later, the pair's chemistry on record is unmistakable. The song
has a swampy intro, before pummeling the listener with its heavy riff.

It's a fine track and one that makes the listener wish they'd record
another album together.

Up next is "Zero The Hero," from the sole album Gillan recorded with
Black Sabbath, Born Again. The song begins abruptly, as it is missing
its intro from the album, "The Dark," but it is as menacing a riff as
Iommi has ever written. Original Sabbath drummer, Bill Ward, adds a
plodding drum beat serving to make the track even heavier. The song
may be the pinnacle of this short-lived partnership.

"Trashed," another track originally from Born Again, but rerecorded
by Gillan with Iommi and Deep Purple's Ian Paice and Roger Glover
for 2007's Gillan's Inn, follows. An up-tempo rocker, the new version
differs little from the 1983 original, save for better production on
the 2007 version. "Slip Away" is one of two previously unreleased
Iommi tracks featuring Glenn Hughes on bass and vocals. Originally
intended for their Fused project, the song features a massive riff and
Hughes' soulful vocals. "Don't Hold Me Back," from Gillan's Toolbox
album is a fine pop song with a great vocal from Gillan, who really
pushes his upper register on the chorus.

Disc one closes with a meeting of rock gods. Ronnie James Dio joins
Deep Purple on stage, along with the London Symphony Orchestra,
for a rousing rendition of "Smoke On The Water." The two legendary
singers sound great together, breathing new life into a song we've
all heard 1,000 times before.

Disc two leads off with "Holy Water," the other new song from the
WhoCares project. A ballad, the song showcases a fine, if restrained,
vocal from Gillan and a tasteful solo from Iommi. "Anno Mundi,"
from Sabbath's album Tyr, features Tony Martin on lead vocals. While
the intro recalls "Children Of The Sea," the song veers off into a
different, equally powerful territory, with a fine riff and vocal
performance from Martin.

"Hole In My Vest" is a track rare enough that the original tapes
no longer exist. The B-side to "Nothing But The Best," the version
presented here came from a needle drop of the original 12-inch vinyl.

It is great slice of 80s pop music, with all the production that comes
with that. Gillan showcases his love for the great Little Richard on
"Can't Believe You Wanna Leave Me," featuring Dr. John on piano. Both
men turn in astounding performances worthy of its composer on this
rollicking track.

Good music for a good cause - that's the basis of what Gillan and
Iommi were trying to achieve with the WhoCares single. Expanding the
concept to a two-CD set with rare tracks makes Ian Gillan Tony Iommi
WhoCares a no-brainer for fans of either artist.

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Deep Purple lead singer Ian Gillan and Black
Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi welcomed the news on the start of Gyumri
N6 music school construction.

Ian Gillan noted in his message sent to Mediamax that he is "personally
honored and humbled to be a small part of this project".

"I know how much hard work you and many others have put into making
it happen. And here we are - the work has begun, the foundations are
being laid for the re-birth of music after a generation has passed
in silence since the devastation of the earthquake in 1988. Already
I can hear the tinkling of piano keys, the scraping of violin bows,
strumming of guitars, beating of drums, aching of hearts and tears
of frustration as students attempt to master their craft in order to
eventually be able to express their art when music becomes a friend
for life. Have a wonderful happy day and just try to imagine what
fruit this tree will bear in the future", noted Ian Gillan.

In his message, Tony Iommi called the news on starting the construction
of the school "wonderful".

"What wonderful news that the school is finally being built. My trip
over has left an indelible memory, the warmth of your welcome and
hospitality will not be forgotten. I hope the new school will inspire
a great number of children to learn to play a musical instrument, not
just the most gifted but those for whom music can be a therapy. I'm
very busy recording a new Black Sabbath record so can't be with you,
but I hope to pay a visit when the school is finished", said Tony
Iommi.

Armenia's NAREGATSI ORCHESTRA Performs Cover Of BLACK SABBATH's 'She's Gone' (Video)

A video of Armenia's Naregatsi Orchestra performing a cover of the BLACK SABBATH song "She's Gone", which originally appeared on the "Technical Ecstasy" album, can be seen below. The performance took place on a visit to the country by BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi and DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan to mark the 30th anniversary of the Rock Aid Armenia charity project.

 

The visit and celebration of the anniversary were organized by the Mediamax Media Company and DoSomething (Australia), whose co-founder Jon Dee organized the 1989 Rock Aid Armenia project to help the victims of the Armenian earthquake.

 

Earlier today (Wednesday, June 5), Yerevan hosted a gala night under the auspices of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The event featured Gillan, Iommi and Jon Dee and also included a public showing of the documentary about Rock Aid Armenia's all-star 1989 remake of DEEP PURPLE's "Smoke On The Water".

 

On December 7, 1988, one of the most devastating earthquakes of the 20th century struck northwest Armenia. It killed over 25,000 and destroyed a region that was home to more than 700,000 people. A year after the earthquake, an all-star star version of "Smoke On The Water", featuring Gillan, Iommi and Brian May, was recorded for Rock Aid Armenia, with all funds raised donated to the Armenian earthquake relief effort.

 

Twenty years after the earthquake, Gillan and Iommi visited Armenia again and were deeply affected by how much work still needed to be done, especially at a music school in Gyumri that was bursting with talent but had never been properly restored since the earthquake shattered the city. Iommi and Gillan formed the WHO CARES project and wrote and recorded a new song "Out Of My Mind" to raise funds to build a new music school for the kids of Armenia. They assembled an all-star lineup at the iconic SARM studios in 2010. Participating artists included IRON MAIDEN's Nicko McBrain on drums, legendary DEEP PURPLE keyboardist Jon Lord and ex-METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted (who recorded remotely). This was one of the legendary Lord's last-ever days in the studio.

 

Thirty years after the earthquake, a film from the recording session was released by Australia's "The Void With Christina" (see below). Proceeds from this song, Gillan's charity concerts in Yerevan with the Armenian Symphonic Orchestra and generous donations from charities including the Fund for Armenian Relief and Mardigian Family Foundation made it possible to re-open the revitalised music school in 2013. Five years later, the revitalized Octet Music School is continuing to provide world-class musical education to the aspiring young musicians of Armenia.
