Yesterday, a clash broke between Armenians and Georgians at the Armenian village Parvana in Ninotsminda area in Javakhk. The Armenian villagers found a group of Georgians newcomers mowing hay at the village. As the latters explained, the soil (150 hectares in total) was bought at some internet-auction by one of the deputy ministers in Georgia. A fight launched between visitant Georgians and Armenian peasants, and the Georgians left the village... Now situation is tense in Parvanae. The land is the only source of sustenance for the village, and the peasants are not going to give it to somebody.

Armenia should just send the army to the village to drive these cowards back to their country. It's very simple.

I do not see the point in your little mission this morning. Are you attempting to educate us? Do you have any factual and pertinent information?

My point exactly.

What about the distinct Ossetian, an Iranian language? What of Abkhazian customs? How Georgian are the Laz?

Keep in mind, I am asking these questions honestly, as you may answer them better than me.

Is there a uniformity of culture, or are they all 'Georgian' only in the name of nationalism?

Thanks

Ethnic Armenians clash with police in south of Georgia by DFWatch staff | Oct 2, 2017

gumburo111.jpg?zoom=1.5625&resize=600%2C

TBILISI, DFWatch–Ethnic Armenians clashed with police in a village in the south of Georgia on Saturday after locals attempted to place a religious stone in the yard of Kumurdo temple.

The tense situation in the village Kumurdo calmed down on Sunday but the brief street clashes evoked gruesome memories of ethnic violence of the early 90s.

Locals intended to place a Khachkar, an Armenian cross-shaped stone, on the mass grave of unidentified human bones found during restoration work on the temple, which has been undergoing since 2016.

Armenians claim the personnel who carried out the restoration didn’t pay proper respect for the human remains, which, they believe, belong to their ancestors.

But their attempts were rebuffed by authorities, who claim that Kumurdo temple is on the list of cultural heritage, hence any changes made to the temple itself or the yard requires formal authorization, which has not been given.

Riot police was called in to disperse a crowd on Saturday, but the locals responded by hurling stones at the police and their vehicles. Several people from both sides sustained light injuries. Two locals were detained but later released after Minister of Internal Affairs Giorgi Mgebrishvili arrived negotiate with representatives of the locals.

The tension has now been relieved, as authorities agreed to recall riot police and hand the duty of guarding the site to the police units from nearby Akhaklalaki, a town also with predominantly Armenian population.

Locals on their part agreed to temporarily disband pending negotiations about what to do with the khachkar stone, negotiations that will also involve the Georgian Orthodox Church and the Diocese of Armenian Apostolic Church in Georgia.

Kumurdo is a village in Akhalkalaki municipality with almost 2,000 inhabitants, almost exclusively ethnic Armenians.

The Armenian 10th century church, located in Gumburdo settlement of Georgia’s Samtskhe-Javakheti region, is controlled by law enforcers, after the clashes between local Armenian population and Georgian police officers,  co-chairman of unregistered Virk Party, Davit Rstakyan, told Armenian News – NEWS.am.

It was reported earlier that the Georgian police officers were firing into the air and were beating local Armenians with truncheons during the scuffle in Javakheti region. The scuffle between the locals and police officers broke out on Saturday morning after the residents tried to install a kahchkar in the yard of a church.

Rstakyan noted that the situation in the village is quiet now.

According to him, nobody is allowed to enter the reconstructed Gumburdo church, and there are serious suspicions that some changes are being made inside, in order to say later that the church has Georgian origin.

Shirak Torosyan about incident in Javakhk: Azerbaijani-Turkish tandem
tries to spoil Armenia's relations with friendly states

Yerevan October 2

Ani Mshetsyan. At the moment, the situation in the village of
Gamburdo, in Javakhk has stabilized - the parties came to a consensus.
This was stated in the conversation with the correspondent of ArmInfo
by the deputy of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, chairman of
the Javakhk compatriot Shirak Torosyan, commenting on the clashes
between the Armenian population of the village and local police when
the Armenian community tried to establish a cross-stone in the church
yard, however.

"The parties came to a consensus and decided to leave this issue in
the competence of the churches of the two countries," Torosyan said.
"Speaking about the reasons why the problem arose when establishing
Khachkar, after all the Armenian community established them throughout
Javakhk, Torosyan pointed out several reasons. "This may be a
provocation, ahead of the upcoming elections in October to the bodies
of local self-government (Sakrebulo). Besides, of course, the
Armenian-Georgian relations reached a completely new friendly level,
mutual visits and meetings increased. What is natural, does not like
the Azerbaijani-Turkish tandem at all, and representatives of these
communities are constantly trying to kindle enmity between us,
speculating on the issue of Javakhk's self-determination, which is
supposedly sought by local Armenians, "Torosyan said.

Torosyan also noted that such incidents could destabilize the
situation in the region and Armenia should be careful not to allow the
Azerbaijani-Turkish tandem, through provocations, to spoil Armenia's
relations with friendly countries.

Note that on September 30, the Armenians of Gamburdo village, wanted
to establish a khachkar in the courtyard of the local church, but met
resistance from the police. Special forces drove up to the scene of
the incident, and after a while, stones were sent to the village by
the villagers. As a result, there were victims from both sides. The
situation was exhausted only after the head of the Georgian Interior
Ministry, Georgy Mgebrishvili, arrived in the place. Since Tbilisi
intends to transfer the church under the protection of UNESCO,
according to the laws of the organization the establishment of the
cross-stone is a violation. This caused a confrontation between the
police and the population of the village. Employees of the Ministry of
Internal Affairs of Georgia instituted criminal proceedings under
three articles in particular: "Attack on a police officer or other
authority or public institution"; "Damage or destruction of a thing"
and "Hooliganism in aggravating circumstances, committed with the use
of firearms or other items used as weapons."

The day before, in connection with the incident with his Georgian
counterparts, the vice-speaker of the Armenian parliament, head of the
Armenian-Georgian friendship group, Edard Sharmazanov, spoke on the
phone. He expressed the hope that, based on friendly relations between
the two countries, the incident will be quickly resolved.
