HERE COMES THE NEW PETROSIAN

by Andy Soltis Chess Grandmaster

DO you believe in reincarnation? Play over this week's game before
answering.

Yes, Black's name is really Tigran Petrosian, the same as the ninth
world champion, and yes he is an Armenian grandmaster.

But this Petrosian was born just one month after his great
predecessor died of cancer in August 1984.

Both Tigrans showed remarkable talent before they were 16 - although
there's a noticeable difference in their playing styles, as this
week's game shows.

The "Iron Tigran" who became the world's most cautious elite player
in the 1950s and '60s would never have sacrificed a piece on the
fourth move, as Black did here. Nor would he have disdained a draw by
repetition at move 12 and chosen to launch a speculative attack with
his king sitting precariously at f6.

Tigran I might have grabbed material as Tigran II did, missing the
superior 20 . . . Ke7!. But he might have improved on the second
Tigran by finding the spectacular mate six moves later - 20 . . .
Bxg3+ 21 Kxg3 Qd3+ 22 Kh4 Qd8+! etc.

We'll be sure to hear more about Tigran II, who eventually tied for
second in the World Junior, at the same age that Tigran I was making
his debut in the world's strongest event, the Soviet Championship.

Now do you believe in reincarnation?

The Independent - United Kingdom

Jon Speelman

THE GIBTELECOM Masters finished last Thursday in victory for a quintet of
players on 7.5/10: Alexei Shirov (Spain), Emil Sutovsky (Israel), Lev Aronian
(Armenia), Kiril Georgiev (Bulgaria) and Zahar Efimenko (Ukraine).

In an event unusual for its high scores, there was a further five-way tie on
7 between Alexander Areshchencko (Ukraine), Vasilios Kotronias (Greece),
Hikaru Nakamura (USA), Gabriel Sargissian (Armenia) and England's Danny Gormally.

As mentioned on Thursday, there was a live web broadcast every day by Stuart
Conquest. This was a great success, attracting more than 12 million hits over
the 10 days - more than twice the population of Gibraltar. The festival is
only in its third year, but attracted more than 160 players, 120 of them in the
Masters, and it is already becoming established as a seriously strong Open and
a great success.

While he wasn't one of the joint winners, the greatest success of this year's
tournament was Gormally who, after years of near misses, has finally made his
last grandmaster norm to become England's newest grandmaster.

Yesterday was an unusual day. Both my sons Mateos 6 and Arvan9 took first place in New England singles in their categories. We moved Arvan to 14 ages under instead of 10 under for better competition. They both did really well and got identical trophies (nothing to fight about it now)
Here is one game from Arvan. There is a great rook sacrifice for mating.

Congrats Rubo! I particularly love the last photo. The tall guy on the left looks so obviously displeased. It's almost like he's thinking "I can't believe I have to share my trophy with this midget." And the other one is like, "He's gonna kick my ass when we exit the building, but surely I can beat him in Dungeons and Dragons. I rule." The guy on the left, next to the beanstalk giant, is too into his trophy, he's probably thinking "Gosh this baby looks nice, just wait until Jennifer sees it, I can finally get to second base." And the third boy for the left is just too darn adorable, there is nothing I can say about him. tongue.gif

So yeah, Congrats again!

HAHAHAHA... Ed, I gave one of the mustards to a friend who over the weekend put half a teaspoon of the mustard in his mouth and his exact words were "I have not cried that much since I was a baby". Said everything tasted like mustard the rest of the day. smile.gif

16.12.2005
Levon Aronian: I still enjoy chess

The fact that Armenian GM, who lives in Berlin, entered in the final cannot be called sensational. Aronian is playing great, and this, of course, influenced on his Elo rating. Besides, he belongs to the generation of 22-23 years old geniuses that should win something serious, as many people think.

- Was it difficult to win Etienne Bacrot?

LA: It was simpler than I expected. The first game ended quickly: in the known theoretical position I used a novelty and my opponent preferred a forced draw. Next day I managed to get playing position with advantage. Then Etienne was playing unconfidently. And it is not surprising: it is unpleasant to defend without a pawn and counterplay and at such time control. So, he lost everything.

- But in the final position there could be a draw, isn’t it?

LA: Maybe... I can only say that I did a lot in order to make Bacrot to blunder.

- What can you say about your opponent in the final?

LA: Ruslan is a great chess player with huge experience of participating in strong tournaments, including knockout ones. He is very strong in positional fight and in technical positions. Besides, he is of my age. If I’m not mistaken, I have positive balance against him, but it doesn’t mean anything. I can say that it was not by chance that he was a World Champion.

- Do you feel tired before perhaps the main final in your life?

LA: Not at all, because I constantly feel support of the local Diaspora. Not long ago, for example, they took me for a walk in the forest. I even had an opportunity to shoot in the shooting-range. It is nice that people come to support just you every day. It encourages.

- At this tournament you had two difficult matches – against Vallejo and Sadvakasov.

LA: Yes, I agree. Honestly speaking, I’m not satisfied with my performance at this tournament. We should tell this straight, I played rather bad. In general, I can say that Ponomariov and Grischuk have more stable style than I. I still have some vacancy in chess knowledge that should be filled…

- It is scaring to imagine how strong you will play after learning more chess.

LA: Basically, when you know a lot, it is more difficult to work well. Nobody knows what is good and what is bad. Maybe, having gained more knowledge I will play worse than at the moment.

- Maybe, you are stronger psychologically? Everyone notes that you are so energetic.

LA: Atmosphere of chess always inspires me. It is a great pleasure for me to be in the playing hall, to talk to my colleagues, most of them are nice people… Maybe that’s the reason why I am not nervous during games.

- At one of the press conferences you called yourself “a cheap tactician”. Since that this phrase is a saying…

LA: Yeah. Boris Gelfand said: what is that, you cannot win any round without playing tie-breaks!

- How do you plan to spend prize money?

LA: Actually, I don’t know yet. Anyway, I have a big family.

- Do you have any global aim? For example, to become number 1?

LA: Basically, I have never thought about that. I just play chess and enjoy my life…

- It came out that the chief arbiter of this tournament is your countrymen…Does this helps you some way?

LA: Yes, of course, you know, he suggests me regularly (Levon smiles). Generally, it is nice that my countryman occupies this important position. Maybe, this fact is one of the components of my successful performance (he smiles again).
