Can someone tell me what "ayah" means--is it grandmother or just an affectionate term?

You meant to say "Yayah"? Some use it to mean grandmother or an elderly lady.

Well, I know to Greeks it is YiaYia but my father and aunts pronounced it without a "y" sound at the beginning like eye-ahh but I know it was with the utmost of affection so this is most likely the word you are using.
