ON JUNE 28 ARMENIA MAY DE JURE BECOME THE MEMBER OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE, DECLARED THE ARMENIAN PARLIAMENTARIAN

"On June 12 the session of the Political committee of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) was opened in Rome, bearing in some sense summarizing character, as it is being held on the threshold of the enlarged session of PACE which will be summoned on June 26-28 in Strasbourg", declared in the interview to MEDIAMAX the deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee of Armenia for foreign relations Armen Rustamian.
According to Mr. Rustamian, the meeting in Rome is of no small importance, first of all, in connection with the existing complications on the matter of simultaneous entry of Armenia and Azerbaijan into the Council of Europe.
"According to the information that we have, in the work of the Roman session the reporters of the committees for juridical questions and human rights of the two countries will also take part, and it is important that the political committee could make a concordant decision together with them", stressed the deputy of the Armenian parliament.
Armen Rustamian told MEDIAMAX that the final decision on Armenia's entry into the Council of Europe will be made on June 28 in Strasbourg: after the political report the report of the juridical committee and the committee for human rights will be heard, after which a discussion and voting will take place.
"It's not excluded such a situation that the reports of Armenia and Azerbaijan will differ sharply from each other. In this sense the Roman meeting has the objective to smooth the existing verges", stressed Armen Rustamian.
According to the deputy of the National Assembly of Armenia, in case of positive results of the voting on Armenia in Strasbourg, the country will de jure become the member of the Council of Europe, and just a step will remain on the path of full membership of Armenia in the Council of Europe - the decision of the Council of ministers of the Council of Europe. "In this sense the official registration of Armenia as a full member of the Council of Europe will take place when the state flag of Armenia is raised in Strasbourg , which at the favorable development of events will take place not later than in September 2000", noted Armen Rustamian. -0-
