Tork the Handsome
Is this what he looked like?

http://www.google.co...G=Google Search

Which one?
Take a pick.
I don’t think so, he was much more handsome.

It is a lengthy epic poem, One of the most tender love stories of all times, reminiscent of the movie Shrek, which could have very well been based on the Tork Saga.

We read in the overture of the poem;

The following paragraph is from here;
http://www.matenadar...age/literature/

OLD ARMENIAN LITERATURE
Poghos Khachatryan, Doctor of Philology

Philology/

Is that why many of us run as far as we can from that chiildish/kindergarten depiction of our heritage?
With "philologists" that don't know where their A**es and V*r*ks are?
In the Armenian language anggh/անգղ also mean vulture, that dirty bird of prey;

http://www.birdinfo....keyVulture.html

Which came first, the vulture/chicken or the egg?
Was the bird named for the region or visa versa?

The myths tell about the hero Hayk, the forefather Aram, Tork Angegh (Ugly Tork), Ara Geghetsik (Handsome Ara) and Shamiram, Vahagn Vishapakagh (Vahagn the Dragonkiller). Handsome and broad-shouldered Hayk, with his happy-looking eyes and strong arms is a giant using bow and arrow by description very similar to the Greek Orion, who was the son

The above author is one of the directors of Matenadaran.
Where did he earn his title of a philologist? At the “ugly” University of Istanbul?
Does he not know that in the Armenian language we do NOT use “angegh”, except, as indicated before, in a poetic license , if needed for a rhyme, to mean “ugly”, we use “tgegh”.
Imagine an official site disseminating such cheap scholarship!
Some time ago I wrote to the author to please amend his article. I got no response.
Is the site still alive and active?
Cheap scholarship?
Cheap play on words?
As young boys we would call our friends who may have been a little bigger than us, who may have had exaggerated features- “Tork Angegh”, in loving friendship, mind you. A “cheap play on words”? A barakhagh/բարախաղ/ pun?
What place does pun have in scholarship?
It belongs in the humor department.
Of course!
Everything predating 301 AD is ugly, including Aramazt, Anahit, Vahagn and Astghik.
Why are we so ashamed of our heritage that we need to denigrate and ridicule it?
Tork was a god, perhaps a real person on whose legacy the House of Torgom was established. Anggh/Angegh was a town where the cult of Tork was observed and temples were maintained. Tork is not “angegh/tgegh/ugly, he is Tork Ageghia, meaning Tork of/from Aaggh/Angegh..The region is well defined and at the present there are/were towns and villages of the same name, both in historical and modern Armenia.
During the Arab occupation the region was known as “Angili”.
And now, another play on words.
Let us substitute the Armenian “gh” with that of the Latin L and see what we get.
Angegh……angel?
Don’t you wish we had more “angels” of the kind?

Of course know that Ang-gh/Անգղ also means vulture. Look what I found. Is it a coincidence?

Wher did you get that idea?
Is that why that California metropolis is not called Los Anjeles? If it were then we would have to pronounce it as Los AnHeles.
Or Agathangelos is spelled as "agathanJelos?

angels were "transferred" to the Judeo-Christian religions from Zoroastrianism. I doubt if Armenians had to borrow a Greek/Latin word angel to describe Tork when there is "hreshtak".

Have it your way!
Wallow in that self deprecating half baked interpretation of “angegh” to mean UGLY.
Half baked interpretation by those half baked, uneducated , pro Yehovah, anti Tork clergy of ours whose primary language is Hebrew, and at times Turkish, not Armenian.
For the umpteenth time. In proper Armenian we DO NOT use “angegh” to mean ugly, the word is “t-gegh”.
Angegh means “from the town of Anggh”.
Of course, if we were such hellenophiles we would not use that Pahlavi word “fresheteh/hreshtak” to mean angel, when Agathangelos would rather be “fereshtelos” just as we would not use that blasted Persian word “vardapat/vardapet” either but instead we would use such as, keshish, we would not use words like clergy/կղերական and catholicos/կաթողիկոս, bishop/episkopos, archbishop/areqepiskopos, and we would not use ekeghetsi/ecclesia to mean church, and instead we would use mzkit/mosque//jameee.
Why are we so self deprecating as to look for everything “ugly” in our native culture.
Can we once again say; ANGEGH DOES NOT MEAN UGLY, IT MEANS “FROM THE TOWN OD ANGGH“!!
Yes! Angel as in angelos.

Sorry, I meant English and not Latin. It could even have been andjel for all English cares. At any rate, angegh to angel would be akin to Անգլիա to En[dj]land.

It is well known that the common practice appellation of the dragon in Armenian is Vishap, however, linguistic evidence has has secured the word as a Pahlavi phrase and thus a latter loanword -despite antiquity- in Armenian. But, isn't is so that our Highlands have an immemorial portrayal of the seprent/leviathan in the form of the astounding Vishap-kars (literally dragon stones, which happen to be the direct ancestor of our aesthetic pride and joy, the khatchkar; cross-stone) and our myth and folklore? Then there has to be a purely native name for the mythical beast right? Well, there is.

Gegh.

To sum up, alongside numerous other data in support, there has been an abundance of vishap related archeological artifacts sorrounding all historical toponyms near Lake Sevan and the Eastern provinces of the Great Armenia that begin with the root word Gegh -as in Gegham, Gegharkuni, etc-, with their christenings dating back to the conception of the Araratian empire, thus leading scholars to conclude the intended meaning of the word "Gegh" as the pre-vishap "dragon"

With that said, take a look at the following.

"...Veratarnalov Vshapi het Ampropi astdzu menamardi Hndevropakan araspeli agunknerin, nshenk, vor patmabanner Nichoghayos Adonts@ yev Grigor Ghapantsyan@ Tork Angeghi anun@ kapum en Khetakan Ampropi astvats Tarkui anvan het. Angegh bari imastayin tarberaknerits mek@ karogh e kapvats lini "AN" tzh@khtazanits yev "GEGH"- vishap armatits. Urem@n, Tork Angegh nshanakum e Tork CH-VISHAP, ayl khoskov na, ov vishap che, aysink@n Vishapi hakarakort@."

"...Returning to the subject of the Indo-European dragon battling diety Ampropi, we should mention that the historians Nikoghayos Adonts and Grigor Ghapantsyan connect Tork Angegh's name with the name of the Hittite god Tarku, a manifestation of Ampropi. Now, Tork does not directly slay dragons in his legend, yet the second part of his name, "Angegh" allude to an encounter with the dragon (vishap). An interpretation of his name can be linked to the prefix "An" and the root word "Gegh", or vishap/dragon. Therfore, Tork Angegh can mean Tork the un-Dragon, in other words, he-who-is-not-dragon, meaning the dragon's opposer."

As mentioned before I had written to the above so called “philologst” with no reaction. The Matenadaran site has been very erratic.
I did meet my friend, an editor at the Matenadaran, a couple of months ago when I was in Yerevan. We spoke about many subjects, there was not enough time to address the above issue. Now that I have her new e-mail address I will revive the above debate. And se where that idiot got his dergee of "philology"
I wonder if the above so called director of philology at the Matenadaran, one Poghos Khachatryan is the one and the same who also read “Jenats/ChEnats” in re Mamikoneans as "ChInats??!!
DUHH!!
Can we have so called "philologists" who can read Armenian?
Can the above even read elementary/kinddergarten Armenian wher te word for "ugly" is "tgegh" not "angegh"? As I said, if that is his knowlede of Armenian language he or his mother must have been "tgegh" turko-russo Armenians..
Yeah, yeah Russian!! Or is it Ru-ASS-ian?

In The echoes of bygone treasures (which, really, is a beginner introduction to the inception of the Armenians and the parentage of our civilization), a chapter deals with the role of water and waterways in the life of the Highlanders and the further developement of irrigation techniques, storage and sailing, briefly speaking of the aquatic essence of our vishap. I just wish more of such literature would be translated into other languages, maybe even become available online.

Artist's study of Angegh Tork

<img src="http://www.armenian-...torq-angeg.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Editorial.
This article should also be posted under the topic of History, except, all that mythology should be edited and explained.
Please!!! As always, use discretion sorting fable and fiction from facts, mythology from historiography. Even though Khorenatsi is undeniably the Father of our History, one must also be careful to separate science from folklore. Khorenats’s contribution to Armenian historiography is invaluable, however one must learn to discern fact from fiction, fable from history, sort out the facts and enjoy the fiction. Khorenatsi was NOT a hands on histriographer, traveler geographer, he was a collecter of folklore, be they native or foreign. There is no evidence that he had traveled much far from his native village, which is evident when he confuses Ethiopia and India ( he says that there were human/monkey like cannibals there)
When will we ever learn that the Armenian word for "ugly" is "tgegh/ՏԳԵՂ, not ԱՆԳԵՂ.
See below where the author of this article does in fact say that the “ugly” label was a SHAMELESS PLAY ON WORDS, but does not go far enough to correct it. ANG@GH/ԱՆԳՂ, ANGEGH/ԱՆԳԵՂ was a District of Tauron/Տարօն/ՏաւրոնTaurus/Տաւրոս/ Տաւար/Toro.

The following is an article from projectdiscovery.com regarding the Vishapkar/Վիշապքար/dragon stones, the essential ancestor of our renowned khachkars/խաչքար.

VISHAP STONES

By

Armen Petrosyan, Ph.D.

The unique monuments of prehistoric Armenia, "višap" vishaps (Arm. višap ‘serpent, dragon’ an Iranian borrwing) or “dragon stones” are spread in many provinces of historical Armenia – Gegharkunik, Aragatsotn, Javakhk, Tayk, etc. They are cigar-shaped huge stones, 10-20 feet tall, usually situated in the mountains, near the sources of rivers and lakes. Many of them are in the shape of fish; they have a bull’s skin (complete with head and feet) carved into them; there is also a stream of water flowing from the mouth of the bull’s skin and some vishaps have images of water birds carved below the bull’s head. The earliest višap "višap" stelae would be dated, probably, from the 18th-16th centuries BC; an Urartian inscription in a višap from Garni testifies that they were created in pre-Urartian times (before the 8th century BC).

A number of theories try to interpret the meaning of these stones. One theory holds that these monuments represented mythological dragons guarding the sources of the waters (B. Piotrovski). Another two trace back, respectively, to Astghik, the goddess of fertility and love (M. Abeghian) and Ara Geghecik ‘Ara the Handsome,’ the “dying and rising god” of Armenian tradition (G. Ghapantsyan). The present author has his own interpretation of these stalae, which may be represented as follows.

The Indo-European “basic myth,” reconstructed by V.V. Ivanov and V.N. Toporov, tells the story of the battle of the thunder god and his adversary the serpent. The victory of the god results in origination of cosmic waters (rain, rivers). Certain aspects of the dragon stones reveal their links with the “basic myth.” In this context, it is evident that the huge fish would represent the water serpent (the dragon-serpents were sometimes conceived in the shape of fish; e.g. in Oppian’s Halieutika the dragon Typhon is represented as a fish), while the bull is the symbol of the thunder god in many ancient Near Eastern and Indo-European traditions (Hurrian, Hittite, Indian, Greek, and Armenian). The wavy lines below the bull’s head may be interpreted as rainy waters triggered by the battle between the god and the serpent.

The name of the serpent in the “basic myth” is derived from the Indo-European stem *wel-. According to the rules of the Armenian language, the Indo-European *wel- would have developed into geł- (New Eastern Armenian pronunciation: gegh-). In this context it is characteristic that the višap stones are concentrated mainly in the Gełam province, Gełakuni district, on the Gełamay Mountains to the east of Sevan Lake (modern Gegharkunik province of Armenia). The two largest groups of them are located, respectively, on Mt. Geł, at the source of the river Azat, and near the Gełi fortress. Characteristically, the mountain beside Geł, the highest of the Gełamay range, is called Azhdahak from the name of the dragon of ancient Iranian tradition "Aždahak" .

It may be reasonably inferred that the aforementioned place names from the stem geł- < *wel- "*wel-" would have been derived from the name of the Indo-European mythic serpent. Moreover, the dragon stones themselves probably would have been called *geł- < *wel- before the Iranian loanword višap "višap" replaced their original Indo-European name.[1]

According to Armenian tradition, the Gełam province was founded by Gełam, the first patriarch of the eastern provinces of Greater Armenia (Xorenac‘i I, 12). The Armenian place-names with the first element geł- are concentrated in the province of Gełam. Significantly, "Gełam" Gełakuni is attested as Uelikuni/ Uelikuhi (to read: Weliku-ni/hi) among the local pre-Urartian “kingdoms” occupied in the 8th century by the kings of Urartu, which shows that those interconnected toponyms are derived from the protoform *wel- "*wel-" .

On the other hand, the name of the district of the “dragon stones” Ueliku "Ueliku" -(ni/hi), in the context of mythological traditions of the ancient peoples of the Armenian Highland is comparable to that of the stone giant Ullikummi, the famous adversary of the thunder and storm god Teshub* "Ullikummi" . In the Hurrian myth, attested in the 2th millennium BC, Kumarbi "Kumarbi" , the father and adversary of Teshub, plots to overthrow him. Kumarbi impregnates a great rock in the “Cold Spring” and it bears Ullikummi. The gods battle the monster, but it has grown so big that they are unable to harm it. The end of the myth is not preserved but probably contained the final victory of the weather god.

Ni and hi in Ueliku "Ueliku" -ni/hi are alternative Urartian suffixes (common formants in place-names), while mmi is a Hurrian suffix. Thus, Weliku-(ni/hi) of the pre-Urartian population of the Lake Sevan region and the Hurrian Ullikummi "Ullikummi" may have been derived from the Indo-European name of the serpent (a derivative of *wel-).[2]

There is an interesting word Gełni, var. Gełnik, Głni ‘Armenian,’ that survived only in the Armenian medieval dictionary of Eremia Meghretsi. There are no other data on this interesting term, but it may be considered in the context of Armenian and Indo-European onomastics. Since in folk tradition the two other Armenian ethnonyms, Hay and Armen, were connected to the names of the patriarchs of the ethnogonic myth Hayk and Aram, it is fair to assume that Gełni would have been linked with the consonant names of that myth—Gełam "Gełam" and Ara Gełec‘ik. Numerous Indo-European tribal and place names comparable to *wel- "*wel-" have been considered in the context of the “basic myth” (cf. Celtic Volcae, Illirian Velsounas, Italic Volski, etc.).

This theory poses some intriguing questions. The bull’s skin is frequently carved on the “dragon stones” as if the skin were thrown on the mouth of the fish (on the top of the stela). This cannot be interpreted otherwise than as an imitation of the bull sacrifice ritual. That is, the bull, symbol of the thunder god, appears to have been sacrificed to the giant fish, symbol of the serpent. Why imitate the ritual instead of performing a real sacrifice?

The Hurrian and Urartian languages represent two branches of the Hurro-Urartaian language family, while Armenian is an Indo-European language. The name Ulikummi, as we have seen, may well be borrowed from Indo-European, yet scholars regard the Ullikummi myth as entirely Hurrian, not Indo-European. The question, then, is who were the creators of the “dragon stones”—the Hurro-Urartian or Indo-European tribes?

*Teshup/Tsop/Ցոփք, possible connection with Tork?
